200W LED Grow Setup (For Hobby Growers)

This is one of the most forgiving grow lights I’ve ever used for growing cannabis. It stays cool, grows happy healthy plants, and produces great yields for only a little electricity. Cannabis plants under the SF-2000 seem to be more resistant to nutrient deficiencies and stress than many other LEDs. It is designed for a 2’x4’x5′ grow tent, which is a great size for the inside of a closet or corner of a bedroom.

  • Average Yields: 5-11 ounces
  • 3-4 months from seed to weed

The Spider Farmer SF-2000 LED grow light can produce up to 11 oz of weed.

Get the Spider Farmer SF-2000 LED grow light on Amazon ($300 as of June 2022)

Total Setup Cost: $555 ($600-695 with professional smell filtering and premium equipment)

Check out a cannabis grow journal featuring this setup.

Check out my grow journal where the SF-2000 LED grow light produced over 10 ounces with 3 plants in this setup.

Here were those cannabis plants at harvest.

Complete Grow Supply List

This cannabis grow room setup list includes all the supplies you need to grow from seed to harvest with a Spider Farmer SF-2000 LED grow light.

Spider Farmer SF-2000 LED grow light (200W)

Spider Farmer SF-2000

  • Simple to use and hang. Works exactly as you’d expect.
  • Light seems more gentle and less likely to cause nutrient deficiencies than many other LED grow lights
  • I’ve gotten excellent yields per watt with this particular grow light, especially for an LED in this price range
  • Doesn’t produce much heat or use much electricity

Cost: $260

Grow Tent (recommended sizes)

Just about any grow tent brand works great, but I’ve had good luck with the CoolGrows tents and they’re pretty reasonably priced. A grow tent is an easy and cheap way to instantly create a perfect cannabis grow space that can deal with water, light, heat, and smells. Learn more about grow tents.

Cost: $60

This 2’x4’x5′ Cool Grows tent (listed as 48″x24″x60″) is a good fit for the SF-2000 LED grow light.

Note: If you plan to get a bigger LED down the road, get a taller 2’x4’x6′ tent ($120).

6″ Exhaust Fan

An exhaust fan vents hot air and can be combined with a carbon filter to stop all smells from leaving the grow space. The 6″ size is more than enough for a 2’x4’x5′ grow tent. In fact, with some brands like Vivosun, the smaller 4″ version of their fan is enough.

  • Recommended:  6″ AC Infinity CLOUDLINE series of inline exhaust fans. These are quiet at top speed and completely silent at lower speeds.
  • Budget choice (Cheap but loud): 4″ Vivosun fan
    • The Vivosun 4″ Fan – 203 CFM is just as strong as the 6″ Cloudline fans but significantly smaller and cheaper. However, it is also significantly louder.

Cost: $60+ ($60-160)

The AC Infinity CLOUDLINE S6 6″ exhaust fan runs quieter than most others. It is silent on the lower settings.

(Optional) Carbon Filter – For smell filtering

When set up properly, a carbon filter removes 100% of odors but it must be attached to a good exhaust fan (like the AC Infinity above) to work. Learn more about controlling odors

Cost: $50-100

I’ve had great smell filtering with the above 6″ Cloudline fan attached to this Terrabloom 6″ carbon filter with 6″ ducting.

Plant Pots

I prefer fabric pots or air pots because cannabis plants grow faster when their roots get air from the sides. However, the extra air from the sides also means that fabric pots and air pots need to be watered more often than standard hard-sided plant pots for the same size plant. Both types work great for growing cannabis indoors. Often the best plant pot is whatever is cheap and easy for you to get.

  • Recommended: Fabric pots between 2-7 gallons (any fabric pots work great so I pick whatever is cheap or looks the best to me)

Cost: $20

These 3-gallon fabric pots work great in this setup

VIVOSUN 5-Pack 3 Gallon Plant Grow Bags Heavy Duty Thickened Nonwoven Fabric Pots with Handles

Grow Medium (Soil, Coco, Hydro)

Grow mediums can include coco coir or soil (hydroponics for more advanced growers) but if you’re not sure, a coco-based soil like Coco Loco is perfect for beginners.

Cost: ~$40

Coco Loco is a coco-based rich airy soil that cannabis plants thrive in

Nutrients

Many nutrient systems have a nutrient schedule so you give your plants the right ratios for each stage of life. Basically, you use a “vegetative” or all-purpose plant nutrient for the first part of your plant’s life and a “bloom” or low-nitrogen nutrients when buds are forming. Tip: Always start at half-strength with a new base nutrient system since the recommended amount can be too high for cannabis plants. Only move to full strength when plants are healthy and growing fast.

Recommended Nutrients: Dyna-Gro Grow + Bloom nutrient combo is excellent, cheap, and easy to use for growing cannabis indoors.

