“Lemon” Scented Cannabis Strains May Be More Relaxing

Current research shows that a lemon-smelling terpene known as d-Limonene may reduce THC-induced anxiety effects for some people. D-Limonene is one of the most common terpenes in nature. But you find the highest amounts of d-Limonene in citrus fruits, especially in rind oil from lemons, oranges, and limes.  D-Limonene is only found in a smaller subset of cannabis strains. For growers looking to maximize relaxation and reduce paranoia, we compiled a list of strains that test extra high in d-limonene, including one superstar strain.

A gorgeous colorful cannabis bud in front of two lemons. D-limonene makes a lemon scent.

Surprising Result: Interestingly, although d-Limonene is considered to smell like lemons, upon lab testing, a lot of the highest levels we found were in “Mandarin”, “Sour”, “Diesel”, “Cookies”, and “Gorilla Glue” cannabis strains. When we examined all our lab results from over the years, we were surprised to learn that many “Lemon” strains did not necessarily have the highest levels of this terpene compared to others, though of course there are exceptions. Keep reading for specific strain “Lemon” scented suggestions.

Strain names that tend to have higher amounts of d-Limonene often include these words (of course, not always):

  • Mandarin
  • Sour
  • Diesel
  • Cookies
  • Gorilla Glue

The Power of Lemon in Terpenes Like d-Limonene

Have you ever noticed that you may feel different effects from different strains of weed? When it comes to cannabis, it’s not just THC that affects the “high” or how you feel. Cannabis contains other compounds, including terpenes like d-Limonene, that alter the overall experience from smoking or vaporizing.

Did You Know? The “entourage effect” is how different compounds work together to change how you feel from different strains. Just like a celebrity with an entourage of bodyguards and assistants, THC has an entourage of chemical compounds in weed. The most studied are CBD and terpenes like d-Limonene.

d-Limonene ("lemon" smell contributes to the cannabis "Entourage Effect"

Why is cannabis-based d-Limonene special?

D-limonene is a terpene that affects the experience of weed. Terpenes are smelly compounds found in plants, which often give them their distinct odor. For example pine trees get their smell from pinene. And Linalool is responsible for the unique floral scent of lavender, also contributing to the smells of coriander and mint.

Cannabis buds contain an array of different terpenes that create a bouquet of smells for each strain. However, only some strains contain d-Limonene.

Each cannabis strain has different levels of terpenes and cannabinoids.

A bunch of sparkly cannabis buds in hand, each one is a different strain

How does d-Limonene reduce anxiety and enhance relaxation?

In this study, it was found that higher amounts of limonene while vaporizing weed reduced the likelihood of cannabis enthusiasts or patients experiencing the “paranoia” effect.

Anecdotally, citrus-scented strains are often noted for their relaxing effects. Here is one last anecdote from when we went through our data for this article. After we determined which strains contained the highest levels of d-Limonene, we noted that many of these strains had been described subjectively as being specifically relaxing and anti-anxiety.

Those two anecdotes plus a small study doesn’t prove anything, but if you’re looking for relaxing weed it seems worth giving d-Limonene strains a try to see if it works for you.

My 7 Favorite “Lemon” Scented Strains with High d-Limonene

In celebration of d-Limonene, I wanted to share 7 strains that contain relatively higher amounts of this terpene. These strains often tend to have hints of citrus smell in the buds, but sometimes you don’t actually smell the citrus smell, especially if it has strong other smells. For example, many “Cookies” strains (like Platinum Cookies), or “Sour” strains (like Sour Diesel) have significant amounts of d-Limonene, but the “lemon” smell doesn’t come through except perhaps as a note of citrus.

How did we make this list? Some of these strains were lab tested by others, but many were lab tested ourselves, as stated in each description.

Get cannabis strains that contain a lot of the terpene limonene for relaxing bud effects!

We lab-test our homegrown buds to help track what does and doesn’t work. We’ve experimented with growing techniques, grow light direct comparisons, soil vs coco, and more. Check out our side-by-side grow experiments to see some of the tests we’ve conducted. We’ve tested just under a hundred different homegrown buds. It was exciting to realize we could use that data to run a little “mini-study” on d-Limonene based on results in the field over several years. Let us know if you’d like to see any particular experiments with lab tests.

Here are our best picks for d-Limonene.

#1 Strain for d-Limonene: Mandarin Cookies by Ethos Genetics

This strain beat all others on the list. When we got our Mandarin Cookies buds tested at the lab, all the samples were at least around 1% d-Limonene. One sample was even 1.4% d-Limonene. That means 1.4% of all the dried mass of the buds was the terpene d-Limonene. On top of that it measured 26.9% THC under an HID grow light, and 28.3% THC when grown under an HLG LED grow light. That means almost 1/3 of the buds of this strain (by dry weight) were either THC or d-Limonene. That easily puts Mandarin Cookies at that top of the list!

Our Mandarin Cookies not only had great effects, but buds are super photogenic.

Our lab results:

At that time, there wasn’t any scientific studies on d-Limenine, but I can anecdotally attest that everyone found the Mandarin Cookies buds to be particularly relaxing and gave everyone good vibes. This seems to go along with the idea that this terpene may increase relaxing effects.

7 More Awesome Strains with Abundant Limonene

Surprising Result: Interestingly, although d-Limonene is considered to smell like lemons, upon lab testing, a lot of the highest levels were found in “Mandarin”, “Sour”, “Orange”, “Diesel”, “Cookies”, and “Gorilla Glue” strains. When we examined all our lab results from over the years, we were surprised to learn that many “Lemon” strains did not necessarily have the highest levels of this terpene compared to others, though of course there are exceptions.

Here are examples of other strains we’ve tested (or have been tested by other growers or breeders) and found to have above-average levels of d-Limonene.

1.) Zoap by MSNL (Rainbow Sherbet x Pink Guava)

I thought this was kind of a strange name for such a fruity strain, but as they say “a rose by any other name would smell as sweet”. In addition to high amounts of d-Limonene, Zoap buds have a sweet berry citrus smell that’s pleasant and fruity. Buds produce over 25% THC, so the potency is very high. Another reason home growers love this strain is it tends to produce big yields, yet is forgiving and beginner-friendly.

2.) Strawberry Sorbet by DNA Genetics

This strain has indica-leaning genetics and it naturally grows in a Christmas tree shape with just one main bud. But unusually for an indica strain, it grows a bit tall and stretchy, making these plants great candidates for plant training. You can make it grow bushy with many buds by topping it (cutting of the top) when the young plant has 5-6 full sets of leaves. Then gently spread out the branches (down and away from the center of the plant) as it grows so plants grow wide and flat. This results in excellent yields with lots of big main buds all over the plant.

Try to spread this plant out wide as it grows, or it will get tall.

3.) GG Lemon by Seed Supreme

We found in our tests that many Gorilla Glue (“GG”) strains have surprisingly high amounts of d-Limonene. This Gorilla Glue strain in particular has honed in on the lemon scent.

Strains with Gorilla Glue (“GG”) ancestry like GG Lemon often produce more d-Limonene.

4.) Candy Games #38 by Happy Valley Genetics

Candy Games #38 is a fruity strain by a relatively new breeder known as Happy Valley Genetics. I’ve been really impressed by this breeder so far and their Candy strains are prized for giving energetic effects without being overwhelming. This particular strain makes purple-tinted buds that are tight and sparkly. Check out their homepage for more information.

5.) Platinum Cookies by Seed Supreme

This is just an all around easy-to-grow strain with amazing bud results. The Platinum Cookies plants were by far the favorite strain from that grow, and coincidentally have higher amounts of d-Limonene.

The one thing about this strain is it does tend to get a bit tall, and has a slightly longer flowering stage than average (about 10-12 weeks), due to its Sativa-leaning genetics. That being said, the yields and bud quality are outstanding and I highly recommend it for any grower. Check out my full strain review of Platinum Cookies.

6.) Nitro Lemon Haze by MSNL

Another strain by MSNL that is relatively heavy in d-Limonene. This is a great option for those who don’t like a a “heavy” or debilitating stone. This is perfect if you instead seek a “Sativa” high that is more psychedelic and energetic.

Unlike other similar Haze strains, this strain has a normal flowering time that only needs about 10 weeks before buds are ready to harvest. That also means it can be a good choice for growing outdoors in a climate that has a shorter summer.

