Maybe density & potency are most important. Then go with a strain like Purple Ghost Candy.

Or perhaps the key to your heart is a pungent, memorable smell (like Mandarin Cookies V2).

Updates on the 2026 Farm Bill

“How will the new Farm bill for 2026 affect home growers? Is there a specific deadline for growers? I have seen many opinions, but have yet to find a straightforward answer to this question.” ~ Bob

Laws and regulations seem to be evolving every day. The reason no one can give you a straight answer is because no one knows for sure what will happen.

If you want my personal opinion, I suspect it will have a small effect in the short term, and a long term dampening effect.

Seed companies may try to work with lawmakers to find ways to ship seeds in compliance with the law. But unless the law is changed, fewer small breeders will participate. Some people are concerned that only the biggest companies with deep pockets for a legal team might be able to easily sell seeds and take payments.

That’s why home growers need to value cannabis genetics.

In other words, don’t panic. However, do take on a general preparedness mindset.

Happy growing,

Hey growers,

Looking for good cannabis genetics? We got you! We have run our recommended cannabis seed source page on GrowWeedEasy.com since we started the website in 2010.

GrowWeedEasy.com’s trusted seed sources list has helped home growers find seeds since 2010.

2026 best cannabis seed bank list on GrowWeedEasy.com (from Jan 2026)

If you don’t have cannabis seeds in hand, it can feel like it’s going to be hard to get them. Luckily, these days, you can get viable seeds of good strains sent to you almost anywhere. Today, we want to hear about your experiences ordering seeds online.

Back in 2010 when we started GWE, we’d only had good experiences with a single seedbank so far (the others had been mediocre-to-bad). So back then, the seed source list had only one option…

2010 GrowWeedEasy.com screenshot from Wayback Machine - we've been making cannabis home grow tutorials for over 15 years now!

Bonus: Check out the October 2010 version of the seeds page on the Wayback Machine! You can even click around to see the original version of the site 🙂

Our seeds page is not meant to be a comprehensive list of seed sources. Sirius and I are just a two-person team and can’t try every seed company. There are many, many outstanding cannabis seed sources not listed on our seeds page.

But what the page is, is the list of the seed banks we actually use ourselves to grow weed at home and document on the website.

Check out our recent autoflowering grow journal! The OG Kush Auto produced smooth, potent buds.

When we stop using a seed company ourselves, for whatever reason, we take it off the seed source page. Usually, they haven’t done anything wrong, just simply no longer carry strains we’re looking to grow with.

We believe it’s crucial to ensure every seed bank on the list is legit, and only stay if we continue to use it for our home grows.

Our seed bank testing is led by you: If we hear about a really great new company that everyone loves, we will test it out ourselves. Our goal isn’t just to grow great weed (though we do a lot of that too!), but also help home growers find exactly what they’re looking for.

GrowWeedEasy.com testing process for seed banks

  • Community feedback – If we keep hearing good things about a particular seed source, we know it’s time to give it a try.
  • Order seeds anonymously – We never tell them it’s us. I always order the seeds myself as if I were a regular customer. I feel like that’s way more likely to give the “authentic” experience.
  • Grow the seeds – Next, we actually grow the seeds from germination to harvest in a home grow environment.
  • Document the results – We take pictures and notes about each plant, including where we got the seeds, and share that information on GrowWeedEasy.com and through our newsletter.
  • Lab testing – When funding is available, we get the buds lab-tested, especially for side-by-side grow experiments with clones (like testing super soil vs coco or plant training methods like defoliation vs natural)

We also love, love, LOVE when you send us grow pictures, or tell about your experience with seed banks and their strains/seeds.

Our current cannabis seed source recommendations, as of January 2026.

  • ILGM (I Love Growing Marijuana) – California, United States
  • MSNL (Marijuana Seeds Netherlands) – Amsterdam seed bank with shipping centers in the US, Canada, and UK.
  • North Atlantic Seed Co. – Maine, United States
  • Seed Supreme – Florida, United States
  • Seedsman – Ships from US & Europe
  • Other – Did we miss anyone you like?

We encourage you to write us any time with specific cannabis seed bank feedback, including anecdotes, or just your overall thoughts or experiences buying cannabis seeds online where you live.

We’ll be considering everyone’s feedback as we go through 2026. And make sure to sign up to our newsletter to ensure you get insider information and updates about seed sources that we can’t post on the website. You can email GrowWeedEasy.com directly by responding to our weekly newsletter.

Every home cannabis grower knows that your strains make the difference between a ‘meh’ harvest and an amazing cannabis harvest that makes your eyes water with pride. At GrowWeedeasy.com, we are constantly growing, so we make sure to keep up with the latest developments when it comes to strains and strain breeders. That’s why I want to highlight a new strain breeder, Happy Valley Genetics, that offers stabilized seed versions of some of my favorite cannabis genetics that were previously only available as unstabilized crosses or clones.

Happy Valley Genetics is a new(ish) cannabis breeder.

Happy Valley Genetics - cannabis seeds powered by Ethos Genetics marijuana strains

Sometimes it’s hard to get information about new breeders, so I put together this page to share my research and experience with this breeder so far.

Happy Valley Genetics offers cannabis seeds that are stabilized and ideal for home growers.

Happy Valley Genetics produces stabilized versions of Ethos Genetics strains

Who is Ethos Genetics, and what do they have to do with Happy Valley Genetics?

Ethos Genetics is a Colorado-based company known for breeding high-quality cannabis seeds which I’ve been growing since around 2015. They offer great genetics, but the one downside (in my opinion) is they tend to release lots of “crosses” but don’t actually stabilize their strains. That means you could get 5 seeds of the same cross, and potentially produce 5 very different plants with different buds. This is amazing from the perspective of “phenotype hunting” and breeding your own strains. You get seeds of amazing genetics with lots of genetic variety to sift through.

However, for a home grower who isn’t planning on breeding seeds, it’s often more convenient to get a stabilized version of a strain when buying seeds. This makes planning a lot easier.

Advantage of using stabilized strains is you know…

  • Plant size – Be able to anticipate how big plants get
  • Time to harvest – How long they take before they are ready to harvest
  • Bud quality – Know how buds look/smell, potency, density, etc.

With a stabilized strain, you can grow 5 seeds and all 5 plants will grow the same as each other, almost as if you were growing clones.

Stabilized strains are usually better for home growers.

Planet of the Grapes cannabis strain by Ethos Genetics. Purple leaves, purple tinted buds, and tons of trichomes!

That brings me to Happy Valley Genetics. They are located out of Massachusetts and have been collaborating with Ethos Genetics for several years. During this collaboration, Happy Valley Genetics won two High Times Cannabis Cup awards: Best Sativa Flower for Super Lemon Haze and Best Hybrid Flower for White Wedding.

As part of my research on this breeder, I learned that Ethos and Happy Valley Genetics primarily breed with only female plants, stating that the Y chromosome from male plants does not necessarily contribute a lot to female bud development. This unique technique of cutting out male plants lets breeders always choose two “parent” plants that produce excellent buds, and is combined with testing plant genetics to get objective data instead of relying on anecdotal observations.

Happy Valley decided to start stabilizing the best versions of Ethos strains, and entered a formal licensing agreement. Now they offer stabilized strains, based on Ethos genetics, in both feminized photoperiod and feminized auto-flowering form.

Hey cannabis growers! We all know how annoying nutrient problems can be. And obviously, the best thing to do for your cannabis plant to prevent growing problems is give them the conditions they need to thrive. But did you know some strains are naturally more resilient than others? Certain genetics are less likely to experience problems. Yes, some special strains can experience sub-optimal conditions and still thrive.

Some cannabis strains make amazing buds even if you make some mistakes.

Some cannabis strains thrive even when things go wrong.

But which ones? These strains typically share some features…

  • Fast-Flowering Strains – Perhaps it’s because they just don’t get enough time to get sick, but fast-flowering plants are often ready to harvest before you start running into significant problems even in sub-optimal conditions.
  • Buds Grow as Nuggets, Not “Colas” – “Cola” is Spanish for tail, some growers use the word cola do describe a long fat bud. Sometimes these types of buds are called “baseball bats” (or in less polite company, “donkey d**ks”). These strains are high-yielding, but also prone to bud rot because they focus energy on producing long, fat colas. And for the purposes of today’s subject, tend to take out literally everything they can from the plant to their own detriment. These strains happily kill themselves to make buds. Which is kind of cool in its own way, but if you’re just looking to get a solid harvest with high bud quality, you’ll find the strains that tend to grow buds as small nuggets tend to thrive and stay healthy while their cola-wielding friends are sucking out every last nutrient as the plant slowly dies around the buds.
  • Stable, Established Strains – Strains that are well-bred to be predictable tend to be more resistant to problems than raw crosses or experimental strains. That’s because breeders often refine their best strains for years to ensure that every batch of seeds grows exactly the same – fast and healthy!
  • Legendary Strains – Some strains become legendary for a reason. Often, it’s because they just have something special to offer. Strains like Blue Dream, Girl Scout Cookies, Bruce Banner, and others were developed over years by home growers and commercial growers together. They’ve stuck around because they are all around great strains, and that’s also why you see they are some prominent in the history of so many new strains. Although not all versions of these legendary strains are great, I’ve found when you get them from a good breeder, they’re more likely to perform above-average than when you’re growing a strain you’ve never heard the name of. I love a strain name like “Candy Pegasus” as much as the next person, but you need to be more wary of brand new strains.
  • Direct-to-Grower Breeders – Strains from breeders that sell directly to customers are often a great choice. I think it’s because they’re also the ones answering questions when growers run into plant problems. The further removed the breeder is from the grower, the less they may be thinking about how plants grow, since breeders are usually growing in ideal conditions. These growers breed only for what the buds are like, and may not “stress test” their plants, unlike breeders who also consider growth patterns. Direct-to-growers breeders pay extra attention to ensure their strains tends to germinate quickly, efficiently use nutrients, grow fast, and never herm. For example, I have found the homegrown strains from Seed Supreme, Seedsman, and MSNL tend to be easy to germinate, fast-growing, and overall resistant to problems.

Looking for some specific recommendations? Let’s explore some hardy cannabis strains that can handle a challenge!

Blue Dream by DNA Genetics

Why It’s Resilient

  • Fast-Flowering – Ready to harvest with a 8-10 week flowering stage.
  • Stable, Established Strain – This version has been stabilized from the original clone-only strain over several years.
  • Legendary Strain – Blue Dream is the gift that keeps on giving. Every year there’s a new, even better Blue Dream. It has that special something that can only be accomplished by growers all over the world working together to develop a strain for years.
  • Direct-to-grower – Get is straight from DNA Genetics off their website.

Ideal For: Growers looking for a balanced high (strong yet extremely relaxing) with a forgiving growth cycle.

Get Blue Dream – Buds get tinges of purple with strong enough light

Get Blue Dream marijuana strain on Seed Supreme

Growing Blue Dream Tips

Ready to harvest with a 8-10 week flowering stage, this version is exceedingly easy to grow. Plants are just not picky. Responds well to training and can handle relatively higher levels of nutrients. Does well outdoors but really thrives indoors.

Girl Scout Cookies (GSC) by Seed Supreme

Why It’s Resilient

  • Fast-Flowering – Ready to harvest with a 8-10 week flowering stage. These buds won’t “go long” on you.
  • Stable, Established Strain – This version has been stabilized from the original clone-only strain over several years.
  • Legendary Strain – Anyone who’s been watching cannabis cups or visits dispensaries has probably seen this strain many times. There are sooooo many “Cookies” strains that have been developed from this strain as well. It’s legendary for a reason, and this refined version may have even better bud effects and sweet “cookies” smell than the original clone.

Ideal For: Those seeking a strong, euphoric effect, sweet-smelling buds, and a resilient growth profile.