  • Dyna-Gro “Grow”: Give 1 tsp per gallon of water during the vegetative stage.
  • Dyna-Gro “Bloom”: Give 1 tsp/gallon of water after buds start forming.

Learn about other cannabis nutrients we recommend.

Cost: $25

Dyna-Gro Grow + Bloom is my recommended nutrient system for newbies. One bottle for veg, one bottle for after buds start forming. 1 tsp/gallon. Super simple!

Other Nice-to-Have Stuff

  • 24-Hour Timer (to put your grow lights on a timer so the plants get a day and night period on a schedule) – $10
  • Water containers (I personally use a 3-gallon or 5-gallon water jug to mix up nutrients, but anything can work) – Much cheaper at Wal-Mart ($5-15) than online!
  • Extra 1/8″ Rope Ratchets (sooooo handy) – These can be used to hang your grow light or carbon filter from inside the tent, and still be able to easily move it up and down without needing any strength. Your grow light usually comes with a set of rope ratchets, but it’s a great idea to get an extra set to hang the carbon filter – $10
  • Thermometer/Humidity Monitor with a probe so you can keep track of the temperature inside the tent. It can be nice to get two so you can measure the temperature in different parts of the tent. – $15
  • PH Test Kit – Prevent potential nutrient deficiencies by testing the water pH – $20
  • Measuring spoons for measuring out your nutrients (many people already have these) – $12

Learn about other cool growing tools.

Estimated Cost: $555-695 ($600-695 with professional smell filtering) plus the cost of seeds

  • Ultra budget (no smell filtering): $555
  • Only the necessary stuff + smell filtering: $600
  • Get everything including the premium equipment and optional extras: $695

My first grow with the SF-2000 in this setup produced these plants.

Some Cannabis Strains Can Handle the Heat

Every cannabis strain is different when it comes to temperature. Some strains of marijuana are easily stressed by heat, while other strains like Sour Diesel, Afghan, and Bruce Banner thrive in a hot environment.

Heat-sensitive plants often grow in a short and bushy way (though not always). Plants that can handle the heat tend to grow tall, stretchy, with thinner leaves.

Cannabis genetics that come from a cold climate tend to be more heat-sensitive, though many hybrids of these strains have been mixed with heat-resistant strains to make them more suitable for warmer climates. You can get a clue of a plant’s heritage from how it grows. It also helps to look at the breeder’s description to see if it mentions anything about heat.

More sensitive to heat (on average)

  • Autoflower strains tend to be relatively sensitive to heat since they originated in Siberia (though I included examples of heat-resistant autoflowering strains on the second half of the list)
  • Many Indica-leaning plants, which also come from cool climates, can be surprisingly sensitive to the heat.
  • I’ve noticed plants that tend to grow short, bushy, and wide with fat leaves (signs of indica heritage) are often more sensitive to heat

More resistant to heat (on average)

  • Sativa, Haze, African, Afghan, and Hawaiian strains tend to be more heat-resistant since they originate from hot climates.
  • Plants that tend to grow tall, thin, and stretchy with narrow leaves (signs of Sativa heritage) tend to be able to handle the heat, though they can get severely shocked by cold

Save your plants from the effects of heat stress!

The heat burn on this plant appeared overnight after a really hot day

Examples of Heat-Resistant Cannabis Strains

Afghan

  • In addition to doing well in the heat, this strain is overall easy-to-grow and resistant to pests and mold
  • Buds produce very heavy effects (a “brain melter”)
  • Great yields and bud quality

Get these Afghan genetics.

This Afghan plant survived burning hot temperatures during a heat wave

Aurora Indica

  • Tends to be very heat resistant even though it grows short and stout like an Indica
  • Sparkly, dense buds even if you make mistakes
  • Classic effects that bring you relaxation without overwhelm

Get these Aurora Indica genetics.

I’ve been pleased every time I’ve grown Aurora Indica. This one (on left in blue tub) thrived in the summer under an enormous 600W light even in a hydroponic setup (the plant on the right did not fare nearly as well in the heat)

Sour Diesel

  • Withstands heat and light better than most strains I’ve grown
  • Strong fast plants that tend to be stretchy/tall (not the best choice for small spaces)
  • Buds are consistently potent and high quality
  • Takes 12-13 weeks in the flowering stage but rewards with huge yields

Get these Sour Diesel genetics.

Sour Diesel is the plant on the left. It produced over 9 ounces on one plant.

Example of two manifolded cannabis plants with many colas - training makes a huge difference to yields!

This bud from that Sour Diesel plant grew within 8″ (20cm) of a 600W grow light in the middle of a heatwave. The plant on the right suffered tons of damage despite being further away. On the other hand, the Sour Diesel buds came out huge and potent with a little heat foxtailing on top buds that were closest to the hot light.