5 Special Mentions

Besides the Sour Diesel, these haven’t been specifically tested for d-Limonene by me, but are delicious strains with relaxing effects:

  1. San Fernando Lemon Kush by Sweet Seeds
  2. Super Lemon Haze by Seed Supreme
  3. Sour Diesel by Royal Queen Seeds (this one tested high in d-Limonene, though it didn’t smell much like lemons)
  4. Amnesia Fast by Seedsman (very quick to harvest compared to most strains)
  5. Northern Tropic by Elev8 Seeds

Auto-flowering Strains with High d-Limonene

Auto-flowering strains are your ticket to a speedy harvest. Most strains are ready to harvest 2-3 months from germination. Learn about auto-flowering strains compared to typical photoperiod strains..

5 Grow Tips to Maximize d-Limonene

Besides growing a high d-Limonene strain, here are grow tactics to maximize terpenes like d-Limonene in your buds after harvest.

  1. Not Hot – Avoid letting grow space get over 80°F / 27°F if possible. Learn how to keep the grow space cool and breezy.
  2. Not Humid – Avoid letting humidity get over 60% if possible. High humidity is a bud killer. It results in airy buds, slower growth, smaller yields, lower potency, and less smell overall. Plus high humidity can cause bud rot if buds get too fat. Learn all about humidity when growing cannabis.
  3. Harvest at the Right Time – Cannabis buds have peak potency and terpenes when buds are mature. Harvesting buds too early gives you buds with lower potency and smell. Give buds enough time to create all the good stuff! See pictures of ready-to-harvest cannabis buds.
  4. Dry Buds Properly – Slow drying buds over several day helps keep all your terpenes including d-Limonene. Most important, avoid air-drying buds in a place that gets hot or humid. Learn how to dry your cannabis buds like a pro.
  5. “Cure” Your Buds – Cure buds in jars for at least 2 weeks before smoking – Both the smell and potency/effects of cannabis buds improve and intensify during the curing process. Learn how to cure your buds perfectly every time.

Bonus Tip: I have not tried this, but some growers swear by Sweet Citrus by Botanicare.

The Botanicare Sweet line is a unique set of organic cannabis grow supplements that claim to “provides aroma and flavor” via “bioactive esters” that enhance bud fragrance and produces a specific smell in cannabis plants. Besides Citrus they also have an unflavored Raw Sugar Sweet supplement that seems to be the most popular from this line.

If you’re thinking about growing hemp or high-CBD strains of cannabis in order to harvest the CBD, you may be wondering how similar the process is to growing cannabis for THC.

The process is remarkably similar, but not exactly the same.

On a biological and legal level, the only difference between hemp and high-CBD or high-THC cannabis plants is… the amount of THC and CBD. These are all simply different strains of the cannabis plant.

This plant in the front is a high-CBD strain of cannabis, with low levels of THC. Those plants in the back? They are all high-THC strains of cannabis. It’s hard to tell the difference, isn’t it? That’s because the only difference is the THC percentage.

Hemp vs Cannabis vs Medical Marijuana: Like Different Strains of Roses

I look at my balcony and I have two rose bushes; a “Floribunda” and a “Fragrant Cloud”. They’re both strains of roses, but they grow differently and their flowers look and smell markedly different. The Floribunda grows lots of tiny orange roses that don’t have much of a smell, while the Fragrant Cloud makes just a few big hefty red roses that envelop the air with flowery perfume.

Each of these roses has their own “personality” but the actual plant care is basically the same. They get the same types of nutrients, watering, pruning, etc. This is basically what you’re looking at when it comes to different strains of cannabis, hemp or marijuana.

What is hemp and why is it legal?

Hemp was recently legalized on a federal level in the United States. But how is hemp different from cannabis?

There is exactly ONE difference between regular cannabis or marijuana and hemp….

The THC content. That’s it. You can have two strains of cannabis that look exactly the same, but if one contains less than 0.3% THC, it is considered hemp, while if it has even 0.4% THC by dry weight (in any part of the plant) it’s no longer considered to be hemp.

Learn more on the USDA government website (Excerpt: “The term ‘industrial hemp’ includes the plant Cannabis sativa L. and any part or derivative of the plant including seeds, whether or not it is used exclusively for industrial purposes (fiber and seed). The tetrahydrocannabinols (THC) concentration is the distinguishing factor between industrial hemp and marijuana. Industrial hemp cannot have a THC concentration more than 0.3 percent on a dry weight basis.”)

I know it seems like it should be more complicated than that, but that’s it. “Industrial hemp” is basically any strain of cannabis with extremely low levels of THC. The strains of hemp used by farmers typically have also been bred for a specific purpose such as providing fiber.

These plants are a type of industrial hemp. This cannabis strain has been selected to produce negligible amounts of THC and strong fibrous stalks.

Cannabis plants love bright, direct sunlight

How to Grow Cannabis or Hemp for CBD

If you want to grow your own CBD, the most important thing is to start with a high-CBD strain. You can’t force a cannabis plant to produce more CBD than its genes allow, and many if not most popular cannabis strains contain high levels of THC and less than 1% CBD. Genetics is key!

  1. Choose a high-CBD strain of cannabis. Note: if a plant contains more than 0.3% THC it is not considered hemp. If you’re concerned with THC percentages and making sure you’re growing hemp, it’s extremely important to get a strain from a trusted breeder.
  2. Grow mostly like typical cannabis. Here’s a 10-step guide to getting set up and growing your own cannabis. Here are tips for increasing CBD when growing cannabis.
  3. Pay attention to harvest time. For the highest levels of CBD, you should harvest plants at the beginning of the harvest window. Both CBD and THC start to degrade as buds continue to mature. If you harvest buds late there are a few differences. Buds harvested on the later side usually have slightly lower levels of CBD and THC, but higher levels of CBN. As a result, buds harvested later tend to be less psychoactive (due to less THC), and are more likely to make you feel sleepy or have a strong body effect (due to more CBN). Because of the various ways cannabinoids interact with each other, it’s important to experiment with harvesting early vs later to see what works best for you. Just because harvesting early gives the absolute highest level of CBD doesn’t mean the resulting buds will work the best for you. You should experiment with different harvest times because every body reacts differently!
  4. Keep the leaves. CBD is contained not just in the flowers/buds of the plant, but also in the leaves. The CBD concentration is relatively low so the leaves are not suitable to smoke, but the CBD can be extracted by turning the leaves into things like butter, tincture or oil. Note: CBD extractions made from leaves are typically less concentrated/strong than extractions made from the actual flowers/buds.
  5. Extracting CBD. Unlike the leaves, the CBD-rich buds/flowers are often smoked or vaped. However, many people prefer to consume them in some type of edible form. This has a slower onset but the effects tend to be longer-lasting. For the most part, any method that extracts THC will also extract CBD, as they’re both cannabinoids that easily attach to oil. The problem is you can’t easily separate THC and CBD from each other. So if the starting plant matter has no THC, then a simple extraction into butter/oil/tincture will extract the CBD. But if you’re trying to get just CBD from plant matter that has both THC and CBD, well you need equipment for that! This is why it’s so important you start with the right strain. If the plant produces only the cannabinoids you want, you don’t have to do anything but extract and enjoy them.

We’re currently testing various methods to further increase CBD levels when growing small hemp plants indoors. We’re also collaborating with experts to produce the best butters, oils, tinctures and CBD-rich candies so you have access to professional quality CBD sources at home. Stay tuned!

Using and Storing Tinctures

What Is A Tincture?

A tincture is a concentrated herbal extract. In the cannabis world, this means it’s an herbal extract that has some of the useful properties of weed. Cannabis tinctures are usually made from alcohol but they can also be made with glycerin to skip the intoxicating effects of the – usually high-proof – alcohol.

3 jars containing cannabis tinctures, each one made in a different way.

3 bottles of tincture ready to go!

Today’s article will teach you 4 different ways to make cannabis tinctures, from the most simple (put weed and alcohol together in a jar and shake) to the most automated (make it in a specialized tincture machine). Let’s get started!