Get Girl Scout Cookies – Famous for a reason!

Girl Scout Cookies is the cannabis strain that keeps on giving

Growing Girl Scout Cookies Tips

Easy to grow, easy to train. Can handle warmer temperatures than some other strains, which makes it a good choice if you’re struggling to control the heat in your grow room, or live in a very warm climate. Great yields even if you make some mistakes.

Honorable Mention: Platinum Cookies is a Cookies cross that has that special something. Check out my full Platinum Cookies strain review.

Purple Ghost Candy by Seedsman

Why It’s Resilient

  • Buds Grow as Nuggets – Chunky, dense nugs galore. Often grows with purple tinges all over the buds as long as you provide high levels of light.
  • Stable, Established Strain – This strain was a banger from the beginning, but has been refined over the last few years into a gold standard stabilized strain.
  • Direct-to-grower – Seedsman runs a full seed bank full of strains from many different breeders, but I’ve consistently found their in-house strains are just all around easy to grow with great germination rates and lower chances of problems.

Ideal For: Growers looking for a potent high and a sturdy plant with big yields. Best for growers with a bigger grow space. This plant needs room to stretch (either tall or wide). Performs great as a single plant as it tends to completely fill up the grow space available.

Get Purple Ghost Candy – One of my favorite strains lately!

Get Purple Ghost Candy cannabis seeds on Seedsman

Growing Purple Ghost Candy Tips

I’ve found this strains tends to grow big plants with huge yields, yet grows buds as nuggets so you don’t run into the same problems as other high-yield strains. Grows lots of side branches and responds very well to pruning, bending branches, and defoliation.

One of the reasons I chose this strain over the others I’ve grown from Seedsman is the outstanding bud quality. Buds tend to grow dense, beautiful, and POTENT. Make sure to wait until buds are totally mature before harvesting for the best bud quality. Not for the faint of heart or casual smokers!

Dirty Unicorn by Dirty Bird Genetics

Why It’s Resilient

  • Fast-Flowering – Typically ready to harvest in about 9 weeks from 12/12.
  • Buds Grow as Nuggets – Buds are dense and sparkly, and produce tight nugs.
  • Stable, Established Strain – Dirty Bird Genetics took a famous Thug Pug strain (Unicorn Poop – a non-feminized strain that is always sold out) and worked with it for over two years to make an amazingly consistent strain that gives you the wonders of the original genetics but in feminized, stabilized form.
  • Direct-to-grower – Get it straight from the breeders.

Ideal For: Those who want a clear-headed, energetic high with top-of-the-line bud appearance and smell.

Get Dirty Unicorn – Unusual name, memorable buds!

Get Dirty Unicorn marijauna seeds

Growing Unicorn Poop Tips

Plants tend to grow on the taller side, with extra space between nodes, but that actually makes it really easy to train this plant to grow into whatever shape you want. Vigorous, fast growth. The seeds germinate fast and seedlings tend to start strong.

Bruce Banner by Seed Supreme

Why It’s Resilient

  • Buds Grow as Nuggets – Dense, tight nugs galore!
  • Stable, Established Strain – Developed over years
  • Direct-to-grower – Get it straight from the source.

Ideal For: New growers, low-maintenance gardens, and those prone to minor nutrient mishaps. Offers a powerful, uplifting high.

Get Bruce Banner – Named after the Incredible Hulk for the sheet potency of buds

Get Bruce Banner on Seed Supreme

Growing Bruce Banner Tips

A robust strain that can take extra nutrients and warmer temperatures. Great yields, easy to grow, and overall just a pleasure of a plant.

Choosing the right cannabis strain can make a big difference. Hardy strains are known for their ability to thrive in less-than-perfect conditions, which makes them perfect if you’re looking for a consistent harvest with minimal issues. It can help when you opt for fast-flowering strains, those that grow buds as nuggets, stable and established genetics, legendary strains, and those from direct-to-grower breeders. Remember, the best cannabis strains are the ones that give you what you want, how you want it!

Happy growing!

If you’re just growing a few marijuana plants for personal use, it will cost you $20-$100+/month for electricity, depending on what grow lights (electricity) and nutrients you use. 3. Provide Right Nutrients (low Nitrogen in the flowering stage, and remember sometimes less is more!)
  4. Control Growing Environment (let the growing environment work for you)
  5. Harvest Plants Properly (most importantly, don’t harvest early!)
  6. Lastly, it’s important to remember that the strain has a major effect on yields!

“How can I grow weed privately?”

Read guide on growing weed indoors without anyone knowing. But remember the most important factors to stealth growing: “No tell, no smell, no sell.” Never tell anyone, not even your best friend, that you’re growing. Be on top of preventing smells, and never ever sell cannabis. Breaking one of those 3 principles is how 99% of growers get found out!

“What if my plants get sick?”

If you run into problems, our "diagnose your plant" tool with pictures will help you figure out what's wrong! The most common issue a grower runs into is a pH imbalance. Barring that, your marijuana plants likely either have a nutrient deficiency, heat or light stress, or are being attacked by some sort of marijuana mold, pest or bug. Whether you call it weed, cannabis, sinsemilla, skunk, pot, marijuana, or something else, the plant known as Cannabis Sativa is a hardy weed in the wild and can actually be easy to grow indoors at home when you know what to do.

Growing Medical Marijuana

“Medical marijuana” has become a household name. The body of evidence for medical marijuana in the treatment of cancer and other illnesses is growing every day. And for those who need medical marijuana, growing weed indoors is the perfect way to ensure a safe, regular supply of buds, for cheap.

We’ve written quite a bit about how mold and bud rot can infest your cannabis plants, but we thought it might be helpful to provide a list of some mold-resistant strains! Good genetics help protect weed plants from bud rot and other molds.

No more marijuana mold or bud rot!

No more mold or bud rot for your cannabis plants!

List of Mold-Resistant Cannabis Strains

Strains for Indoors

Although nothing can fix bad growing practices, some strains are more resilient towards mold than others. If you’re growing in a smaller space, or if you live in a part of the world that gets very humid, it can’t hurt to get a more mold-resistant strain!

Here are some strains that are mold-resistant and suitable for being grown indoors:

  • Purple Ghost Candy – This plant grew bigger than expected, but it was able to stay close to the super powerful LED grow light without any issues, so its bigness only increased the yields. This strain never seems to suffer from bud rot or mold, despite the big yields, even when it attacks other plants right next to it. The buds are also extremely potent. Highly recommended as a mold-resistant cannabis strain.

Purple Ghost Candy - This plant grew a big bigger than expected, but it was able to stay close to the grow light without any issues, so that only seemed to increase the yields. We've noticed that this strain will never get bud rot or mold even when other plants in the same condition suffer from bud rot. The buds are also extremely potent. Highly recommended as a strain.

  • Moby Dick – Easy to grow, mold-resistant, and potent. Smells a bit like peppermint but has also been described as having an old-school skunky flavor similar to popular sativa buds from the early 90s. Great yields, too!

Moby Dick cannabis cola - although buds get huge and dense, they've very mold resistant!

  • Sweet Tooth -This strain is a personal favorite. It has a sweet flavor/taste that is reminiscent of chocolate, and the effects are powerful. As a bonus, it is mold-resistant from its Hawaiian roots

The cannabis strain known as Sweet Tooth is becoming increasingly popular!

  • Glookies strain is resistant to mold and poor environmental conditions. This one survived excessive heat and high humidity to produce great yields with strong bud effects.

Other popular indoor mold-resistant strains:

  • Berry Bomb by Bomb Seeds
  • Chocolate Haze by Royal Queen Seeds
  • Chocolope x Kush
  • Crystal by Seed Supreme
  • Green Poison by Sweet Seeds
  • Gorilla Zkittlez by Barney’s Farm
  • Silver Bubble by Reserva Privada

Strains For Outdoors

Although definitely not foolproof, it can’t hurt to get a more mold-resistant strain if you live in a humid environment, or if you’re an outdoor grower who gets cool wet conditions early in the fall!

Here are some strains that are mold-resistant and suitable for being grown outdoors:

  • Blue Venom – A G13 Labs strain that is resistant to mold and produces beautiful bud quality.

  • Holland’s Hope – Designed specifically for outdoor growing (and not really suited to indoors), this strain is ready to harvest in late September or early October in the northern hemisphere. This strain has been bred for bud appearance, potency, yields, and overall weather resistance. Plants get 3-7 feet tall on average and produce a “knock-down” and “euphoric stone” effect that’s been honed for over three decades, with unique effects that are difficult to find with indoor strains. The buds are very mold-resistant and tend to get very fat. Buds often take on purple hues as they approach harvest.

  • Frisian Dew – A popular strain because about half of the plants grow buds that turn an incredible, vibrant purple (the other half of plants grow green buds but still beautiful and the effects are just as good). This strain tends to grow the most purple buds if plants in the flowering stage are exposed to very sunny weather with many hours of direct sunlight each day. Another way to help increase the overall amount of purple is to ensure plants get cool temperatures at night. Essentially, a big fluctuation in temperature between day and night enhances purpling. This strain is very well suited to outdoor growing, even in northern climates, and is especially resistant to mold.

Other popular outdoor mold-resistant strains:

  • Hindu Kush by Seed Supreme
  • Jack’s Dream by Greenhouse Seed Co.
  • Midnight Mass by Heavyweight Seeds
  • Midnight Kush by G13 Labs
  • Pineapple Express by G13 Labs
  • Thai Chi by Ace Seeds

Mold-Resistant Auto-Flowering Strains

The following auto-flowering strains are specifically listed as being mold-resistant. Learn more about autoflowering strains (auto-flowering plants automatically go from germination to harvest in 2-3 months).

  • Blueberry Kush Auto by Nirvana
  • Diesel Auto by G13 Labs
  • Glue Gelato Auto by Barney’s Farm

Are your indoor cannabis plants stressed out by the heat? Controlling heat in the grow room is one aspect of growing marijuana indoors that can be difficult for many of us growers. Grow lights provide our plants with lots of life-giving light, but they also get hot, and big grow lights (even some LEDs) can raise the temperature of a room by several degrees.

Quick Heat Stress Tip: Of course, the best thing you can do is control the heat. But if that’s not possible, sea kelp extract can help cannabis plants deal with heat and quickly recover from heat stress (use at 1 tsp/gallon).

Effective cannabis heat stress supplement - Bloom City sea kelp liquid extract

Each cannabis strain is a little different and some plants can handle hotter temperatures than others, but most plants start suffering from heat stress when their temperature gets over 85°F / 30°C.

Temperatures above 85°F / 30°C often causes problems, but if it’s not too severe plants may still grow slowly.

A little heat will cause some problems like leaf tacoing and discoloration, like you can see with this heat-stressed marijuana seedling

Some sensitive cannabis strains from cold climates (most often the short, squat, Indica strains with huge leaves) may start showing heat stress if the temperature rises above 80°F / 27°C. To avoid heat stress, you must keep your grow space below a particular plant’s comfort threshold.

Too much heat, especially over time, can greatly harm or even kill your cannabis plants.

The heat burn on this plant appeared overnight after a really hot day

But it’s not just plant growth that benefits from ideal temperatures. Controlling the temperature in the flowering stage has immense benefits to bud quality.

Buds that develop in a good environment reward you with increased density, terpene levels, and overall THC levels/potency.

Mint Jelly Auto buds with excellent bud quality from proper temperatures

On the flip side, too much heat harms bud development in the flowering stage by burning off smell/potency, discoloring buds, and causing buds to grow loose or airy.

Developing in heat can make buds look “ugly”.

Heat or light stress can cause a plant to keep making new growth on the parts of the buds that are closest to the light. When you see these top-heavy oddly-shaped “fist” buds, it’s usually the result of heat and/or light stress.