Sour Diesel: speaks for itself!

Special mentions for photoperiod strains

I have not grown these strains in heat personally, but they have come recommended from other growers for being heat-resistant.

Example of Gorilla Z buds

Pineapple Express Auto

  • An autoflower plant that’s ready to harvest about 70 days from germination
  • Buds are huge and dense with “feel good” effects
  • Legendary tropical smell

Auto Blackberry Kush

  • Beginner-friendly
  • Resistant to heat as well as plant stress in general
  • Incredible fruity smell
  • “Body stone” that keeps you glued to the couch

Get these Auto Blackberry Kush genetics.

THC Bomb Auto

  • An autoflower plant that’s ready to harvest about 75 days from germination in my experience
  • I’ve grown it several times, and it always turns out well (though they all grow a little different)
  • This strain experienced temperatures up to 89°F (32°C) during the middle of summer, and never skipped a beat
  • Very potent strain, and good yields

Get THC Bomb Auto seeds.

Examples of THC Bomb Auto at harvest

Auto Amnesia by Seedsman

  • Another heat-resistant autoflower plant
  • Ready to harvest about 11 weeks from germination
  • This strain has thrived in every condition I’ve grown it in, including some very hot days
  • Tends to be easy to grow and hardy
  • Beautiful buds, potency and overall bud quality

Try out these Auto Amnesia genetics.

Here are some examples of Auto Amnesia plants I’ve grown.

Auto Amnesia grown in a mini tent under a 100W LED grow light

Example of those buds after being dried and cured

Here are more Auto Amnesia plants. See the full grow journal.

Sour Diesel Auto (Seed Supreme version)

  • This auto-flowering strain tends to get tall and grow stretchy (so that brings it closer to the grow light) but even when it was extremely close it didn’t seem to get light-stressed like most other strains
  • I had one plant that grew almost next to the light and it just grew a big fat healthy bud

Get Sour Diesel Auto.

This Sour Diesel Auto grew enormously tall under a 300W LED grow light but was able to soak up all the light and grow huge buds (just like regular Sour Diesel)

Sour Diesel autoflowering cannabis plant grew close to lights

Special mentions for autoflower strains

I have not grown this strain personally, but it was recommended by a grower as being heat-resistant.

Diesel Autoflower

This huge bud was grown on a Sour Diesel plant that was heavily defoliated throughout its life.

“How much will electricity cost each month?”

If you’re just growing a few marijuana plants for personal use, it will cost you $20-$100+/month for electricity, depending on what grow lights (electricity) and nutrients you use. On average, I’d say a hobby-size grower might pay about $50/month to grow, but it depends greatly on your setup and local electricity costs! How much will electricity cost each month?

“How can I increase my marijuana yields?”

We have quite a few techniques to choose from or combine! See some of our most popular pages:

Even More Ways to Increase Cannabis Yields

  1. Increase Light Intensity (plus choose right light for desired yields & possibly add CO2)

  3. Provide Right Nutrients (low Nitrogen in the flowering stage, and remember sometimes less is more!)
  4. Control Growing Environment (let the growing environment work for you)
  5. Harvest Plants Properly (most importantly, don’t harvest early!)
  6. Lastly, it’s important to remember that the strain has a major effect on yields!

“How can I grow weed privately?”

Read guide on growing weed indoors without anyone knowing. But remember the most important factors to stealth growing: “No tell, no smell, no sell.” Never tell anyone, not even your best friend, that you’re growing. Be on top of preventing smells, and never ever sell cannabis. Breaking one of those 3 principles is how 99% of growers get found out!

“What if my plants get sick?”

If you run into problems, our "diagnose your plant" tool with pictures will help you figure out what's wrong! The most common issue a grower runs into is a pH imbalance. Barring that, your marijuana plants likely either have a nutrient deficiency, heat or light stress, or are being attacked by some sort of marijuana mold, pest or bug. Whether you call it weed, cannabis, sinsemilla, skunk, pot, marijuana, or something else, the plant known as Cannabis Sativa is a hardy weed in the wild and can actually be easy to grow indoors at home when you know what to do.

Growing Medical Marijuana

“Medical marijuana” has become a household name. The body of evidence for medical marijuana in the treatment of cancer and other illnesses is growing every day. And for those who need medical marijuana, growing weed indoors is the perfect way to ensure a safe, regular supply of buds, for cheap.

In fact, when you grow weed indoors for personal use, you often end up with way too much. The Grow Weed Easy website will teach you how to grow your own beautiful huge cannabis colas like this one! If you catch the growing bug like I did, and if you start enjoying the process of tending your cannabis garden just for the sake of gardening, you’re going to have to find a way to press, cook, freeze, and concentrate all your extra buds. 🙂

As you probably know, both medical marijuana and recreational cannabis have been decriminalized or legalized in many places around the world and weed is becoming legal in more places every day! Yet there still aren’t many simple indoor “how to grow weed” guides for beginners (even for those who legally grow, such as medical marijuana users and those who live in places where marijuana is legalized for personal use).