Edible vs Topical

Some tinctures are made to be ingested while some are made to go on your skin. The difference comes from how the tincture was made. If you make tinctures with food-grade materials like Don Q 151 rum (a good replacement for old classic Bacardi 151, which was discontinued in 2016), Everclear, Glycerin, etc., then the tincture is going to be edible. If you’re making tinctures with stuff that isn’t safe to ingest, like isopropyl alcohol, balms, or lotions, then you’re making a topical tincture that should be applied to your skin instead of being eaten. Don’t make edible tinctures with isopropyl alcohol, it’s very dangerous to eat that stuff!

Don’t ingest anything made from isopropyl alcohol!

Please don't try to ingest isopropyl alcohol

Alcohol vs. Glycerin

Simply put, alcohol is better for making tinctures because it’s better at bonding to THC than glycerin.

Alcohol makes tinctures faster than glycerin because alcohol bonds with THC more easily. Any alcohol being used for tinctures should be high-proof to absorb as much THC as possible. High-proof alcohol can be tough to find depending on where you live, so you can substitute it for the highest-proof alcohol you can get, but expect weaker results.

Glycerin is a plant-based solution that is great for tinctures when you don’t want any of the taste or intoxicating effects of alcohol. Although glycerin is a great vehicle for tinctures, it’s not as good as alcohol at bonding to the THC in your cannabis. In fact, some growers prefer to make tincture with alcohol, and then add glycerin afterward. For stronger glycerin tincture, you could evaporate some of the alcohol and add glycerin in its place.

We’re using 100% Food-grade Ethyl Alcohol

Glycerin and alcohol actually work well together!

Types of Alcohol

If you have easy access to Everclear, you’re already set. Everclear is a great type of alcohol to use for tinctures because it’s pure and it’s edible (which is super important).

You can also use a 151-proof rum like Don Q 151. Although it’s not as good of a choice as Everclear, it’s strong enough to bond to THC easily and it’ll definitely get the job done.

As another option, you can get a super-strong Polish alcohol called Spirytus (thanks Ed Rosenthal!). Although you won’t find it just sitting on the shelves of your local supermarket, you can order it and have it shipped to you from a reputable company like BevMo. Spirytus is stronger than anything that’s 151 proof and is a great substitute for those who can’t get Everclear. Otherwise, Don Q 151 will do the job just fine.

If you can’t get Everclear or something similar in your area, a 151-proof rum (like Don Q 151 rum) is a good substitute.

Safety first!

Making tinctures involves the use of high-proof alcohol. All of the alcohols we recommend are great for making tinctures, but they’re also flammable!

Here are a few steps to keep tincture creation as uneventful as possible:

  1. No open flames – Unfortunately, that means no smoking. Even a small spark can be enough to create a massive fire under the right conditions.
  2. No gas stoves – It’s insanely dangerous to attempt cooking tinctures near gas-burner stoves. Alcohol fumes + a gas stove is a recipe for an accidental fire. If your stove uses gas, try using a hot plate if possible, but under no circumstances should you take the chance of using a gas burner stove.
  3. Ensure Good Ventilation – High-proof alcohol makes fumes that can be easily ignited when they build up. If you keep the area well-ventilated, the concentration of flammable fumes in the air stays low enough that it can’t be combusted. In other words, make sure there’s new, clean air in your cooking area to avoid a flaming mishap.
  4. Keep a dry-chemical fire extinguisher handy – As long as you follow the rules above, you’ll be safely making your own tinctures. However, it’s always a good idea to be prepared by owning a working fire extinguisher! You can get extinguishers at hardware stores or online. It’s a good thing to have around your house in case of an emergency whether you’re making tinctures or not.

When it comes to making tinctures with high-proof alcohol, fire is your worst enemy!

When it comes to high-proof alcohol, fire is your worst enemy!

Weed to Alcohol Ratios

There is quite a bit of opinion on how much weed/alcohol to use when making tinctures. The amount a person is looking for can vary greatly depending on what effects they’re looking for. Here are some starting guidelines that you can try first and adjust as necessary for your specific case:

  • Mild – 1g of weed to 30ml of alcohol (1oz of weed to ~850ml of alcohol)
  • Medium – 1g of weed to 20ml of alcohol (1oz of weed to ~570ml of alcohol)
  • Strong – 1g of weed to 10ml of alcohol (1oz of weed to ~280ml of alcohol)

Again, none of these measurements are set in stone. If you try one of these ratios and it feels too strong, move to one of the milder ratios and try it again. Too weak? Try one of the stronger ratios. If you’re already at the strongest/weakest ratio and it still needs to be adjusted, that’s no big deal! Just add less alcohol to make the tincture stronger, or add more alcohol to make it weaker. You can also evaporate some of the alcohol to increase potency, or add glycerin to your tincture to decrease potency without adding more alcohol. Tinctures are very customizable!

How to Make Tinctures

Old-School Method (aka Green Dragon)

This is the slowest method, but it’s also the most famous. You’ve probably heard of “Green Dragon” if you haven’t already had it. The fact that it takes almost no extra materials can’t be hurting its popularity…

Supplies:

Steps:

  1. Decarboxylate 1 oz of weed.
  2. Add the weed to a glass container like a mason jar.
  3. Add about 300ml of alcohol to the jar. Close the jar tight.
  4. Place the jar somewhere cool and dark for about 3 months. Shake up the jar when the mood strikes you.
    1. Alternate Method: Shake the heck out of the jar over the course of an hour; many people believe this is just as effective as waiting for 3 months. I don’t know if it’s just as effective, but I tested the 60-minute method and it definitely works. It’s like a less-quick, quick-wash.

Old-school “Green Dragon” can take a long time to make!

Make sure to shake your jar of Green Dragon every so often.

The Ed Rosenthal Method

I’m a fan of Ed Rosenthal. He comes up with original (or at least original to me) ways of doing things, but even better, he always has a reason behind his methods. This technique is from his book on concentrates/edibles called “Beyond Buds: Next Generation” and I suggest you pick up a copy. It’s a beautiful book with great info and I’m sure you’ll learn something new!

Supplies:

Beyond Buds: Next Generation by Ed Rosenthal. I own a copy and it’s good!

Beyond Buds: Next Generation by Ed Rosenthal

Steps:

  1. Decarboxylate 1oz of weed
  2. Add the weed to your strainer, then put the strainer in the large metal bowl
  3. Fill the bowl with water until the weed floats, and let it sit for 90 minutes.
    1. This should help leech out some of the chlorophyll from your bud.
  4. Pull the strainer from the bowl so the water drains.
  5. Collect your wet weed into a ball and squeeze the water out with your hands.
  6. Break up the squeezed weed and add it to your blender.
  7. Add about 300ml of alcohol to the blender and blend on low for 5 minutes.
  8. Let the mixture sit for an hour, then blend again for 5 minutes.
  9. Pour the mixture through a strainer into a different bowl, making sure to collect the used weed material.
    1. Make sure to squeeze any tincture out of the material.
    2. The mixture you just filtered is a potent cannabis tincture! Put it to the side so you can store it later.
  10. Put the used weed material in a container with fresh alcohol to soak for another hour.
  11. Pour the mixture through a strainer again, but this time you can discard the used weed.
  12. Pour your tincture through some cheesecloth spread out over a bowl to filter out particulates.
    1. This step isn’t necessary, but it looks nicer.
  13. Pour your tincture into an amber or cobalt blue jar that can be sealed.
  14. Your tincture is ready!

That’s an ounce of weed rolled into a ball. We played with it more than we should have.

Water Bath Method

The water bath method is a fast way to make tinctures, but it also requires the most care since you have to make sure the water bath doesn’t get too hot.
Oddly enough, this method is the lower-budget version of using a Magical Butter Machine since it does all the same things but needs you to be there to take action and monitor for safety.

Important: Do not perform this method with any open flames anywhere in your house! Evaporating alcohol creates a flammable vapor, and having an open flame anywhere near flammable vapor is a recipe for firey disaster. Please be safe!