Example of heat and light stress - the extensive new growth at the top of the bud is caused by the grow light being too close!

What can you do to protect your cannabis plants from heat damage?

This tutorial will teach you tactics that you can use to control temperature and fix heat problems to produce a plant paradise. You also get tips to help your cannabis plants thrive even if the grow space is getting too hot.

This tutorial shows you how to deal with heat so you grow healthy plants with beautiful potent top-shelf buds.

1.) Supplements That Protect Against Heat Damage

Some supplements can help protect your cannabis plants so they are more resistant and/or recover more quickly from heat stress.

However, many different companies offer supplements and it can be confusing to decide which one – if any – is best for your garden.

Try to get supplements and nutrients from the same company

For the most part, there is no best supplement for heat (or anything really). A lot of different supplements will get you to the same place in the end. Because of that, when possible it’s a good idea to choose supplements made by the same company as your nutrients instead of trying to find the “best” supplement.

This is because during the process of creating a complete nutrient lineup, nutrient companies specifically test their supplements to make sure they work together with the nutrients in their lineup nutrients without causing lockout or other unexpected problems.

So if you’re using the General Hydroponics Flora Trio nutrients, for example, it’s much safer for your plants to add supplements by General Hydroponics if possible. If you were using Botanicare nutrients you’d look at the supplements that Botanicare carries, etc. Learn about different types of nutrients for growing cannabis.

Use supplements to help protect your plants from heat damage if temperatures are rising too high

This plant is getting spots and other discoloration of the leaves because it's in too-hot conditions.

Seaweed Kelp Extract

One of the best inoculants against heat stress is a surprising gift from the ocean; seaweed! As a bonus it contains small amounts of trace nutrients and minerals. Many different nutrient companies use seaweed kelp extract as part of their supplement lineup, which means you have a lot of choices to choose from if you want to incorporate seaweed into your grow.

A few companies offer seaweed extract by itself, like organic Bloom City Liquid Seaweed. Liquid Kelp is a lovely choice for those growing outdoors or in super soil as they contribute to a healthy soil web matrix. Suitable for soil growers who want to avoid using mineral-based nutrients, but can also be used in coco or hydro (just make sure it doesn’t clog any nozzles).

Pure sea kelp extract is a great organic heat stress supplement. Use at 1 tsp/gallon.

Effective cannabis heat stress supplement - Bloom City sea kelp liquid extract

If your nutrient company doesn’t offer a specific Sea Kelp product, you can almost always find sea kelp extract as an ingredient in one or many of their supplements. For example, General Hydroponics has a great all-in-one supplement called Floralicious Plus that contains several ingredients that work together to not only protect your plant against heat with seaweed extract, but can help it to produce better in other situations, too.

Or if you’re growing with Fox Farms nutrients, their Kelp Me Kelp You supplement not only has seaweed but also other ingredients that can make cannabis plants more hardy. So a great marijuana supplement for heat stress.

When starting out with supplements, it’s often best to start with something that matches your base nutrients and has sea kelp extract as an ingredient, like Floralicious Plus by General Hydroponics.

Silica Supplement

Supplementing your plants with extra silica (listed on the label of supplements as Potassium silicate) is not usually needed for healthy plant growth. There is almost always some amount of silica available, and plants don’t need a whole lot of silica to survive.

That means if your plants aren’t stricken with a (super rare) silica deficiency and are living in a great environment, adding extra silica might not give you tangible benefits. However, if your cannabis plants are under specific types of stress or are generally living in adverse conditions, extra silica can make life easier for your plant.

Silica (listed as Potassium silicate ) helps make plants more resistant to heat. Examples: General Hydroponics Armor Si and Dyna-Gro Pro-Tekt. It’s especially helpful to give extra Silica while your plants are still growing stems and leaves, as the silica gets incorporated into the cell walls.

The most popular silica supplement for marijuana plants may be Bloom City Silica Boost. (Use at 1 tsp/gallon, stop several weeks before harvest)

Most popular heat stress silica supplement for marijuana plants may be Bloom City Silica Blast

Plant roots with access to silica (Si) happily drink it up and the silica gets incorporated into plant cells, increasing the strength of individual cell walls. These “armored” cells help improve the hardiness, vigor, and structure of the plant. Kind of like sending your plants to the gym.

Benefits of Silica Supplements

  • Plants supplemented with silica are generally more resistant to heat or cold stress as well as some types of disease.
  • Silica increases the microscopic “abrasiveness” of leaves, which can act as a deterrent to pests and herbivores (like deer). In fact, if you’ve ever been given a paper cut by a piece of grass, you can thank silica for making those “sharp” edges.
  • Silica helps plants get the nutrients they need. Silica is effective at making phosphorus more available to the plant, which can be helpful in the flowering stage when the plant is going through phosphorus at a much higher rate due to the process of making buds.
  • Silica can also help the plant roots better absorb micronutrients (including boron, copper, iron, manganese and zinc) while making it harder for the plant to absorb certain toxic substances like aluminum and salt/sodium.

So again, silica won’t magically increase your plant growth, but it can help make up for some problems with the environment. Because of this, nearly all professional nutrient companies carry a quality silica supplement as part of their lineup.

I like Armor Si by General Hydroponics, but again that’s because they make my base nutrients. There is a silica supplement available from almost every major nutrient company out there and you’re least likely to run into problems if you go with the company that matches your nutrients.

Armor Si by General Hydroponics is an excellent silica supplement, especially if the rest of your nutrients are from General Hydroponics.

Armor Si is one of the best silica supplements to help protect cannabis against heat stress

Note: Silica supplements (or more specifically, their main ingredient Potassium silicate) will raise the pH of your water, so you may need to use a little bit extra PH Down. Learn more about pH.

Root Health Supplement (Essential for Hydroponic Growing in Heat)

Not only does heat bother your plants above ground, but the roots may also become diseased. When growing cannabis hydroponically (and to a lesser extent when growing in soil or coco) it’s very easy for your roots to start running into problems like root rot when the temperature starts getting too high.

Cannabis plants in hydroponic systems are prone to root rot if you don’t give them a root supplement. Especially if it’s hot!

Example of cannabis root rot - a common problem in hydro / DWC, but actually pretty straightforward to fix!Full Tutorial – How to Get Rid of Root Rot

The types of microorganisms that attack roots thrive in hot, wet conditions without much oxygen. Unfortunately, in hydroponics your water can’t hold as much dissolved oxygen when it’s hot, and dissolved oxygen is one of the best ways to fight off root disease.

So it’s sort of a double-whammy for plants grown hydroponically when it gets too hot in the grow room: they’re getting less oxygen AND becoming more vulnerable to root rot.

Besides using an air pump with large air stones to create lots of bubbles in your reservoir (learn more about growing cannabis hydroponically), the best thing you can do to keep roots healthy is control the heat.

Unfortunately, as you know, controlling the heat is often easier said than done.

There are some products that are made up of beneficial bacteria and other microorganisms that specifically fight root rot. These work by out-competing the bad microorganisms in your water reservoir and populating your reservoir with friendly ones that actually help your roots.

Drooping is often the first sign your plants are suffering from root rot

These two cannabis plants are wilty / drooping because they have root rot. Root rot can cause all sorts or problems and most commonly attacks your plants when it's too hot in the grow room.

Plants with root rot may also start getting what looks like various nutrient deficiencies, but the true cause is actually the unhealthy roots

A cannabis plant affected by root rot - leaves are turning brown, discolored, burnt white tips and edges, curlingA cannabis plant affected by root rot - leaves have spots, burnt yellow tips and edges, curling

My product of choice for fighting root rot is Hydroguard by Botanicare. Normally I only use nutrients and supplements by General Hydroponics but in my experience, this product has been the best for fighting root rot in DWC / hydro, so I use it specifically. I’m definitely not saying it’s the best root supplement out there, but it’s the best one I’ve ever used and I want to recommend something I know for sure will work. It doesn’t change the pH of the water, and it doesn’t interact with other supplements. I’ve seen it actually fight root rot directly, even when it’s hot, and I never go a grow without it.

I highly recommend Hydroguard as a root supplement for any hydroponic grower struggling with heat or root rot

Hydroguard by Botanicare is a Bacillus based root rot prevention supplement that works well to prevent root rot in a hydroponic cannabis reservoirs

I’ll be honest, I grow hydroponically in San Diego, and my grow room is too hot during the summer. I used to suffer from root rot but as long as I use 1 teaspoon per gallon of this supplement in my reservoir, I see white, healthy roots even in the heat.

I realize this isn’t a direct method to combat heat; rather, it’s a way to help deal with the consequences of too-high heat when it can’t be controlled. It’s best to control the heat in your grow area, but if that’s impossible Hydroguard will help keep your roots healthy in DWC / Hydro! It’s cheap and a little bit goes a long way. A 1-quart bottle will last you more than one grow!

2.) Environment Hacks

Add CO2 to the Air

Plants can easily survive in temps up to 95°F (35°C) when the air is being supplemented with extra CO2. However, for CO2 to make a difference to your plants, you need relatively strong grow lights (i.e. HPS, LEC, or big LEDs). But for those with strong grow lights, adding extra CO2 can result in faster growth as well as making it so plants can better handle the heat.

Learn how to add CO2 to your grow

Choose Soil or Coco (Hand-Watered Grow) Over DWC/Hydro

Growing cannabis hydroponically can give you some of the fastest growth rates of any style of growing, but as mentioned earlier, hydro does not really play well with hot temperatures because too much heat tends to trigger root problems and slower growth.

We talked about supplements that help prevent root rot for hydroponic plants, but the next step is to cut out the water reservoir altogether and go for a hand-watered grow. That’s because hand-watered plants are inherently much more resistant to high temperatures. Not only are the roots relatively safe from the heat (unlike in hydro) but the growing medium can hold a lot of oxygen no matter what the temperature (a lack of oxygen at the roots causes major problems in hydro).

Plants grown in containers or in the ground tend to be more resistant to heat compared to hydro.

These plants are grown in soil, which is more resistant to heat in general than when growing cannabis in hydro

Soil in regular containers is probably the most common way to grow cannabis indoors, and that combo works great.

But when it comes to growing in hot temps, coco coir may be a better choice than soil. In particular, coco coir inherently has properties and hormones that encourage healthy root growth and promote hardiness against heat.

Soil is a good choice, but coco coir is even better when it comes to heat.

Use Smart Pots or Air Pots (instead of hard-sided pots)

Choose a Smart Pot (fabric pot) or Air Pruning Pot (plastic pot covered in holes) to let air in and help cannabis plants with the heat. These pots help increase evaporation from the sides of the root ball, which not only reduces the chance of overwatering but also helps keep roots healthy and heat-resistant by providing plenty of oxygen from the sides.

Use Smart Pots (fabric pots) instead of regular containers as further protection against heat. These coco-grown plants were regularly exposed to temps that crept up over 85°F (30°C), and although that wasn’t ideal they made it to harvest just fine.

These cannabis plants were grown in coco in smart pots (fabric containers) and thrived even though they were regularly exposed to too-hot tempsAir pruning pots are plastic but have holes in the sides, which accomplishes the same thing as fabric pots (gets more air to the roots) and makes them more heat-resistant.

This "Blue Velvet" strain marijuana plant was grown in an air pot - check out those big cannabis yields!

Growing cannabis with coco coir in fabric pots is one of the best ways to grow if you want your plants to be able to resist the heat.

Keep Roots Cool

Your plant is much more resistant to heat if the roots don’t cook too, whether you’re growing in a pot or in a hydroponic reservoir. If you can find a way to help keep the roots around 70°F (21°C), your plant will suffer less and recover more quickly from a hot spell.

Watering your plant regularly when it’s hot will keep roots from drying out and help them stay cool. If the sides of the pots are getting hot from the grow light, put your potted plant inside a bigger pot (or find some other way to block the pot from direct light. This can help keep roots significantly cooler.