Supplies:

Steps:

  1. Decarboxylate 1oz of weed.
  2. Grind up your cannabis.
  3. Add the weed to your mason jar.
  4. Add about 300ml of your alcohol of choice to the jar.
  5. IMPORTANT: DO NOT CLOSE OR SEAL THE JAR!
  6. Fill the pot with 1” of water and place on an electric stove (no gas stoves!) on medium.
  7. Use your thermometer to make sure the water is no hotter than 165°F.
  8. Place the unsealed mason jar with your weed and alcohol into the pot.
    1. This is called a water bath. See the picture below to see what it looks like.
  9. Adjust the temperature as needed until the alcohol/weed mixture gets to 165°F and let it cook for 30 minutes.
    1. Stay next to the water bath and make sure it doesn’t get too hot (above 165°F).
  10. Remove the jar from the water bath and let it cool for about 30 minutes.
  11. Pour your tincture through some cheesecloth spread out over a bowl to filter out particulates.
    1. This step isn’t necessary, but it looks nicer.
  12. Pour your tincture into an amber or cobalt blue jar that can be sealed.
  13. You’re done!

Watch the temperature closely when using a water bath.

Making Tinctures with a Magical Butter Machine

The Magical Butter Machine might be the best way to make tinctures. It stirs tinctures more than a human could, it constantly heats the material, and it has infinite patience, unlike a human being. It can stir and heat your tincture for 8 straight hours with no work on your part past the initial setup, which is crazy.

Supplies:

Steps:

  1. Decarboxylate 1oz of weed.
  2. Add the weed to your Magical Butter Machine without grinding it.
  3. Add 2 cups (or more for a less potent product) of your alcohol to the machine.
    1. 2cups is the bare minimum you can add.
  4. Set the temperature to 130°F.
  5. Set the timer to 4 hours (tincture)
    1. …or set it to 8 hours for a stronger product.
  6. Let the machine finish, then unplug it and let your mixture cool for 30 minutes.
  7. Pour your tincture through some cheesecloth spread out over a bowl to filter out particulates.
    1. This step isn’t necessary, but it looks nicer.
  8. Pour your tincture into an amber or cobalt blue jar that can be sealed.
  9. Tincture time!

How to Use Tinctures

There’s no perfect recipe for how to try tinctures since everyone has different tastes and tolerances. Here’s the best advice I can give for how to try your product:

  • Get “Boston Round” jars with droppers. These make it much easier to measure out doses of your tincture so you can repeat what works for you.
  • Try “Sublingual Administration”: Place a few drops of tincture under your tongue until it absorbs. This method provides quicker THC absorption with less alcohol intoxication.
  • Don’t try tinctures for the first time if you have important things to do. Testing is best done on a free day at home just in case it’s too strong.
  • If your tolerance is low, or If you don’t know your tolerance, start with a drop or two of tincture then wait 1.5-2 hours to see how it affects you.
  • For those with battle-tested, higher tolerances, try a full dropper and wait 1.5-2 hours to see how you feel.
  • You can also add tinctures to a shot’s worth of a non-alcoholic drink with a strong flavor such as cranberry juice or root beer.

Storing Tinctures

  • Alcohol tinctures last multiple years if kept in an amber/cobalt glass bottle in your refrigerator. The amber/cobalt coloring keeps light from degrading the cannabinoids in your tinctures.
  • Glycerin tinctures can last a few months if refrigerated.

“How much will electricity cost each month?”

If you’re just growing a few marijuana plants for personal use, it will cost you $20-$100+/month for electricity, depending on what grow lights (electricity) and nutrients you use. On average, I’d say a hobby-size grower might pay about $50/month to grow, but it depends greatly on your setup and local electricity costs! How much will electricity cost each month?

But remember the most important factors to stealth growing: “No tell, no smell, no sell.” Never tell anyone, not even your best friend, that you’re growing. Be on top of preventing smells, and never ever sell cannabis. Breaking one of those 3 principles is how 99% of growers get found out!

“What if my plants get sick?”

If you run into problems, our "diagnose your plant" tool with pictures will help you figure out what's wrong! The most common issue a grower runs into is a pH imbalance. Barring that, your marijuana plants likely either have a nutrient deficiency, heat or light stress, or are being attacked by some sort of marijuana mold, pest or bug. Whether you call it weed, cannabis, sinsemilla, skunk, pot, marijuana, or something else, the plant known as Cannabis Sativa is a hardy weed in the wild and can actually be easy to grow indoors at home when you know what to do.

Growing Medical Marijuana

“Medical marijuana” has become a household name. The body of evidence for medical marijuana in the treatment of cancer and other illnesses is growing every day. And for those who need medical marijuana, growing weed indoors is the perfect way to ensure a safe, regular supply of buds, for cheap.

In fact, when you grow weed indoors for personal use, you often end up with way too much. The Grow Weed Easy website will teach you how to grow your own beautiful huge cannabis colas like this one! If you catch the growing bug like I did, and if you start enjoying the process of tending your cannabis garden just for the sake of gardening, you’re going to have to find a way to press, cook, freeze, and concentrate all your extra buds. 🙂

As you probably know, both medical marijuana and recreational cannabis have been decriminalized or legalized in many places around the world and weed is becoming legal in more places every day! Yet there still aren’t many simple indoor “how to grow weed” guides for beginners (even for those who legally grow, such as medical marijuana users and those who live in places where marijuana is legalized for personal use).

Unfortunately, there is no “best” medical marijuana strain just like there is no best medicine, but each strain has something different to offer, and may or may not be suited to your needs!

An example of a medical marijuana bud, looks just like a regular bud, doesn't it? Many different strains of cannabis have "medical" effects, so medical marijuana can refer to a lot of things.

“Medical” vs “Non-Medical” Marijuana

What’s the difference between medical vs non-medical marijuana? There’s a range of effects that people can get from different strains of cannabis, and even each strain can affect people differently.

The main ingredient in cannabis is a special class of compounds known as cannabinoids. These interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system (which is known to affect many of our body’s natural functions, including mood, appetite, and the ability to feel pain).

THC, CBD and a variety of other “cannabinoids” are responsible for many of the recreational and medical properties people associate with cannabis

Example of plants growing under a 315 LEC grow light

The most commonly known cannabinoid is THC, which affects appetite and is what causes many of the psychoactive mental effects people associate with cannabis. However, there are hundreds of other cannabinoids found in different strains, many of which we’re just starting to learn about.

The second most famous cannabinoid is CBD, which has the potential to help people with anxiety and also seems to help prevent some adults and children from experiencing seizures.

All the cannabinoids react with each other! For example, higher levels of CBD actually reduce the mental affects of THC, which can be good or bad depending on what you’re looking for. On top of all the interactions between cannabinoids, there are lots of other compounds in cannabis (known as terpenes) which give cannabis its smell and and may alter the effects even further.

Example of auto-flowering cannabis plants growing under a 250W HPS grow light

So without a whole lot of scientific research (which luckily is changing now that cannabis is becoming legalized all over the country!) the best guidance for choosing the best medical marijuana strain comes from anecdotal information and a lot of experimentation!

Learn more about different cannabinoids

What to Look For in a Medical Strain

When shopping for strains online, you usually have the ability to see what to expect from each strain before you buy. Most breeders provide basic information about the potency, smell and mental/physical effects, which will guide you towards finding what you want.

Learn more on how to research strains online

But there are some general things to remember when it comes to cannabinoids…

THC (delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol)

THC is the main psychoactive component in marijuana buds, and mimics the action of anandamide, which is a naturally occurring cannabinoid in the brain.

Quick Summary of THC

  • THC has the strongest psychoactive effects
  • THC can cause feelings of creativity, curiosity, or excited well-being
  • High THC levels may cause people to feel anxious, disorientated, drugged or “messed up”

THC appears to…

  • Relieve Certain Types of Pain, Especially Nerve Pain
  • Help with Nausea and Lack of Appetite
  • Be Neuroprotective (help stop brain from degenerating over time)
  • Cause Relaxation
  • Cause Euphoria
  • Contribute to Altered Space-Time Perception

Learn how to get high levels of THC in your buds

Having a high THC content by itself does not necessarily mean that the marijuana is great. It’s important to look at the whole experience caused by the plant, which includes considering the effects of CBD.

In fact, the following negative effects of THC are often prevented when higher levels of CBD are present:

  • Lapses in Memory
  • Disorientation
  • Anxiety

CBD (Cannabidiol)

Quick Summary of CBD

  • CBD is not psychoactive and doesn’t make you feel impaired
  • CBD appears to have many positive health implications
  • The presence of CBD can alter some of the subjective effects of THC. Higher levels of CBD reduces the psychoactive effects of THC, which can be a great way for some patients to get the medical benefits of THC without having to feel “high”.