If the sides of pots are getting hot from the light, put the whole plant in a bigger pot to create an air gap and keep the roots out of direct light

Example of a cannabis plant in a pot, inside an even bigger container - to help keep marijuana roots cool!

Use Fan Placement to Reduce Electricity & Bring Down Temps

Air conditioners can easily control the heat in any room but they use a lot of electricity, which can get expensive really fast! Unfortunately, a lot of growers are using an AC (or just dealing with too much heat) when they could actually reconfigure their fans to be able to maintain the right temps without needing an AC at all.

Proper fan placement can also help save costs because if you use fans more effectively you can use less of them. A lot of fans can use a surprising amount of energy that can really add up over time. That means you don’t want to fill your grow space with tons of fans if you don’t need to.

Being smart about fan placement and investing in electrically efficient fans can save you a lot of money.

Exhaust Fans

The most effective way to control heat is to use an exhaust fan to vent hot air out of the grow space. Make sure your exhaust fan is set up to make sure you have the most cooling power. Here are some tips:

  • Grow space is mostly sealed – Your grow space should be mostly sealed for an effective exhaust system, with just ports for air to come in near the bottom of the grow space, and a port for your exhaust fan to blow air out from near the top of the grow space. I highly recommend getting a grow tent for smaller grows to make this super cheap and easy. A grow tent with a strong exhaust fan creates a breezy plant environment that may not even need many other fans. As an added bonus, a grow tent makes it easy to control smells with a carbon filter so no one can smell your plants even in the same room.
  • Strong exhaust fan – Your exhaust fan should be strong enough for the size of your space or tent. Avoid cheap ducting fans as they don’t move enough air to cool your grow light. Learn more about choosing the right exhaust fan.
  • Vent air from top of grow space – Heat rises to the top of your grow tent/area, so make sure your exhaust fan is located at the top of the tent pointing out.
  • Intake holes – You want holes to intake air, about 4x the size of your exhaust hole if possible. When the intake hole is too small it’s hard on your fan, the exhaust won’t be able to vent as much hot air. With grow tents, the intake ports are already built-in so you just leave them open so air can get through.
  • Input fresh, cool air – The intake hole should have direct access to cool, fresh air. The inside of the grow space is always going to be at least a few degrees above the temperature of the intake air, so if the intake air isn’t cool the grow space will be even hotter. Cool air stays lower to the ground, so make sure your intake ports are as close to the floor as possible.

Learn more about setting up exhaust system.

The most effective way to control heat is to use an exhaust fan to vent hot air out of the grow space. Make sure your exhaust fan is set up to make sure you have the most cooling power.

Ducting

Keep all ducting as straight and short as possible. You want a short direct line to the window so that hot air is immediately vented outside. Try to avoid using anything in the window that restricts airflow. Though it’s often necessary to use some type of screen to make sure no one can see in, try to do the best you can to obstruct airflow as little as possible. How can I set up an exhaust that looks normal from outside?

Try to keep any ducting as short and straight as possible.

Example of a cannabis exhaust system with an exhaust fan and ducting to vent heat out a window

Window Fan

It may seem simple, but a window fan can be surprisingly effective at venting some of the heat if the grow light is raising the overall temperature of your room. In some cases, a window fan can cool your room by several degrees, which can help keep your plants cool. I sometimes call this a “No-Ducting Exhaust” but honestly it’s more like a ‘poor man’s exhaust’ if this is the only thing you’re doing to vent out heat. But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t help,

If grow lights are raising the temperature of your room, a window fan can help vent heat and cool the room down by a few degrees

Get a window fan on Amazon.com to help control the heat in your room!

In order for a window fan to cool a room most effectively, there needs to be some sort of “intake” for cool air to get in. It’s like a bigger version of an exhaust system. A separate open window in the same room is perfect, though an open door can also help, especially if there’s an open window somewhere in the house. However, even in a completely closed room, a window fan can help keep temps down somewhat in the room because it helps vent out heat from the grow light. Although blowing air out is often the most effective, if the air outside is really cool sometimes it helps to blow air in. Experimentation is good.

Clip-On Fans

Small fans help ensure there is a gentle breeze around your plants and buds. This helps plants grow faster, helps buds develop more dense/tight, and reduces the chance of issues like white powdery mildew or bud rot.

Some specialty clip-on-fans are designed specifically to attach to the poles of a grow tent.

Cannabis airflow can be improved by a clip-on fan. This one comes with a way to attach directly to the poles of a grow tent.

Oscillating Fans

Oscillating fans are perfect for reducing “hot spots” that form in the grow space. Certain grow lights can cause major hot spots. If it’s most hot directly under the light, using fans to blow that heat away from your plants can make a huge difference in how much heat they experience.

In addition to oscillating fans, using a strong-enough exhaust fan with a big intake hole helps keep everything moving so hot spots don’t form. In fact, a smallish grow tent with a good exhaust fan may not even need extra fans because the exhaust fan itself will make the entire tent breezy.

Just be aware that adding oscillating fans doesn’t bring down the overall temperature in the tent. Fans only move air around. So if the entire grow space is already hot, adding more fans isn’t going to help.

Learn more about how to effectively set up oscillating fans in the grow room.

You can use small fans in the grow space to help break up any "hot spots" under the light

3.) Optimize Your Grow Light

There are several ways you can optimize your grow lights, up to and including upgrading to better ones.

Get the Right Size Grow Light (a smaller grow light doesn’t necessarily mean lower yields!)

Grow lights that are optimized for your size grow space tend to reduce problems with heat. Too much heat hurts yields by making plants grow poorly. On top of that, too much light (light stress) can prevent buds from fattening and make plants more sensitive to heat.  That means having the right size light for your space will help prevent the space from overheating. When buying a grow light, many manufacturers list which size space the particular grow light is optimized for (aka 2’x4′ or 4’x4′). Try to match the right size grow light to your space.

In some cases, getting a smaller light can actually increase yields, especially if the heat is out of control with your current light.

If you’re struggling with heat and plants are constantly heat stressed, consider stepping down the light. These plants grew better after the grower turned down the power.

A cannabis flowering room - multiple LED grow lights making too much heat

These plants were also getting way too hot. The grower started getting better yields when they took one of the LED panels out of the space.

Side note: I’ve found that older and “blurple” colored LED lights tend to put out far more heat than modern LED panels. Buds also don’t fatten as well under them.

Avoid blurple LEDs for growing weed!

Use an LED Grow Light

When it comes to heat control, LEDs are hands-down the best cannabis grow light. As of 2025, multiple newer LED grow lights have proven to be incredible at growing cannabis. These modern LEDs have been developed using real cannabis plants and live up to the LED hype, producing amazing yields and beautiful bud quality.

In my experience, nearly all newer LEDs run cooler per watt than other grow lights like HPS, or CMH/LEC.

On top of the fact that LEDs produce less heat compared to other lights, cannabis plants under LEDs typically can stand higher temperatures. So LEDs give you a light that puts off less heat and plants that can stand more heat. If heat is a concern, you want to go with LEDs.

Note: LEDs perform poorly in the cold. If you deal with cold in the grow space, HPS or CMH/LEC may be a better choice since they produce more heat and plants can stand cooler temperatures under them.

There are a lot of LEDs to choose from and the sheer number of options can be overwhelming. If you’re interested in getting your first LED and aren’t sure which one to get, Spider Farmer brand LEDs are a good mix of quality and price. They get a good rate of growth in the vegetative stage and better yields/bud quality than many LEDs in the same price range. I recommend avoiding generic LEDs (like you would buy from Alibaba) because they usually get hotter than expected for the wattage and often produce poor yields or bud quality.

The Spider Farmer SF-2000 LED grow light uses 200W of electricity and produces relatively little heat.

In my most recent grow, the Spider Farmer SF-2000 produced over 10 oz in a 2’x4′ grow tent, or over 1.5 grams/watt. The plants grew quickly and well. I got the buds lab tested and it produced more terpenes and THC than the other LEDs I tested at the same time. A great choice for under $200.

My friend used the Spider Farmer SF-1000 (100W and costs $90) in a 2’x2′ grow tent and produced several ounces. This light can be kept 8″ (20 cm) away or even closer for some plants, which makes it effective for small spaces.

Learn about other popular LED companies for growing cannabis.

Reduce Power

Many LEDs and other types of grow lights are “dimmable” which means they have different power settings that allow you to reduce the power of your light. For example, you might be able to set your grow light to 75% or 50% power. In these modes, your grow light will use less power and give off less light/heat. If there’s a heat wave coming up, it might be helpful to turn down the power until things cool down.

A dimmable ballast allows you to turn down the power on your grow lights

Raise Grow Lights

Raising your lights tends to help bring down the temperature experienced by the plants, especially with big fluorescent lights, CMH/LEC, and MH/HPS grow lights. Getting a lot of light can make plants more likely to suffer from heat, so another bonus of moving your lights further away can help them be more heat-resistant.

Note: If I need to raise my grow light higher than the normal hanger allows, I use zip ties to attach the grow light to the top of the tent. However, make sure to leave at least a little air gap so you don’t have a hot lamp touching the top surface of the tent directly (this can be a fire hazard).

Raise grow lights (if possible) when the plants are getting too hot to help reduce the heat they experience and especially reduce heat on developing buds. Sometimes a few inches can make a difference.

Learn more about how far away to keep grow lights from your plants.

4.) Change Your Light Schedule

Opt for 18/6 Light Schedule in the Vegetative Stage

Many growers give their plants 24 hours of light a day in the vegetative stage to produce the fastest growth. Yet turning the grow light off for several hours each day helps keep the temperature down, especially if lights go off during the hottest part of the day. The 18/6 light schedule is suitable for all plants in the vegetative stage, and for auto-flowering strains from seed to harvest.

Plug your grow light in an electrical timer to control the light schedule

Get an electrical timer to set your grow lights on a schedule

Side Note: Although plants do grow faster if they’re getting 24 hours of light a day, you get diminishing returns after 18 hours of light a day. Cannabis plants benefit from having a night stage, and that helps make up for the lack of extra light. The difference in growth between 18/6 and 24/0 isn’t very noticeable (the increase in growth may not justify the extra electricity and heat).

Learn more about cannabis light schedules here.

Set Your Dark Period for the Hottest Part of the Day

This is a super simple solution to help control the heat for growers who get high temperatures in the middle of the day. User your timer to set your “Off” time to happen during the hottest hours of the day and you’re done. As long as you make sure plants don’t get light during their dark period, they won’t realize their “day” is during your night.

5.) Start with a Heat-Resistant Strain

Some strains are inherently more resistant to heat than others. For example, strains that originated from the equatorial region, including many Sativa and Haze strains, can resist much higher temperatures than strains that originated in colder regions, such as many Indica strains.

  • Tall strains with thin leaves tend to be relatively heat-resistant
  • Short, bushy strains with fat leaves tend to be more sensitive to heat
  • Check the strain description to see if it mentions anything about temperature

Here are some strains that are heat resistant, easy to grow, and produce great effects.

Photoperiod (Traditional) Strains

White Widow

  • Legendary strain
  • Buds produce smooth relaxing effects that are great for enjoying with friends
  • Overall easy-to-grow and resistant to heat and mold
  • Has a surprisingly short flowering stage (8-9 weeks) for a Sativa-dominant strain, and doesn’t get too tall
  • Great yields even if you mess up a little
  • Get White Widow from Seed Supreme (ships from USA)

White Widow is a legend!

Purple Thai

  • Thrives in higher heat and humidity than most strains
  • Grows tall and stretchy so you need to train the plant to reduce the height (or it may grow into your light)
  • Pretty potent at 22% THC but still more of a “head high” (it may even be suitable for day use for high-tolerance people)
  • Get Purple Thai from Seed Supreme

Purple Thai laughs in the face of heat!