We’ve known for a long time that CBD is found in cannabis and hemp plants, but it’s only recently that we’ve started to study and explore the health benefits.

CBD appears to:

  • Reduce pain
  • Prevent seizures and spasms for some people
  • Relieve some types of inflammation
  • Reduce anxiety

CBD has also been shown to:

  • Have a calming effect
  • Act as an antipsychotic for people suffering from schizophrenia
  • Offer relief for some patients suffering from Multiple Sclerosis, Fibromyalgia, and Epilepsy
  • Possibly help stop the growth of cancer by inhibiting cancer cell growth
  • Prevent the memory impairment and disorientation associated with THC

Learn how to get high levels of CBD in your buds

In addition to the THC and CBD levels, each strain can cause other general effects. Some strains tend to make people feel energetic and creative, while other strains can be sedating and relaxing.

When choosing strains, the breeder will tell you in general what you can expect. With the best breeders, you get what they say you will get. With less trustworthy breeders, you might get more variation than you might expect.

Examples of Some of the Best Medical Strains

There are thousands and thousands of cannabis strains, and there are new ones every day! Because of the sheer number of strains there is now way I could possibly list them all .

So I just wanted to share a short list of some of the best and most consistent strains for medical marijuana patients, to help you start your journey!

High-THC Strains

  • Many of the modern strains and cannabis cup winners have been selectively bred to be high in THC. This produces the most mind-altering effects.
  • After a certain point, higher levels of THC don’t necessarily mean the buds feel more potent. I’ve tried cannabis with 20% THC that feels even more potent than buds that have been tested at 30% THC. After about 15-20% THC, I believe the potency of strains should be determined on a case-by-case basis as opposed to just the THC numbers. In fact, all strains should be judged on a case-by-case basis if possible.
  • It’s easy to find a huge variety of high-THC strains – the sky is the limit!

Some of my favorite High-THC Strains

> Sour Diesel by Reserva Privada (this breeder now goes by DNA Genetics) – this strain has been described as “insanely strong” and there’s a good reason for that! Growers should be aware that this strain gets really big, really tall, really fast. With careful plant training you can achieve great yields with this strain. It does really well with heat but tends to grow slowly if it gets cold. Unfortunately, the strain is often sold out these days so grab it if you see it on sale!

> OG Kush by Dinafem – OG Kush is a world famous strain which is very high in THC and low in CBD, giving it a very potent overall effect. It has an “up” (or sometimes even “hallucinogenic”) effect that people love.

>  White Widow by Dutch Passion has become a legendary strain, and continues to win Cannabis Cups and be served coffee shops and dispensaries around the world. The popularity of White Widow is based on its appearance, strength, and ability to make people feel uplifted and happy. It’s known as White Widow because its buds become so covered in trichomes/glitter that buds can actually look white. The version of White Widow by Nirvana is another great choice that is extremely easy to grow (it is actually one of the first strains I ever grew).

High-CBD Strains

  • Auto-flowering strains tend to have higher levels of CBD than photoperiod strains because they are descended from high-CBD wild hemp plants. There are also autos that have been specifically bred to produce high CBD levels.
  • Many high-CBD strains are becoming available online as seed, since many breeders are now selecting for plants with higher levels of CBD and lower THC
  • Unfortunately, the best high-CBD plants to grow are the ones that have already been tested for CBD content, which means starting with clones or getting your buds tested. However, for those who don’t have access to medical marijuana clones (most of us), there are now seed options that allow you to produce high-CBD levels at home

Trustworthy High-CBD Strains Available as Seeds

> CBD Amnesia – powerful high-CBD strain

CBD Critical Mass by CBD Crew – This breeder has specialized in breeding high-CBD strains since 2009, and offers some of the best high-CBD strains.

CBD Med Gom Auto by CBD Crew  – Same great breeder, this time an auto-flowering high-CBD strain

Hopefully, these lists will help get you started on your journey to find the best medical marijuana strain for you!

In order to smoke or process our buds, it’s usually necessary to break up the buds first, especially if they’re really dense!

Most growers chop or grind their marijuana buds so they are easier to use!

When smoking, grinding help your buds go further by “aerating” the buds (make them fluffy) so they burn more efficiently. This is can make buds feel stronger and last longer compared to breaking it up with your fingers!

Dense buds like this are extremely difficult to break up properly with your fingers

A dense marijuana bud like this needs to be ground up before you can use it!

Most common tools for grinding or chopping cannabis:

  1. Hands/fingers – just okay
  2. Scissors – a little better than using your hands
  3. Grinders from Around the House – tools that are meant to grind herbs, coffee and tobacco all do a pretty good job with cannabis, too. However, these usually don’t have any way to catch kief that falls off your buds.
  4. Specially Made Cannabis Grinders – these can go from terrible to great, depending on the model!

There are a millions ways to chop up your cannabis, and many work well, but if you are serious about getting the most from your buds, there’s a style of grinder that rules them all.

Grinders that are made for marijuana come in many different colors and models….

There are many different models of grinders on Amazon.comGet this Platinum marijuana grinder on Amazon.com!

But which grinder works the best for weed?

Example of ground-up-cannabis-bud

4-Piece Cosmic Case – The Best Cannabis Grinder!

Important Note: Unfortunately, production of the Cosmic grinder seems to have halted. We’re devastated by the loss of this first-rate grinder, but we’re currently testing dozens(!) to find the next best thing. For now, we’re using our old Cosmic grinders and the Santa Cruz Shredder, which has been a good backup. If you have a grinder for us to try, let us know here!

I’ve used dozens of grinders over the years, and some are definitely better than others! Many of them can be a really great choice, but there’s one to rule them all.

Now-a-days, I will only use a 4-piece Cosmic Case grinder. It may not look like anything special (though they do come in various colors and sizes), but that’s not what makes it great. Its greatness lies in the fact that it is has been designed by cannabis connoisseurs from the bottom up.

Get the Cosmic Case cannabis grinder for grinding cannabis on Amazon.com!

First, let me warn you about the price… They’re realllllllly expensive. I’m talking up to $90 for their large models!

That may seem obscene, and it honestly is an obscene price for a grinder (which are normally closer to $15).

But if you grind up a lot of bud in your life, I think it’s worth it to invest in a Cosmic Case. I only got one because a guy at a head shop convinced me, but I’m glad he did because I’ve used them ever since.

About the Cosmic Case Grinder

It’s a sturdy piece of metal with good weight to it, and it has an overall very solid design.

The 4-piece “Large” version looks like this when you open it up.

The 4-piece large Cosmic Case grinder is the best grinder for cannabis!

Like all high-end grinders, it comes with a kief trap to collect all the kief/trichomes/glitter that naturally comes off your buds during the grinding process. That way you have kief for later!

Note: When a grinder is labeled as a “4-piece” grinder, the 4th piece is the kief trap (often called a “pollen trap” by sellers).

Kief/trichomes collect in the pollen trap so you can use it later!

The kief trap of the Cosmic Case grinder for grinding weed buds

It also has a very strong magnetic top that lets you easily open it up, yet the magnet is strong enough that it won’t fall off on its own even if you hold it upside down or keep it in a purse or backpack all day. This may seem like a small thing, but it’s a huge improvement over grinders with weak magnets (where the top comes off all the time) or screw-on tops (which get all gunked up after a while and won’t screw off easily anymore).

Those are great features that you should get from any high-quality grinder! However, the Cosmic Case has something else that makes it special….
What Makes It the Best Grinder?

The thing that makes this grinder so great is the weird holes it uses. They look like they’re going to let all your bud through in huge pieces because they’re so much larger than standard holes, but it doesn’t actually do that.

For whatever reason, these oddly shaped holes are just plain better (in my opinion) than the regular round ones. They shear the buds into a different consistency than normal grinders, and buds never get ground to dust.

The uniquely shaped holes shear your buds instead of grinding them into powder

The shearing makes any buds kind of fluffy, even if you’re using dense buds that are tough to break up.

I have found that buds actually seem stronger/more potent compared to not grinding them because the ground bud burns all the way through evenly in just one breath. This makes buds last longer since you use less at a time (though it can give you a head rush!).

The buds become fluffy due to the shearing action – this extra air makes buds burn better and they’ll often actually feel more potent!