Afghan

  • In addition to doing well in the heat, this strain is overall easy-to-grow and resistant to pests and mold
  • Buds produce very heavy effects (a “brain melter”)
  • Great yields and bud quality
  • Get these Afghan genetics.

This Afghan plant thrived in burning hot temperatures during a heat wave.

Sour Diesel

  • Withstands heat and light better than most strains I’ve grown
  • Strong fast plants that tend to be stretchy/tall (not the best choice for small spaces)
  • Buds are consistently potent and high quality
  • Takes 12 weeks in the flowering stage but rewards with huge yields
  • Get these Sour Diesel genetics.

Sour Diesel is the plant on the left. It produced over 9 ounces on one plant.

Example of two manifolded cannabis plants with many colas - training makes a huge difference to yields!

This bud from that Sour Diesel plant grew within 8″ (20cm) of a 600W grow light in the middle of a heatwave. The plant on the right suffered tons of damage despite being further away. On the other hand, the Sour Diesel buds came out huge and potent with a little heat foxtailing on top buds that were closest to the grow light.

Sour Diesel: speaks for itself!

Auto-Flowering Strains

The Ruderalis hemp ancestor of all auto-flowering strains originated in the frigid cold climate of northern Siberia. These plant’s developed the auto-flowering trait so they could complete their whole life cycle during 2-month Arctic summer. Unlike photoperiod plants, these plants didn’t have the luxury to wait until the sun told them winter was coming. They had to complete their whole life as fast as possible. As a result of the cold climate of their ancestors, auto-flowering strains tend to be sensitive to heat. However, some breeders have bred out the trait by crossing with heat-tolerant strains. The following is an example of a heat-resistant auto-flowering strain that also produces great buds.

Amnesia Kush Auto

  • Gets a bit tall, but usually not too bad since it’s an autoflowering strain
  • Excellent “day” buds with a pleasant mental buzz

Many beginner cannabis growers struggle because they pick the wrong marijuana strain. After 16 years of teaching home growers, I recommend beginner-friendly cannabis strains like Blue Dream, Mandarin Cookies, or Purple Ghost Candy for reliable germination, healthier growth, better bud quality and bigger yields. Learn where to safely buy cannabis seeds online.

Blue Dream naturally grows long and fat buds, even for beginners.

Blue Dream cannabis cola - a beginner cannabis strain that's easy to grow with huge yields.

Recommended beginner strain #1: Blue Dream

This is my #1 beginner cannabis strain. This particular version of Blue Dream (the Seed Supreme version) took over 5 years of dedicated breeding, and has developed into a masterpiece that checks all the boxes.

The good:

  • Easy to grow – Reliable seed germination, and the resulting seedlings grow fast. Not picky about nutrients. Plants respond well to topping and bending. Can handle stronger light and higher temps than other strains.
  • Crazy yields – Even if left alone without any training, plants naturally make lots of branchy bud sites with enormous buds.
  • Lovely smell – Classic sweet “Blue Dream” odor (no funk or skunk). Could be a good “stealth” strain because it has an overall lighter smell.
  • Special potency – Smooth and lovely smoke that won’t put you to sleep, but you feel it. Get long-lasting and relaxing effects without being weighed down. Blue Dream is a legend for a reason.

Blue Dream – Fast, easy to grow, gets big. Huge yields. Indoors and Outdoors.

Watch out for:

  • Plants grow big & FAST – Plants grow faster than most other strains, so it can quickly overtake other plants in the grow space. Outdoor plants can overgrow a greenhouse or get taller than the fence. It can help to keep the plant in a 7-gallon pot (or smaller) to limit height.
  • Flowering Stretch – Plants grow 2-3x in size after you initiate 12/12, so make sure to initiate when plant is half the final height, and bend over any tall branches for the first 3-4 weeks after 12/12. You will be rewarded with a sea of colas.
  • Big bud problems – Buds get bigger and bigger for a surprisingly long time. After a while they can become susceptible to bud rot. Indoors, add a gentle oscillating fan blowing on buds if they get wider than two fingers.
  • May Need to Harvest Earlier – Watch out for bananas after 10 weeks or so. They may pop up via the “rhodelization” mechanism, which for this strain, is a sign the plant is done and buds are ready to harvest. Even if buds have lots of white hairs left, you may be surprised to find buds are solid underneath.

Recommended beginner strain #2: Purple Ghost Candy

I love this strain, which was developed by Seedsman over several years.

I have grown it multiple times, and every plant produced big, sparkly, dense buds. Plants and leaves usually turn purple, but buds only sometimes turn purple.

Very tall, forgiving plants, but they get HUGE quickly, so give them room just like the Blue Dream. In fact, this strain pairs really well with the Blue Dream because they can keep up with each other. Branchy  plants with lots of bud sites.

Note: Purple Ghost Candy produces VERY potent buds. Not for the first-time smoker. Lovely sweet smell, though much stronger than the Blue Dream.

Recommended beginner strain #3: Mandarin Cookies

Another personal favorite strain. It is one of the most popular Ethos Genetics strains since it first came out. Pungent sweet diesel smell, with strong hints of citrus and cookies. Buds are literally encrusted with sticky trichomes. Even the leaves close to buds are good enough to smoke. Extremely potent yet anti-anxiety, “chill” and happy effect. Perfect for relaxing after a hard day, enhancing creative pursuits, or just making a funny show funnier. Plants are easy to grow and produce great bud quality even if you make some mistakes.

When I first started growing cannabis, I was so excited to finally pick my own strains, but I was also very confused about marijuana strains.

Hopefully, learning about 3 different beginner-friendly strains has started to give you an idea of what makes each marijuana strain different.

These 5 different strains made wildly different buds. See the grow journal.

But you probably still have so many questions… What’s the difference between strains? Which strains are most potent, and what about yields? What other strains are great for beginner growers? Let me break it down.

Does strain actually matter? YES!

Cannabis strain effects:

  • Seed germination rates
  • How plants grow
  • How buds develop
  • Smell, potency, taste
  • And more!

Years of non-stop experimentation and breeding for positive traits has resulted in a superabundance of available strains. The sheer number of choices can be overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. In fact, it’s pretty fun to shop for cannabis strains when you start with a little bit of information. Choosing the best strain for you is rewarding.

Based on personal experience, I’ve put together a list of popular cannabis strains with exceptional genetics which makes them…well, just plain better to grow.

I’ll explain why I picked each strain so you can use the knowledge to further your own research and help you pick the ultimate strain for your next cannabis harvest!

Quick – Fastest Time to Harvest

For when the most important thing is getting to your next cannabis harvest as fast as possible!

When it comes to trying to get to harvest as quickly as possible, your best choice is often to grow an auto-flowering strain of cannabis. With an auto-flowering strain, you’ll have the option to harvest your plant 2-3 months from seed germination, and it’s typical to harvest 1-3 ounces off each plant. Under powerful grow lights with a big pot and with some room to grow, auto-flowering plants can produce 5-6 ounces per plant or even more.

Auto-flowering strains tend to stay small and grow fast, while still producing excellent yields and bud quality

Cannabis autoflowering strains tend to stay relatively small and grow quick with a fast harvest in 2-3 months

Although there are quick-flowering or “fast” photoperiod strains, they are rarely ready to harvest in less than 3 months from seed. That means you can usually get an even quicker harvest with auto-flowering seeds.

Auto-flowering seeds grow plants with some unique qualities:

  • Ready to harvest 2-3 months from seed – quickest time to harvest of any strain of cannabis (though there are some auto-flowering strains that have been bred to take longer and get bigger, most are ready to harvest in 3 months or less)
  • Autos don’t need special light periods – “Regular” (photoperiod) plants need 12 hours of darkness each day in order to make buds, while autos will make buds and be ready to harvest no matter what light schedule they receive. This can be helpful if you can’t avoid light leaks, or if you want to keep your lights on all the time (for example if you need your lights on to keep plants warm)
  • Relaxing effects from higher CBD – Many auto-flowering strains (though not all) have 1% CBD levels or higher from their Ruderalis ancestry. This can make buds more relaxing with more of an anti-anxiety effect, also reducing some of the inner “racing” mental effects some people get from cannabis. This means that auto-flowering strains can be a good choice for medical marijuana patients, or those who’d like to get extra relaxed from their buds. However, these days there are also some very high THC, low CBD auto-flowering strains which provide more of a psychedelic “in your head” experience, especially those that have been hybridized with Sativa and Haze strains.
  • Need your full attention first few weeks – Auto-flowering strains are generally pretty easy to grow, but you’re on a strict time schedule. During the first several weeks, it’s incredibly important you pay close attention to your plants and react quickly to any problems. If an auto-flowering plant runs into major problems during the first part of its life, you may end up with tiny plants and tiny yields because an auto-flowering plant stops growing bigger after about 6 weeks. However, when nurtured through the first few weeks, these strains can produce surprisingly high yields in a crazy short amount of time.
  • Crucial to pick a good auto-flowering breeder – the ancestor of all auto-flowering strains was a type of wild hemp with low levels of THC. As a result, the original auto-flowering strains were generally poor yielding and far less potent than photoperiod plants. Luckily, we now have dedicated breeders who put a lot of focus on breeding auto-flowering strains (Mephisto Genetics, Sweet Seeds, Nirvana, Seed Supreme & Dutch Passion are some famous auto-flowering breeders that cater to home growers, though many new breeders are appearing on the scene). As a result, modern auto strains have been carefully bred for many generations to be just as potent as their photoperiod counterparts. When you choose a good autoflowering strain, you’ll be very happy with your bud quality. Yet because there are poor genes out there, it’s important to avoid unscrupulous breeders and choose a trustworthy breeder to ensure you grow excellent genetics.

Here are 5 recommended auto-flowering strains for beginners (and connoisseurs!)

  • Quickest Time to Harvest – Green Crack Auto by Fast Buds – The breeder Fast Buds is known for producing stabilized autoflowering strains with extremely fast harvests. One thing I like about Fast Buds is you always get exactly what they tell you to expect in the strain details. Their Green Crack Auto strain is the result of generations of careful breeding. The resulting buds have a creative, energetic effect that also comes with a body “buzz” and is ready to harvest as soon as 2 months from seed germination. However, giving the plant an extra week or two before harvesting can dramatically increase your yields and bud potency. This strain produces dense chunky buds that look beautiful and have a lovely fruity skunky scent.

  • Most Forgiving Auto-Flowering Strains – Happy Valley Genetics produces extremely forgiving auto-flowering strains, especially Shortcut Auto and Easy Button Auto. These are the definition of easy-to-grow autoflowering strains. Shortcut stays short and small, while Easy Button grows to a medium size. But if you’re looking for a really fruity yet forgiving autoflowering strain, the crowd favorite is Pineapple Daddy Auto. All three strains are ready to harvest in under 70 days from germination, yet produce surprisingly big yields with bud potency above 20% THC.

  • Ultra-Potent Auto-Flowering Strain – MSNL produces some extremely high-THC auto-flowering strains, including their famous Kushberry Moonrocks Auto, which tests around 25% THC. However, MSNL’s most potent autoflowering strain is Permanent Marker Auto, with buds that shockingly test above 30% THC. I haven’t grown Permanent Marker Auto yet myself, but our readers have RAVED about it so I feel confident recommending it here. Ready to harvest at 70 days from germination, though an extra week or two maximizes yields and potency.

  • Medical Strain (Very Relaxing) – Black Jack Auto. This strain had some of the most chill effects of all the auto-flowering strains I’ve grown so far. I grew two Black Jack Autos at the same time. One was 7.5/10 in relaxation, but the other left me feeling on Cloud 9. Both had an immediate nose-tingling head effect, and then longer lasting pleasant mental and body effects. Great for relaxation, but didn’t weigh me down. The smell was pungent and skunky yet had sweet notes. This strain seemed to do better with somewhat lower levels of light, so it would be perfect to tuck one of these plants in the back or to the side of your main grow.