It works great even with extremely dense buds!

Extremely dense buds need to be ground up first before you can use them!

Check out the 4-Piece Cosmic Case on Amazon!

When you use a great grinder like this, your buds will feel more potent and as a result, your buds will last longer. Despite the cost, these are a good investment! It’s a top-notch present for a fellow enthusiast, or as a present to yourself, and I know you’ll become a believer as soon as you try one the first time!

When it comes to patients using medical marijuana for symptom relief, it's important to make sure you're ingesting cannabis in the most healthy way possible.

The most common way to get the effects of cannabis buds is to smoke it, but it's actually a lot healthier and effective for a medical marijuana patient to "vape" (vaporize) their buds.

Why Vape Medical Marijuana?

  • Healthier & less likely to irritate lungs – smoking is bad for you
  • More discreet smell – although vaping still definitely has a smell, it won't smell nearly as strongly of marijuana, and the smell is less likely to stick to you.
  • Harder to "overdose" since vaping provides slower and more gradual effects than smoking. It will take longer to vaporize a similar amount of cannabis compared to smoking, but this also allows a patient to dose themselves better.
  • Bud lasts a lot longer/goes a lot further since vaping is much more efficient than smoking. Normally a lot of the "potency" is lost during the smoking process, while very little is wasted when vaping. In other words, you need less bud to achieve the same effects!

Which Vaporizer?

These are some of the most popular vaporizers. This is no where close to a comprehensive list. There are literally hundreds of different vaporizers available today!

My first vaporizer was a Magic Flight Launch BoxPopular Table-Top Vaporizers

  • The Volcano – famous type of vaporizer that comes with all the bells and whistles, but is incredibly expensive!!!
  • Arizer – many of the same features at a much lower price

Popular Portable Vaporizers

  • Pax
  • Arizer Solo
  • Magic Flight Launch Box (pictured) – has a learning curve and can be tough for first-timers to use, but probably the cheapest portable vape!

Tips for Vaping Cannabis

Vaping your cannabis at different temperatures can have different effects, because different cannabinoids are "released" at different temperatures.

  • Low Temps for Head Effect – For more of a cerebral, in-your-head effect, keep the temperature relatively low. This gives you the highest percentage of THC since there's less of many of the other cannabinoids.
  • High Temps For Stronger Body Effect – For more of a strong body effect, turn the temperature up higher. This burns many more cannabinoids, and alters/enhances the effects of THC.
  • Vaped buds should be brown, not black – It's normal to see a little vapor when you breath out but if your vaped buds are turning black it means you are smoking them! After vaping, buds should appear to be a medium or dark brown.
  • Save vaped buds for edibles! Vaped buds can be used to make butter, canna caps or other edibles. For most edible recipes, you have to cook the weed first to "activate" it for edibles, but vaping accomplishes the same thing so you actually get to skip that step and use your buds directly. By keeping your vaped buds (sometimes referred to online as Already Vaped Buds or AVB) and using them to make edibles, you get to use the same cannabis twice!

Conclusion: Time to Research!

I hope this short article helps you get started on your search for information. This website is mostly meant for growing cannabis and I know this article isn't comprehensive, but a lot of you have written in with questions about vaping and I wanted to share what I know. I hope this helps you start your journey towards finding the right vaporizer!

CBD (Cannabidiol) is a cannabinoid found in Medical Marijuana which may offer relief for some symptoms including anxiety and seizuresWhen it comes to trying to increase the amount of CBD in your cannabis for medical reasons, the number one most important thing is choosing to grow a high-CBD strain. (What’s the difference between CBD, THC and other cannabinoids?)

The fact is, you can never make a cannabis plant produce more CBD than the amount limited by its genetics. Many of the popular adult-use cannabis strains available today can only produce minuscule amounts of CBD, often 0.5% or lower.

Older cannabis strains tend to have somewhat higher CBD levels, especially those from before the year 2000, but many modern strains were bred over several generations exclusively for high THC levels, and CBD levels dwindled over time. It’s interesting that now we are going back to producing high-CBD strains. As cannabis becomes more popular, it has become obvious to me that each person is looking for something different.

Example of “Thai Stick” Buds From 1976. Older strains like this one often had higher levels of CBD than most modern cannabis strains until recently.

Example of "Thai Stick" Buds From 1976 - older strains like this one usually have higher levels of CBD than most modern strains

Benefits of CBD

  • Lots of evidence that it provides relief for a variety of symptoms including seizures, anxiety, spasms and nausea. It can also provide some people relief from multiple sclerosis, IBS, PTSD, cancer treatments and many other conditions. We are learning more every day!
  • Higher levels of CBD in cannabis will mute the psychoactive effects of THC, so that it has less of an effect on your thinking, while still providing the same benefits
  • More of a relaxing and less of a “speedy” or “racing” effect with buds.

There are a few things you can do while growing which help maximize the CBD content with the genetics you have, but first lets discuss strains, since that is hands-down the most important part of producing CBD!

What is Considered a “High CBD” Strain?

Generally, strains with 2% or more of CBD is considered to be “high CBD.” However, for a lot of patients, the ratio between CBD and THC is more important than the individual percentages. For example, a 1:1 ratio of CBD to THC would mute the effects of THC but the effects would still be there. But once you start getting to the point where you have 2:1 or 3:1 CBD to THC, the buds may not have any noticeable psychoactive effects at all. So something with 12% CBD and 4% THC would not have a whole lot of psychoactive effect even though there’s a significant amount of THC there.

Where Do I Get High-CBD Strains?

  • Many high-CBD strains are available online in seed form
  • There are also clone-only strains which are available in plant form only

Trustworthy High-CBD Strains Available as Seeds

  • Royal Queen Painkiller XL by Royal Queen Seeds (1:1 ratio – 9% THC and 9% CBD) – Royal Queen Seeds produces strains that are easy to grow and buds turn out as described. Painkiller XL is their premier CBD strain.
  • Green Poison CBD by Sweet Seeds (minimum 1:1 up to 1:2 THC/CBD ratio) – Kind of a weird name for a CBD strain, frankly, but it’s because it’s based on their excellent “green poison” strain which they worked with to ramp up the CBD. Sweet Seeds strains are always a great relaxing chill option, and their CBD strains take that vibe to the next level.
  • CBD Charlotte’s Angel by Dutch Passion (less than 1% THC, up to 16% CBD) – If you want to get max CBD without being able to feel any mind-altering psychoactive effects, this is an excellent option

Purchasing from specialized breeders online gives you access to high-CBD strains no matter where you live in the world

Happy, healthy high-CBD cannabis strain in a solo cup - though CBD content is MOSTLY determined by genetics, there are a few things you can do to help maximize CBD content when growing cannabis!

Growing Tactics to Increase CBD Levels

  • General good care – keep plant healthy and avoid major problems until harvest because sickly plants produce overall lower levels of cannabinoids.
  • Harvest at the right time – if you harvest too early your plant won’t have reached the highest levels of CBD yet

Growing Tactics That May Increase CBD Levels

A young cannabis plant - high-CBD Medical Marijuana strainThis section is based solely on a 6-year study about industrial hemp, which is closely related to but not the same as cannabis varieties grown for their buds. The researchers followed several different types of hemp plants grown outside, and in their study the following factors were associated with the plants producing higher levels of CBD:

  • Warm soil temperature
  • Warm air temperature
  • Lower levels of precipitation (rain)

It’s hard to know if these factors will influence the CBD content of cannabis plants grown indoors, but I do think it’s a good idea to keep things warm (at least above 70°F/20°C which is the minimum recommended temperature for optimum growth) and avoid overwatering!

What Makes a Strain “Medical”?

What’s the difference between “medical” and non-medical marijuana?

Short Answer: There is no objective difference between adult-use and medical marijuana.

Wait, what?

When it comes to cannabis, there are thousands of varieties with a wide spectrum of possible effects. While some of these effects are more “medical” than others, a strain that offers relief to one patient could make symptoms worse for another patient (and vice versa). Therefore, what you should focus on is finding a strain that offers relief for the specific symptoms you’re suffering from. It also usually takes some trial and error to figure out what works best for you and your body.

Is this “medical” marijuana? The answer may surprise you. It depends on your symptoms and how your body reacts!