Easy – Forgiving and Easy to Grow

A happy marijuana seedling - sometimes it's more important for a strain to be easy that anything else. Who doesn't want tough cannabis plants? In order to get the best results with growing cannabis, you need to pay regular attention to your plants. However, that’s a lot easier said than done. Maybe you don’t have a lot of time, and you just want to do the “bare minimum” and still get to harvest. Although I highly encourage you to take great care of your plants, if this sounds like you, you may get the best results by choosing a hardy cannabis strain that’s been specifically bred to be easy to grow and can roll with the punches.

Although they’re generally hardy, in some ways, auto-flowering strains can be tough for a beginner because they don’t leave a lot of time for mistakes. If you mess up in the first 3-6 weeks, you can sometimes end up with a tiny plant and small yields at harvest and unfortunately there’s really nothing you can do about it at that point.

On the flip side, a photoperiod plant gives you as much time as you need to dial in your grow and make mistakes because it won’t start making buds until you “tell” it to. That gives you time to conduct experiments and/or really see what a plant can do.

They don’t say it grows like a weed for nothing! With a photoperiod cannabis plant, you can bring it to the brink of death and back, then continue on with your grow without much consequence.

For that reason, I highly recommend sticking with photoperiod (“standard”) strains if you’re specifically looking for a strain that’s particularly easy to grow and can bounce back from problems.

  • Low Odor – Northern Light is a hardy, potent strain that tends to have less of a smell than other strains, which can be helpful for stealth reasons. This strain is a classic that has won many awards for its effects. Northern Light plants tend to stay short, bounce back easily from problems, and are relatively quick to harvest. It’s one of the first strains I ever grew, and lived through a lot (heat, overwatering, dropping a light on it….). Despite all that mistreatment, the plant produced amazing results and yields.

Northern Light buds aren’t as smelly as many other strains of cannabis, and plants tend to be very forgiving and easy to grow.

The Northern Light strain by Nirvana is high-yielding, potent, and known to be very easy to grow

  • Quick-to-Harvest – Sour Lime Haze plants are a breeze to grow. Buds are ready to harvest 8 weeks after you initiate the flowering stage. That means with a 4 week vegetative stage you could have buds in hand under than 3 months from germination. Although a short-flowering photoperiod strain like Sour Lime Haze is not quite as fast as the fastest auto-flowering strain, it’s close and more forgiving if you mess up at the beginning!

Sour Lime Haze responds very well to stressful conditions.

  • Good for LEDs and Can Handle Tight Spaces – Pineapple Chunk plants respond well to LEDs by producing extra potent, extra sticky buds. This strain is also very hardy & resistant to many common plant problems (over watering, underwatering, stress…). It’s important to get a strain that can resist mold and diseases if you’re growing in the high humidity of a small grow space, which may not have enough air circulation for proper growth. This strain is overall just easy to grow and high yielding, and because of its effects, I always choose it if I see it available at a dispensary!

Pineapple Chunk is easy to train and produces well in tight spaces, like in this tiny 3′ (1 meter) tall grow tent.

Sometimes the most important thing is producing as much bud as possible!

  • Legendary Effects – Blue Dream by Seed Supreme – Incredible strain that makes huge, dense buds with a legendary dreamy effect and yields that can’t be beat.

Each Blue Dream plant can yield multiple ounces of weed. Some plants may turn purple.

  • Insane Potency – Purple Ghost Candy – This strain produces buds with 27%+ THC and higher with low levels of CBD, for a truly vivid, “in-your-head” Sativa-style trip. Plants can grow tall and lanky, producing very well both indoors and outdoors. Plants respond well to training and are easy to grow. You just need to be careful because these plants can get really big overnight and crowd out your grow space!

Special Potency, Famous Strains, & Cup Winners

Some of the most potent strains available today have won quite a few awards! Cup winners have an air of credibility around them that makes them really attractive and some strains are just straight-up legendary now.

  • Pungent – Sour Diesel – This plant is very stretchy which means it needs to be topped and trained to reward you with the highest yields. It has a Sativa background and you should expect it to double in size or more after the switch to the flowering stage unless you make sure to take time to continue bending and securing stems down so all the branches stay short. It comes from a warm climate and can handle very high temperatures and tends to grow slower in cooler temps. When well taken care of, it produces huge, long and thick colas. Its trichomes do not turn amber when the plant is mature, so this strain should be harvested when all the trichomes are milky white, as this is when the buds will have the highest levels of THC.

Sour Diesel makes long, spear-like buds.

  • Weirdly good – Jack Herer by Seedsman – Sometimes called the “champagne of strains”, Jack Herer is a world famous strain with buds that blend some of the best tropical Sativa genes for an “up” effect, combined with strong Indica genes to give it a heavy body effect. The best of both worlds. It has amazing resin production that extends from the buds to the leaves, producing valuable trim. It has only average yields and can be a little tough to grow, so it’s meant more for the connoisseur who just wants the best as opposed to growers who care about getting the highest yields possible.

Jack Herer offers unique and smooth mind/body effects.

Jack Herer is a famous cannabis strain good for both medical marijuana patients and those who just want to soar!

Bonus: Coffee Shop Weed – White Widow is the gift that keeps on giving. A true “legendary” strain, it continues to win Cannabis Cups and show up in coffee shops and dispensaries around the world, in part because of its ability to make you feel uplifted and happy. It’s known as White Widow because its buds become so covered in trichomes/glitter that buds can actually look white.

This plant is an example of "White Widow" - a legendary strain that's pretty easy to grow!

3 Top Dispensary Strains

I live in Southern California (San Diego) and when I go to dispensaries there are certain strains that show up over and over again. On the top shelf, consistently selling out. Because of that, I know from personal experience that these strains are proven to produce incredible buds no matter who grows them.I wanted to share my own personal “insider” list with you. Most of these strains are on the pricey side, though I believe they’re worth the cost.

  • Platinum Cookies – Years ago, a strain called “Girl Scout Cookies” appeared on the California market and exploded with popularity. The clone-only strain went on to receive several cannabis cup awards, and one of those cuts was developed into Platinum Cookies. Now it regularly appears on the top shelf of dispensaries, only to quickly sell out. Platinum Cookies seeds grow into huge yielding plants that take a few extra weeks for buds to mature. Your reward is outstandingly high potency (our last harvest of Platinum Cookies buds tested at 26% THC).

These two Platinum Cookies produced huge amounts of weed under a SF-2000 LED grow light

  • Gorilla Zkittlez – Gorilla Zkittlez is remarkable for several reasons. It gives the best of Gorilla Glue #4 and Zkittlez. It’s popular is this strain produces buds with particularly powerful effects that are often described as “couchlock,” “stoney” and ultra-relaxing. When I see this strain on the menu, I get it every time!

Gorilla Zkittlez buds produce outstanding effects

  • Jelly Donutz – A unique taste/smell is part of what make this particular strain so memorable alongside its spectacular effects, which have been described as “enormous”, “mind-blowing” and “energetic”. As a result, this strain and has won many awards including cannabis cups. It’s one of those strains where if I see it on a menu I know it will always be good, no matter who grew it.

L.A. Confidential is one of the best marijuana strains! It's legendary!

More Popular Dispensary Strains in 2025 in San Diego, Ca (where I live)

  • Cereal strains like Fruity Pebbles
  • Candy strains like Candy Games #38
  • Cherry strains like Cherry Gar-See-Ya R1
  • Permanent Marker (weirdly popular right now)
  • Wedding strains like Wedding Cake and White Wedding

Strains for Growing with LEDs

When it comes to growing cannabis with LED grow lights, photoperiod or auto-flowering strains are both suitable for growing with LEDs. You can make LEDs work with any strain. Just make sure to take good care of your plants and watch upper leaves for signs of light stress.

Good for Short Spaces, Mini Tents, and Grow Boxes

In a grow box it’s important to grow a cannabis strain that…

  • Naturally stays small/short – helpful when you don’t have a lot of extra space. Indica-hybrid strains are recommended because they tend to stay on the smaller side.
  • Resistant to heat – some strains are more resistant to high heat and lack of good air circulation. Ideal for a small space.
  • Resistant to mold – mold can happen from high humidity in a small grow space. Especially if it doesn’t provide enough fresh air and circulation for proper growth. “Cheese” strains and strains with Hawaiian ancestry tend to be more mold-resistant in general, but it’s also a strain-by-strain thing.
  • Can stand high levels of light – this helps because plants are normally kept very close to grow lights in a short space. Many Sativa and Haze strains tend to be more light loving, while Indica strains are more likely to suffer from light burn. However, Indica strains tend to grow short, which is helpful, so if possible you want to find a hybrid that has both traits.

Example of good strains for grow boxes

  • Peyote Critical – This strain can be a great candidate for a small space. It stays a manageable size, is ready to harvest quickly, and produces mold-resistant buds. It also has a relatively light smell that’s a little sweet and spicy, with less of a “cannabis” smell than many other strains. It produces a “couchlock” stone that’s heavy on body effects.

Peyote Critical is an easy-to-grow plant that stays relatively small.

  • Aurora Indica – Another strain that’s well-suited to micro grows in small spaces. Buds produce an initial mind effect that develops into a deeper “body stone.”

This is an Aurora Indica plant I grew. It stayed very short but buds were thick and dense.

Medical Marijuana Strains

When it comes to growing medical marijuana, the goal is usually to grow strains that are either very high in THC (psychoactive effects), high in CBD (relaxing effect), or high in both.

Mold can attack the cannabis growing in your grow tent or curing in your jars! Don't lose your harvest to this terrible foe to marijuana growers everywhere!

Mold. Most people who grow cannabis aren’t thinking about mold at all! But there are 3 main types of mold that often attack unsuspecting cannabis growers…

  • White Powdery Mildew
  • Bud Rot
  • Fuzzy White Mold (Regular Mold)

There’s so many other things besides mold to worry about during your grow, like nutrient deficiencies, plant training, bugs, increasing yields, increasing THC, etc.

But unfortunately, mold has a way of creeping into your life when you least expect it!

It’s possible to get mold at any point at any point in your plant’s life, but even if you make it through your entire grow without mold, the last 2 weeks before harvest (and the first few weeks after harvest) are actually the times when you’re most likely to get attacked!

This is extra frustrating because mold makes buds completely unsafe to smoke, and it most often gets you after you’ve already dedicated months and months of work into your grow. If you’re not careful mold can decimate your entire crop!

Yuck!!!!! NEVER smoke moldy buds! If buds look fuzzy white, brown, black or gray, don’t smoke them!

When you think it's even possible that your marijuana buds are moldy, it's best to listen to your instincts!

Even if you’ve had several successful grows, there may be things you’re accidentally doing which can increase your chances of mold. Certain strains are much more susceptible to mold throughout their lives, so good practices will go a long way to making sure mold never gets you no matter what strain you grow!

Luckily, mold is really easy to prevent, and you have a lot of tools to help you combat mold so you never have to worry about it again! If you cover your bases, you can prevent this gross affliction from ever ruining your crops!

Where does mold come from?

All mold comes from spores. But how do the spores get to your plants? They can get tracked in from anywhere at any time, and there’s always some amount of mold spores in the air pretty much everywhere you go. Although it is a really great idea to keep your grow room as sterile and clean as possible, it’s still possible for mold spores to get in no matter what you do.

In fact, NASA has recently started growing various plants in space, and they were shocked to find out that their flowers also started molding in too-humid conditions! Even NASA didn’t know that mold would be able to make it all the way to the International Space Station.

NASA has found that mold can sneak its way to the International Space Station and grow in space!

The point is that mold spores are probably already in your grow room or around your plants in tiny amounts, but luckily they just can’t grow without the right conditions. Since it’s easy to create an environment to prevent mold from ever taking hold of your plants, you can be sure that any spores will never “blossom” on your plants.

3 Times You Are Most Likely to See Mold

1.) When plants are big and leafy

White Powdery Mildew is a type of mold that attacks when your plants are growing in hot, humid conditions without a lot of airflow; WPM needs stagnant air to grow. It looks a little bit like someone dropped some flour on your leaves, buds or stems.

A marijuana plant that's been attacked by White Powdery Mildew (WPM)

WPM also grows on stems

White Powdery Mold can also attack stems and buds, not just leaves

A little WPM on your leaves is a bad sign, but if WPM gets out of control it can destroy buds and even kill a whole plant!

White Powdery Mold (WPM) doesn't just affect cannabis leaves, it can also attack and decimate buds!

Learn more about White Powdery Mildew

WPM can attack your plants and buds at any point in their life, even when they are small, but it’s most common when you have big leafy plants because they reduce airflow and increase humidity. This is most especially true in small spaces like a grow tent. The plant on the right is so leafy that no light is actually making it through the top of the plant. With so much vegetation in such a small space, you’re setting up a great place for WPM to strike, especially if it’s hot.

White Powdery mold most often attacks big leafy plants in small spaces

The more vegetation a plant has, the more water it is releasing into the air. Think about how much water you’re giving to your plants. A great deal of that water is ultimately ending up in the air. Since big plants drink a lot, they’re converting lots of water into high humidity levels. It’s the same reason why a rainforest is always humid and misty!

But big plants in small spaces also means there’s less airflow, possibly creating pockets of stagnant air, creating the perfect conditions for WPM to grow.

Smart fan placement will go a long way towards preventing WPM. WPM simply can’t grow in a breezy environment. If there is a slight breeze over all your leaves (all the leaves are rustling gently, but not waving around), not only are you preventing WPM, but as an added bonus your plants love it and will actually grow faster too!

Growing cannabis circulation diagram

But even with lots of fans, too-high humidity is your enemy. A good exhaust system with a strong exhaust fan will vent out all the hot, humid air to be replaced with cooler, drier air from outside the grow space. And with very leafy plants like above (where the entire middle and bottom half are not getting any light at all) a little bit of defoliation (removing leaves) can go a long way towards increasing airflow throughout the inside of the plant while reducing the humidity. And in a pinch, a dehumidifier can also be used to help keep humidity down.

The last thing you can do is make sure the temperature in your grow space never goes above 80°F (27°C) and especially not over 85°F (30°C) because that’s when WPM starts going crazy, and mold can cover a whole plant in just a few days!
2.) Late Flowering Stage

Within the last few weeks before harvest, buds become very susceptible to mold, both the white fuzzy kind and the dark brown or gray dusty kind. The bigger and denser your buds, the easier it is for mold to take hold.

An outdoor marijuana plant that has been attacked by bud rot

Mold can come in many gross colors, including white, yellow, brown, gray or almost sooty black

The type of mold that grows on the inside of cannabis buds can come in several colors, white, brown, gray or almost sooty black

It doesn’t matter what type of mold it is, the types of mold that attack buds from the inside all have the same basic effects and can be prevented by the same tactics. With inner bud mold (often just called “bud rot”) the outside of the bud may appear normal at first, but all the leaves will die suddenly. The bud itself will also become discolored soon after mold has taken hold.

All the other colas look healthy, what’s wrong with that single cola with yellow leaves?

One single cola with yellow leaves - a sign of bud rot!

Although lots of things can cause yellow leaves, it’s curious when only one cola is showing symptoms while all the other ones look healthy. It’s important to immediately investigate anything weird or new going on with your plants. Upon closer inspection, the bud still looks mostly normal from the outside, but what’s that?

A cannabis bud with bud rot. It still looks mostly okay on the outside (except the leaves) but there's a nasty surprise inside

When a cannabis plant has been hit by bud rot, it easily “opens up” at the spot to reveal the mold underneath. Any leaves touching the mold are loose and falling out.

Opening up the marijuana bud lets you see the mold growing inside.

If buds are attacked by bud rot, it’s a really good idea to immediately cut down and trash all the affected buds, then cut your losses and harvest the plant immediately. An entire bud can be taken over literally overnight, especially if another bud had mold because it means there are tons of spores in the tent. Don’t wait to flush your plants, don’t wait until the weekend, harvest your buds as soon as possible or you may wake up the next morning to find you’ve lost more buds!

3.) During Drying & Curing

Marijuana buds that grew mold during the curing process - this makes your buds unusable and you should NOT smoke themI know, it’s been a lot of work with harvesting and trimming, but don’t let your guard down during drying and curing. You have made it this far, you have put in this much work and time, don’t give up on your buds now!

How you dry and cure your buds is a huge part of what separates good bud from bad bud, and can completely change how it looks and tastes, as well as its potency and “smoothness.”

If I had to say what it’s been like in my experience, I’d say when it comes to quality, how you grow your bud makes up 50% of its final quality, 25% is strain, and the drying and curing process makes up the other 25%.

And in addition to increasing bud quality, drying and curing the right way prevents mold. The drying/curing process is a tricky time where it can be easy to create conditions where mold can grow overnight, so it’s not a good idea to skip steps. But the most important thing you can do is check on your buds regularly so that you can react quickly if there’s a problem!

How to Prevent Mold So It Never Happens to You!

  1. Indoors
  2. Outdoors

Preventing Mold Indoors

  • The best way to control humidity is to design your space right from the beginning. The most important thing when it comes to keeping humidity from getting too high is to set up an efficient exhaust system.

With every exhaust system, the idea is to vent out hot, humid or stale air, so it completely leaves the grow space

  • Set up fans inside the grow space making sure there’s air blowing both under and directly over your plants, preventing your undercarriage and fattest colas from ever sitting in stagnant air.
  • Be aware of overall plant mass and leaf mass, as every leaf on your plant is constantly adding more moisture to the air. The more leaves your plant has, the more water it drinks, and all that water is being released as vapor into your grow space!
  • Get a prominent temperature/humidity monitor and don’t forget to check it when you check your plants.

Get a Temperature/Humidity monitor for your cannabis plants on Amazon.com!

  • Inspect plants and especially fat buds regularly. If you see that leaves coming out of your buds are suddenly dying and curling in while the rest of the plant looks good, that is one major sign your buds might have mold.

More Tips:

  • If you get moldy buds, if at all possible try to harvest the whole plant ASAP. You already have mold spores in your space, and there were obviously good conditions for mold, so you want to save everything you can and possibly prevent more yield loss.
  • Don’t let your plants live in an environment that is too cool or too hot. Certain types of mold (like white powdery mildew) do better in hot, stagnant conditions at 80°F (27°C) and hotter. Most other types of mold (fuzzy white mold, bud rot, etc) grow best in cool conditions around 68°F (20°C). If possible, try to keep plants at a comfortable room temperature around 75°F (24°C) in situations where it’s humid.
  • Defoliation – You may possibly want to remove some leaves from your plants if your plants are extra big and leafy. If the bottom of your grow space isn’t getting any light, than chances are no air is getting through the plant either. In that case it can be a good idea to clean up extra leaves and buds towards the bottom of the plant. This also gives you a chance to remove buds that are sparse and not developing, so the plant can focus more energy to the top buds which actually get access to light. The less vegetative matter in the space, the better as far as reducing humidity. But it’s important not to over-defoliate your plant, as this can dramatically reduce your yields. Only defoliate a very leafy plant, and focus on removing leaves that either don’t get any light (towards the bottom and middle of the plant) as well as big fan leaves that are blocking a lot of bud sites from getting direct sunlight.Leaves power the growth of the plant, and in the second half of the flowering stage your plant won’t be growing any more leaves. So avoid stripping your plant during the time when it’s not growing new leaves and you’re still weeks from harvest. Removing too many leaves can reduce your yields and increase the chances of your buds getting discolored. That’s because leaves provide a certain amount of protection to your buds in that they’ll absorb damage first (like nutrient burn, light burn and deficiencies). When there aren’t any leaves, damage shows up on the buds first!

Sometimes you may need to remove leaves off your plant!

Mold-Resistant Cannabis Strains for Indoors

Although nothing can fix bad growing practices, some strains are more resilient towards mold than others. If you’re growing in a smaller space, or if you live in a part of the world that gets very humid, it can’t hurt to get a more mold-resistant strain!

Note: Strains with shorter flowering periods tend to be less likely to get mold since the buds don’t spend as much time in the flowering stage.

Here are some strains that are mold-resistant and suitable to being grown indoors:

  • Moby Dick – Very easy to grow, very mold resistant, VERY potent. Smells a bit like peppermint but has also been described as having an old-school skunky flavor similar to popular sativa buds from the early 90’s. Great yields, too!

Moby Dick cannabis cola - although buds get huge and dense, they've very mold resistant!

  • Sweet Tooth – In California where I live, this strain is very popular at dispensaries and often goes for very high prices! Well now you can grow it at home, too! It has a sweet flavor/taste that is reminiscent of chocolate, and the effects are powerful. As a bonus it is mold-resistant from its Hawaiian roots!

The cannabis strain known as Sweet Tooth is becoming increasingly popular!

Preventing Mold Outdoors

Shake wet or dewy plants in the morning, and especially after a rain if you can. Preventing the buds from staying wet goes a long way towards preventing mold or bud rot. Letting buds stay wet and dewy makes it a lot easier for bud mold to take hold!

Wet, dewy conditions make a great environment for cannabis bud rot to grow

Plant in breezy spot, with lots of sunlight. Preferably it should get direct sunlight in the morning to help dry off any dew or rain from the night.

This cannabis plant is living in a sunny, breezy spot

Although you are always at the mercy of nature, do the best you can to protect your plants from wet and cold. Cool, wet conditions are the time when mold is most likely to hit your buds. That’s why fall can be so dangerous – buds are fat and dense, making them a perfect home for mold.

If the weather is especially cool and wet, and especially if even one plant actually gets bud rot, harvest your buds immediately! If it’s happened to one it will usually spread to the others quickly. It’s better to harvest a little early than lose your whole harvest!

Mold-Resistant Cannabis Strains for Outdoors

Although definitely not foolproof, some strains are more resistant than others to mold. If you live in a humid environment, or if you’re an outdoor grower who gets cool wet conditions early in the fall, it can’t hurt to get a more mold-resistant strain!

Here are some strains that are mold-resistant and suitable to being grown outdoors

  • Frisian Dew – A popular strain because about half of the plants grow buds that turn an incredible, vibrant purple (the other half of plants grow green buds but still beautiful and the effects are just as good). This strain is very well suited to outdoor growing, even in northern climates, and is especially resistant to mold.

A Frisian Dew cannabis plant - all the buds have turned vibrant purple!

  • Jamaican Pearl – This fruity-smelling strain grows very well outdoors, and is not only mold resistant but it also has great yields. It’s known to produce a unique cerebral in-your-head effect that lasts a long time and won’t put you to sleep. Harvest Jamaican Pearl buds before the trichomes start turning amber for the best effects!

Interested in getting a best-of-the-best cannabis strain for your next grow? One of the best ways to ensure that you get great genetics is to start with a great breeder. This article shares some of the most famous and reputable cannabis breeders we’ve worked with.

This list considers...

  • Potency - THC & CBD content, plus does it have the described effects?

  • Bag Appeal - bud structure, color, density, smell

Want the best cannabis genetics? Get seeds from a trusted marijuana breeder so your next grow gets the best germination rates, yields, potency, and density. We recommend 18 cannabis breeders on this page, including Seed Supreme and Ethos Genetics. All breeders were picked based on home grow results with their seeds.