Jack Herer is a famous cannabis strain good for both medical marijuana patients and those who just want to soar!

There are so many cannabis strains that it’s impossible to neatly categorize them all. People often discuss the differences between “indica” and “sativa” strains when it comes to medical marijuana, but nearly every strain of cannabis is a hybrid.

To add another layer of complexity, we’re still learning how different compounds in cannabis affect humans. Recently, researchers in Italy discovered THCP, a powerful new cannabinoid that we didn’t know existed. There’s evidence that other cannabis derivatives such as terpenes and cannabis flavonoids may be responsible for some of the medical effects of cannabis, but we don’t fully understand how everything works together. Until there’s more objective research, a lot of medical marijuana patients must experiment to figure out which strains work best. Unfortunately, it’s not always easy to predict.

What should you do?

Instead of focusing on whether a strain is indica or sativa, or some other aspect like how it looks/smells, it’s often more useful to choose genetics based on the known effects and reviews from other patients.

Does medical marijuana get you “messed up?”

While many strains of cannabis have strong mental effects, some varieties are completely non-psychoactive. Non-psychoactive varieties of cannabis won’t affect your thinking much (if at all). Non-psychoactive varieties of cannabis are usually high in CBD with almost no THC. These low-THC strains are popular for the relief of anxiety, insomnia, and seizures.

Some cannabis strains affect your thinking, while others do not

Medical marijuana is not known to "cure" anything, however we do know that for some patients it offers relief from symptoms

However, many patients do use high-THC varieties of cannabis for the relief of certain symptoms such as pain and nausea. High-THC strains will get you “high” alongside any symptom relief.

What are the medical marijuana laws in your US state?

An example of a medical marijuana bud, looks just like a regular bud, doesn't it? Many different strains of cannabis have "medical" effects, so medical marijuana can refer to a lot of things.

What Diseases Can Medical Marijuana Cure?

It is really really important to get out there that cannabis has not been proven to “cure” anything. Despite how much I love this plant and personally benefit from its properties, there is no credible scientific evidence that cannabis is some sort of cure-all.

That’s not to say that medical marijuana/cannabis is without relieving properties. In fact, cannabis is so reliable at giving relief to those in need that it’s been available for medical use in California for almost 20 years. As of 2020, there are several countries as well as over 30 states in the USA with some form of legislation to allow cannabis for those in need.

However, there are unfortunately many people willing to offer false hope to very sick people by saying that cannabis can cure their cancer, MS, PTSD, or epilepsy. When someone says that cannabis can “cure” something, their comments should be taken with a healthy dose of skepticism unless you’re given solid evidence that legitimizes their claim. Again, as of yet, there is no proof that marijuana “cures” anything in that it’s never been proven to completely eliminate a disease or condition.

The evidence that medical marijuana “cures” any condition is not conclusive

Moby Dick medical marijuana cola - great for the relief of pain!

I’m not saying that medical marijuana doesn’t cure anything, just that we don’t currently have concrete evidence that it does. And when it comes to evaluating your possible medical options, I believe you must look at the evidence, and not go by word of mouth from people who are not medical practitioners.

Unfortunately, despite what you may have heard, there is no credible evidence that marijuana “cures” anything (though research is ongoing). What marijuana has actually been shown to do is offer relief from specific symptoms.

There is a lot of substantive evidence that some people are experiencing relief from cannabis for various symptoms, and that’s the focus of this article.

Which Strains Work for Which Symptoms?

I can give you some general guidelines (find them below) to help you get started, but there are no absolutes when it comes to the effects of different strains. Not only do strains have different effects if they’re grown under different conditions, the same buds also affect people differently.

Buds of a high-CBD medical marijuana strain look like any other... on the outside. But inside the cannabinoid profile is different.

A strain that aggravates anxiety for one person could reduce pain or nausea for a different patient. Buds that prevent one person from having seizures could actually trigger seizures for someone else.

This huge spectrum of effects is part of why we need to legally reschedule cannabis as a whole plant, so we can start to tease apart the specific components of cannabis that cause each specific effect. Like how we do with any other medicine.

Currently, patients in the medical marijuana scene must use iffy information combined with personal trial and error. There is no current database or other good way for medical marijuana providers and patients to share their experiences with each other. Because cannabis is illegal on a federal level in the US, there is very little reputable research that can be conducted on a large scale without the worry of legal trouble.

Example of medical marijuana from a California dispensary. You often don’t get much information about what you’re buying!

Example of "Gorilla Glue" medical marijuana from a dispensary in California

This is part of why it can be so much better to grow your own medical marijuana at home. You get to choose exactly what you want!

However, because of all the misinformation out there, when it comes to finding relief with medical marijuana it’s important to be realistic and manage expectations. If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Now let’s share what we do know about medical marijuana, including what makes it effective for some patients and not-so-effective for others.

Example of a "sea" of cannabis colas which have all been trained to grow the same height so all the buds are "top buds" and close to the grow light

What We Know About Cannabinoids

There are different components found in cannabis which cause different effects. Although some substances such as terpenes (aromatics/smells) have been shown to alter the mental and physical effects of buds, it is the cannabinoids found in cannabis flowers that are the subject of the most research and interest. Cannabinoids work on natural receptors in our brain, causing the majority of effects attributed to cannabis.

Here’s a very short list of common cannabis cannabinoids (say that three times fast!) that have medical interest for researchers and patients. There are dozens more, but these are the ones we know the most about.

THC vs CBD vs CBN

  • THC – responsible for many of the mental, anti-nausea, and possibly pain-relieving effects
  • CBD – great promise for the relief of anxiety, seizures, insomnia, and many other conditions
  • CBN – CBN levels rise as buds are allowed to go longer before harvest. It has a relaxing or body effect and is less psychoactive than THC.
  • Other Cannabinoids – There are dozens, even hundreds of cannabinoids that can be found in various strains of cannabis or hemp. Most of these are not well studied or may not even be officially identified yet!

Popular Conditions That May Get Relief From Medical Marijuana

  • Pain, Spasms, Nausea & Lack of Appetite – Often treated with high-THC strains. Results vary widely from patient to patient so it’s best to gauge results on a strain-by-strain basis.
  • Symptoms from Cancer Treatment – Many cancer patients have reported that cannabis gives them relief from the symptoms of chemotherapy. However, there is no concrete evidence that cannabis can cure cancer in humans. Please talk to your oncologist if you plan on using cannabis in conjunction with cancer treatment! Oncologists are some of the most sympathetic doctors when it comes to cannabis use.
  • Seizures / Epilepsy / Dravet Syndrome – I’m most familiar with these conditions because I have epilepsy as well as a niece with Dravet Syndrome. It’s insane how much incorrect information I see thrown around about medical marijuana when it comes to seizures. The truth is, some epilepsy patients report a reduction of symptoms when using high-CBD strains. Most of these patients are using medical marijuana in addition to their other prescriptions, not as a replacement. However, higher levels of THC can actually trigger seizures for some patients, and most strains available today are high-THC and low-CBD. That means that most types of cannabis have the potential to make seizure symptoms worse! Therefore it’s incredibly important for people suffering from seizures to know what they’re getting, and also to work closely with a neurologist when making any changes to their medication. I personally use both high-CBD and high-THC strains, but I continue to take my prescription as well. Learn more about seizures and the effects of medical cannabis.
  • Anxiety or Insomnia – Anxiety and sleeplessness are often addressed with high-CBD and medium-to-low-THC. For some people, high levels of THC can make anxiety worse, especially if trying cannabis in a new or unusual situation or when ingesting more than they’re used to. However, some patients get the most relief from high-THC strains. Note: Buds that are harvested too early or not dried and cured properly are more likely to cause anxiety, sleeplessness, and headaches for some people. Vaping & Edibles for Medical Marijuana

When it comes to medical marijuana, smoking isn’t the best option as it can irritate lungs and there’s a lot of evidence smoking isn’t good for you!

However, vaping (vaporizing your weed instead of burning it) or eating edibles (cannabis in edible form) are considered the “gold standard” way to take advantage of medical marijuana.

My Favorite Edible Resources

Medical marijuana is often ingested via edibles. Here is an example of making weed butter with cannabis to make edibles.

What’s the Difference Between “Hemp” and Weed?

Many people think of “hemp” as being a specific strain. Sort of like how there is “Sour Diesel” and “White Widow”. Others think hemp is closely related to cannabis but is a fundamentally different species of plant. Like peaches and plums.

Neither of those is true.

Hemp and cannabis are the same species of plant. So what exactly is hemp? Any strain of cannabis/marijuana that contains less than 0.3% THC (in the USA) is legally considered to be hemp. It’s not a strain, it’s a categorization. It’s like how there are many varieties of red roses. “Red” is a categorization, not the name of a specific variety of roses. Some countries have different upper legal limits for hemp such 0.2% and 0.5% THC, but the idea is the same.

Learn more about hemp laws in the USA on the FDA government website.

Is this hemp? It depends on whether a lab measures over or under 0.3% THC.

Critical Hog cola - grown in DWC

Let’s say I purchase “hemp” seeds and grow them out. Any plants that tests below 0.3% THC by dry weight is legally considered hemp. However, if one plant gets tested and is measured at 0.31% THC (on any part of the plant), that means it’s not legally hemp anymore. Even though it came from hemp seeds, and even though all the other plants from the same parents were legally hemp, this plant would be considered a narcotic because the THC percentage is over the legal limit.

Hemp is a category of cannabis, not a specific strain!

Cannabis plants love bright, direct sunlight

A major advantage of growing hemp over other types of cannabis is that it’s legal on the federal level in most parts of the world. While there is a lot of legal gray area surrounding high-THC cannabis, hemp farmers are rarely prosecuted in most places.

Because of the strict THC limitations, a huge part of the hemp industry is checking that plants stay under 0.3% THC (or whatever the local legal limit). Many hemp growers regularly test plants throughout the growing process so they can quickly toss any plants that test over the limit.

If you ever would like to grow hemp because it’s federally legal, it’s recommended you buy hemp seeds from a specialist to help ensure your plants don’t go over the THC limit. There are many strains of hemp that are rich in terpenes and cannabinoids, making them a great choice for people who want the greatest medical effects without any THC. If you do buy hemp seeds for personal use, make sure to get hemp seeds that were bred to have big fragrant high-CBD flowers, as opposed to strains of industrial hemp that are made to grow thick woody stalks and tend to grow small flowers that are not as medically useful.

It’s best to buy hemp seeds from a specialist

Example of viable cannabis seeds - even the pale one!

There are strains of cannabis that are extremely low in THC but don’t come with a THC guarantee. When a plant contains less than 1% THC, it may not legally be considered hemp but you likely won’t feel the effects of THC.

These strains are not legally hemp, but are extremely low in THC and won’t get you “high”:

Is Growing High-CBD Cannabis Different from Growing High-THC Strains?

How Long After I Switch to Medical Marijuana Can I Stop Taking My Prescription?

There are likely some people who may be able to stop taking their prescriptions and manage their symptoms purely with medical marijuana. These patients are featured in stories and articles about medical marijuana so it might give the impression that they are the majority.

But the truth is, in all my years speaking with various medical marijuana patients, I haven’t spoken to a single patient who was able to completely replace all of their prescription medications with medical marijuana. Several have been able to lower their dependency or dosage, but the patients I’ve talked to almost always use marijuana in addition to the prescription medication that they’ve been prescribed by their doctor.

Most Patients Use Cannabis in Addition to Their Prescription Medications, Not as a Replacement

Medical marijuana should not be used as a replacement for prescriptions from your doctor!

This doesn’t mean that cannabis won’t be effective at improving the quality of life for someone suffering from any one of a number of conditions. However, anyone trying cannabis for medicinal reasons should be aware that if you’re already taking medicine for a condition, cannabis will likely help you the most in conjunction with prescribed medication as opposed to replacing it.

Just as an example, you’ve probably seen some of the popular news stories about medical marijuana helping children with serious seizure conditions like Dravet Syndrome. While high-CBD cannabis is making massive improvements in their quality of life, many of these children are still taking prescription medications in addition to taking cannabis. The cannabis is simply used in addition to other medications to further reduce seizures and relieve symptoms that the medication wasn’t as effective at treating.

In some cases, patients are able to reduce the overall amount of medications they need to take, especially for medicines that are primarily used to reduce symptoms such as pain killers or opioids. As more research is done into cannabis, and new strains are developed, the options for relief will certainly increase. However, those thinking about trying cannabis for medicinal reasons should talk to their doctor, and go in with the expectation that cannabis will likely be an addition to your regimen, not a replacement.

Grow Tactics for Medical Marijuana

Strain is the most important aspect of growing cannabis plants when it comes to producing the effects you want! But there are a few tips and tricks.

How to Increase THC When Growing Weed

Medical marijuana plants growing inside a tent.

How to Increase CBD When Growing Weed

  • High-CBD Strain – Like THC, the most important aspect of producing high levels of CBD is to grow a high-CBD strain. Although clones are best because you know exactly what you’re getting, there are now high-CBD seeds available online for those who don’t have access to medical marijuana clones.
  • Autoflowering Strains – Auto-flowering strains can be a good choice because they are more closely related to wild hemp and often have higher levels of CBD than other types of cannabis. Although there are auto-flowering cannabis strains bred specifically for CBD, nearly all auto-flowers have at least 1-2% CBD (compared to less than 1% in most high-THC strains). This mitigates the effects of THC and makes you less likely to have racing thoughts or anxiety.

Growing Medical Marijuana for a Friend or Family Member

A lot of people write to us because they want to try growing a high-CBD or other medical marijuana strain for a sick friend or relative. It’s a very human, and very admirable trait to want to help people if we can, especially the people we love! Every time I hear from a concerned family member trying to do all they can, I think of how fortunate someone is to have a person in their life who cares so much.

I also feel a pang of sadness at how much of a task there is ahead is for someone thinking to jump into indoor growing without knowing what it entails. After deciding to try medical marijuana, often someone’s initial plan is to start a whole grow operation, get a high-CBD strain, grow it, prepare it and then hope it actually does something. As commendable as this quest is, there are many possible points of failure. Anyone who tries to do this could be setting themselves up for a lot of possible heartache!

I believe it’s very important to try to confirm that cannabis will even do something for you or your friend or family member before you set off on a 4-month journey to grow it yourself. Try to get your hands on some high-CBD weed and test out the effects before investing in a grow set up.

Unless you just love growing plants for the sake of it. I understand that. Cannabis really is one of the most fun and exciting plants to grow 🙂

  • Dinamed CBD Auto – A high-CBD (14%), low-THC(0.3-0.8%) autoflowering strain that was specifically developed to be relaxing. No psychoactive effects.
  • Euphoria CBD – This strain has about a 1:1 ratio of THC:CBD. That means the buds will get you “high” but not in an overwhelming way. It’s a soothing choice for someone with anxiety who wants some of the medicinal effects of THC (psychoactive effects, pain or nausea relief, etc.) while still reducing nerves.
  • Afghan Kush – This particular version of the popular strain is high-THC and feels very potent, but the mental effects tend to be calming and peaceful.

Seizures / Epilepsy / Dravet Syndrome – High CBD, Low THC

  • Medikit CBD – CBD at 20% or more, and THC under 1%. Developed specifically to be a therapeutic strain (hence the name). A mix between the legendary (clone-only) seizure-fighting Harlequin strain and a selection of high-CBD strains that originated in Central and South America.
  • Charlotte’s Angel CBD Auto – A high-THC (16%), low-CBD (0.7%) autoflowering version of the Charlotte’s Angel CBD strain (the autoflowering version seems better for seizures)
  • Purplediol CBD Auto – Another great medicinal autoflowering strain. CBD is around 17% and THC is around 0.5%. High yielding and quick to harvest. Gives a “chill” feeling but no psychoactive effects.

Pain – Significant THC, Varied CBD

  • Skunk Haze CBD – This prize-winning strain has a 1:1 ratio of THC:CBD. You will experience gentle mental effects that are not overpowering.
  • LA Confidential – This version of LA Confidential has won numerous awards. The effects are potent, psychedelic, and pain-fighting, but won’t weigh you down like many high-THC strains. Somehow energizing and relaxing at the same time.
  • Black Sugar – This very high-THC strain can help reduce pain and has powerful mental effects as well. Easy to grow!
  • Florida Lemons – Another mighty high-THC strain. Beautiful bud structure and a delightful lemon scent.