Where is it safe to buy cannabis seeds?

Learn about cannabis breeders from the US and Europe, then get a list of recommended strains with pictures.

    Recommended Breeders of American Genetics

    • Seed Supreme – They offer a variety of stabilized landrace, legendary, and ultra-trendy strains. One thing I like about them is they have a stable seed catalogue. Very few things in the cannabis world stay consistent over time, but this is one exception. You can order Blue Dream seeds today, then order the same seeds in a few years, and get essentially the same smell, potency, and germination rates as your first order.
    • Ethos Genetics – Mostly offers “crosses”, which means they breed two good cannabis plants together and sell the seeds without much stabilization or back-crossing. Even though they don’t offer particularly stable strains and their yields/results are variable, I have always grown good-to-amazing buds from Ethos seeds. For example, I’ve grown Mandarin Cookies seeds multiple times: some plants turned silver/lavender, others turned dark purple, but even when buds are not as expected, they’re always excellent. I included Ethos on the list for people who don’t care as much about consistency and want a fun surprise or like to hunt for new phenotypes using modern genetics with lots of variation. The good news is that lately they have finally started offering stabilized crossing of their most popular strains. For example, they recently released Mandarin Cookies V2, which is a stabilized version of the original.
    • Happy Valley – Initially a cannabis dispensary in Massachusetts, the people growing the weed started developing their own strains and winning cannabis cups. Now, Happy Valley Genetics serves their genetics as stabilized seeds to home growers. Their seeds have excellent germination rates and produce beautiful, vibrant plants. I was enthralled by the beautiful purple buds Candy Games #38 made in my last grow (see the grow journal).

The Platinum Cookies seeds I got from Seed Supreme grew amazing buds (see full strain review).

Platinum Cookies in Jar - beautiful purple buds!

Blue Dream was a joy to grow, with huge yields. Candy Games #38 grew buds that looked legendary (see grow journal).

    Recommended European Cannabis Breeders

These breeders have good reputations and stabilized genetics, which means their strain descriptions can be trusted. Although some of them do source some genetics from the USA, they primarily breed with genetics that made it to Europe years ago. Some of these genetics are difficult to find in the US and can offer unique or interesting effects compared to trendy American strains. European strains tend to be lower in THC (under 22%, though not always), which is great if you want more classic effects, but not the best choice if you want to feel overwhelmed by the bud effects. If you’re looking for “Face melting” strains, then I recommend sticking to the section of American breeders.

    • Barney’s Farm – Barney’s Farm has been selling seeds out of Amsterdam since 1992, and they regularly develop new genetics and refine their lineup. In my experience, strains can be hit or miss, but I included Barney’s Farm on the list because they offer some real winners. When I’ve grown these strains, I’ve been consistently impressed: Acapulco Gold, Ayahuasca Purple, Cookies Kush, Candy Games #38 (one of my favorite strains for daytime), LSD, Pineapple Chunk (best Pineapple strain) & Sweet Tooth.
    • BlimBurn Seeds – Specializes in stabilizing strains to capture classic strains, clone-only strains, and other hard-to-find genetics in seed form
    • Bomb Seeds – Sparkly strong buds
    • DNA Genetics (they used to breed seeds under the name Reserva Privada)
    • Royal Queen Seeds – delightful great-smelling buds

Pineapple Chunk is a quintessential European strain that continues to impress me. I grew it in 2012, then 2015, 2022, and recently again in early 2024. Every time the buds came out even better than the previous time. I personally think this may be Barney Farm’s best strain, and that explains why they keep refining it. This one was grown under a HLG 350W LED grow light and smelled like a mix of citrus with a hint of strawberry. Buds came out dense and sparkly.

Pineapple Chunk always produces easy-to-grow plants and delightful buds.

    Recommended Autoflower Breeders

Auto-flowering strains can’t be effectively cloned and maintained for years like photoperiod strains. As a result, autoflowers require somewhat different breeding protocols vs photoperiod strains. On top of that, old autoflower genetics produce weak plants with low potency buds. Therefore it’s extremely important to use a breeder that’s got a high-quality and current auto-flowering breeding program. Many breeders produce great autoflower strains (Barney’s Farm, etc.), but the following breeders stand out for consistency and potency. Click the name of the breeder to see a list of their currently available auto-flowering strains.

    • Bomb Seeds – Sparkly and potent buds
    • Buddha Seeds – Feel-good potency, great choice for growers who struggle with anxiety
    • DNA Genetics (previously Dinafem/Reserva Privada) – A bit pricey, but they are a great choice if you want to get photoperiod-looking bud quality with auto-flowering strains.
    • Dutch Passion – Excellent yields, classic effects
    • FastBuds – Fast and potent
    • Mephisto (auto-flowering only) – Some of the best auto-flowering strains. Their most popular strain is 3 Bears OG Auto, and they keep improving it.
    • Royal Queen Seeds – Buds always come out beautiful (they look just like the pictures) and smell great.
    • Seedsman – fast germination, auto-flowering plants grow fast and vigorous
    • Sweet Seeds – Spanish genetics with beautiful and colorful strains like Cream Caramel Auto
    • Victory Seeds – Dense high-quality buds that look and smell like photoperiod strains

Cinderella Jack Auto by Dutch Passion makes extra-potent, rock-hard buds with above-average yields. This little plant produced several ounces by itself.

    Recommended Cannabis Strains

Now that I’ve given some examples of recommended breeders, I wanted to share some examples of particular strains that my friends and I have grown over the years and recommend. These are all great for beginners unless otherwise noted, and produce excellent buds.

These strain recommendations are based on the following:

    • Potency – THC & CBD content, plus does it produce the described effects?

    • Bag Appeal – Bud structure, color, density, smell

    • Consistency – Do strains grow as the breeder claims? Do characteristics vary a lot from plant to plant of the same strain?

    • Ease of growing – General hardiness of strains

    • Reputation – Has this breeder earned an excellent reputation over the years?

    Girl Scout Cookies

Girl Scout Cookies is a famous clone-only strain from California that has spawned countless copycats and been incorporated into other famous strains like Platinum Cookies. Dedicated growers have captured the magic in seed form so growers can grow Girl Scout Cookies without having to find a clone.

This version of Girl Scout Cookies produces excellent buds. They don’t always turn purple, but cooler night temperatures towards the last 2 weeks of flowering can help bring out purpling.

    Purple Ghost Candy

I am a huge fan of Purple Ghost Candy. The bud effects are STRONG, but remind me of the unique psychedelic “day” (uplifting) effects of now-rare outdoor Sativa strains. You never see those old strains anymore because they get huge and need long hot summers in order to produce properly. Purple Ghost Candy gives you access to those bud effects yet is suitable to grow indoors. It still tends to grow tall and stretchy, but as long as you top the plants when they’re small (cut off the tops, which forces the plant to makes many buds instead of one), you can wrangle them indoors.

The right plant here is the 1st time we grew Purple Ghost Candy. As you can see it got a bit tall, which I’ve come to expect, but it was otherwise easy to grow and produced excellent yields. The Critical Kush on the other side was also a good plant, but the Purple Ghost Candy buds won when it came to potency, density, and smell.

    Dos Si Dos 33

For the fruity sweet lovers, Dos Si Dos 33 smells great and produces beautiful buds.

Example of Dos Si Dos 33 by Barney’s Farm (grown by Max)

    Critical Purple Kush

Easy-to-grow, strong but not overwhelming buds (won’t put you to sleep), and huge yields.

Both Critical Purple Kush plants produced a TON of weed (neither turned purple though).

Two Purple Critical Kush plants at harvest

    Amnesia

This strain lives up to its name. Amnesia buds are known for making you forget what you were just saying. Not necessarily the best choice for social situations (unless you all just want to chill) but perfect for relaxation at the end of a long day.

Example of an Amnesia plant I grew in a hydroponic setup

Original Amnesia cannabis plant under a 250W lightCloseup of Amnesia buds. Dense and chunky!

Start with great genetics to get great results!

    Moby Dick

Moby Dick is a whale of a strain. The bud effects let you swim through life with THC levels that can hit 27%. However, it also has a good amount of CBD (1%),  which means it’s much less likely to trigger a state of panic or anxiety (especially compared to high-THC strains that lack the calming gentle waves of CBD). Smoke a bud and sail through your mental stress into a state of relaxation.

Okay, that’s enough whale jokes, but seriously this is an excellent strain that’s easy to grow and produces high-quality buds. The one downside is it tends to get a bit tall, but as long as you bend and tie down any tall branches, it grows well indoors and rewards you with above-average yields.

Example of a Moby Dick cannabis bud cola. This marijuana strain is by Dinafem and tends to produce dense buds.

    Critical Mass CBD Autoflower

Speaking of CBD, some growers would like to maximize the amount of CBD but aren’t looking for a strain with a lot of mind-altering THC. Critical Mass CBD Auto is a great choice and comes in auto-flowering form, which means that it will automatically grow buds and be ready to harvest about 10 weeks from germination. A nice easy strain for someone who’s just getting started.

I’ll be adding more details about the recommended strains below soon 🙂

    Importance of Strain Names

While we’re talking about breeders and strains, I want to talk about an important topic that affects all of us…

Just 50 years ago, cannabis was considered one of the most immoral and destructive drugs in the world, putting it at the top of illegal drug lists in many countries. Many people still live with this attitude.

Cannabis growers have historically been locked up and put in prison for growing a simple plant

But in some ways, things have changed.

These days, people are generally more accepting of cannabis, and laws about marijuana are slowly being changed for the better in many places around the world, especially the US.

Silhouette of an outdoor cannabis plantBecause of better attitudes about cannabis around the world, we get…

    • Easier access to expert growing information, specialized equipment, and seeds
    • Fewer people are getting their lives ruined or going to prison because of a simple plant that’s more harmless than Tylenol
    • Medical patients are better able to get strains that offer relief for their specific symptoms
    • More people can get safe and reliable access to cannabis

But good things don’t come easily. We still have a long way to go, and the cannabis legalization movement highly scrutinized. The image we create now is going to set the tone for the rest of the world.

We are the face of the cannabis community. When people think about legalizing cannabis, they’re looking at our actions. As growers, every one of us has a responsibility to represent the growing community in a positive light.

Politicians around the world are trying to decide whether removing penalties for cannabis will have a positive effect. We are at a critical turning point, and it could go either way.

We’ve come to an important fork in the road

We've come to a fork in the road, which way will we go? Do we want cannabis legalization, or should we accept the status quo?

I believe that making cannabis legal and available to adults and medical patients is incredibly important. Whether someone uses cannabis for a medical condition or just because it helps them relax, I believe that everyone should have fair and equal access to this miraculous plant.

Yet with change comes responsibility. I believe that, as growers, we have a responsibility to present a good image to the public about growing cannabis. We must earn a better reputation to prove to the world that cannabis is not only a safe source of medicine but also that cannabis is less dangerous than cigarettes or alcohol. I believe adults and medical patients deserve the freedom to use this plant responsibly.

The world is watching us, and the way we act now is going to decide  whether cannabis ever gets fully legalized. That’s why I’m ashamed of some of the most popular strain names…

I am ashamed the cannabis growing community has popular strain names like…

    • Agent Orange
    • Cat Piss
    • Strawberry Dog Shit
    • Cheesy Dick
    • Donkey Dick
    • Purple Fuck
    • Dirty Girl
    • Stinky Pinky
    • P*ssy Juice

I know a lot of these strains have great genetics; in fact, some of them are award-winners!

But do these strain names bring to mind the image of peace-loving and laid-back growers and consumers which make up the majority of the cannabis community?

I believe we must improve our public image. I have chosen to no longer grow strains that carry an offensive name. Growers, I encourage you to do the same. Strain breeders, I’m begging you! Please be mindful of the cannabis movement when naming new strains.