If so, I know how you feel. It can be hard to weed out all the bad information on the internet and find well-researched, free tips or instructions on how to grow your own cannabis. That’s why Grow Weed Easy.com aims to be a simple online resource that explains from start to finish what you need to do when growing cannabis so you can learn how to grow cannabis with great yields and potent buds, even if you only have a small grow space like a closet or even a computer case.

High temperatures can make growing cannabis a lot harder, even if you’re growing with heat-resistant strains. Droopiness, nutrient deficiencies, crispy brown leaves, and overall slow growth are common symptoms of heat stress, whether your plants are growing indoors or outdoors!

We already have tutorials on controlling heat indoors, circulation and exhaust, as well as how to help outdoor plants during a heatwave, but can a marijuana supplement boost the plant’s ability to survive and thrive in heat without changing anything else about the environment?

Actually…yes! There are 3 specific supplements that are known to help cannabis plants be more overall resistant to heat stress, drought, and high temperatures. Just water your cannabis plants with these all-natural supplements and it will help get them through those too-hot days.

Help your marijuana plants be more resistant to heat stress, unlike this poor baby!

Cannabis plants with crispy brown leaves after suffering from heat stress

1.) Seaweed Kelp Extract

There are numerous studies showing that seaweed kelp extract is beneficial for heat-stressed plants when used as a supplement. Seaweed kelp extract (available as a liquid or powder) has been shown to increase yields, growth rates, and heat resistance in plants experiencing environmental stress.

Kelp naturally contains lots of trace elements and minerals that have protective properties for plants. Studies have shown that supplementing with kelp can increase plant yields, growth rates, and heat/drought resistance for many species of plants.

Liquid Kelp for heat stress

Effective cannabis heat stress supplement - Bloom City sea kelp liquid extract

Kelp Powder for heat stress

Get Seaweed kelp extract as a soluble powder on Amazon so you can make your marijuana plants more resistant to heat!

Besides protecting against heat, kelp supplements may also enhance seed germination, increase uptake of plant nutrients, and give more overall resistance to frost and fungal diseases.

2.) Humic Acid Supplements

Humic acids are naturally found in the soil, but adding extra can be beneficial. Plant supplements for humic acid are usually derived from leonardite, a substance that is mined near the surface of lignite deposits (lignite is sedimentary rock that formed over millions of years from compressed peat). It is a waxy, brown substance.

Humic acids have protective abilities and can help cannabis plants deal with water stress and drought. Additionally, there is quite a bit of evidence (mostly with many different types of grass, but also with plants like soybeans and corn), that combining humic acid supplements with seaweed kelp extract actually increases the overall effectiveness of both supplements. They may have a synergistic relationship.

Not only do humic acid supplements help protect the plant against water stress, but they may also enhance the heat-resistance benefits of using sea kelp extract. Here’s an example of a liquid supplement that contains both Humic Acid and Kelp (though it’s much more expensive than getting them separately).

Humic acid comes in soluble powder form

Get Humic Acid on Amazon

Alternative: Kelp + Humic acid together

Get a product with both kelp and humic acid like this bottle. It’s mixed with water you’ll get less total humic acid and kelp compared to buying everything separately, but very convenient.

3.) Silica Supplements

Silica is not a “required” nutrient and your plant won’t suffer from Silica deficiencies. However, supplementing with extra silica offers additional support to plant cell walls. This helps your plants be more resistant to heat and other types of stress. This not only makes cannabis plants more resistant to heat, but it also helps prevent stems from bending or breaking when buds get big and heavy! Have you ever had your buds fall over from being too heavy? Silica can help!

Bloom City Silica Boost or General Hydroponics ArmorSi are examples of silica supplements made for plants.

Most popular heat stress silica supplement for marijuana plants may be Bloom City Silica BlastGet ArmorSi on Amazon.com to give plants a silica supplement that protects their cell walls!

Whenever possible, try to get a silica supplement from the same manufacturer that makes your base nutrients to help ensure everything works well together. Like if you’re using Bloom City nutrients, get Silica Boost. If you’re using General Hydroponics, get ArmorSi. However, sometimes that’s not possible. In that case, I recommend Silica Boost as it seems to “play well” with most nutrients.

Heat-Resistant Strains

Every strain is different. Some strains of marijuana are easily stressed by heat, while other strains would thrive in the exact same environment!

When it comes to strains that tend to be more resistant to heat stress…

  • Sativa, Haze, African and Hawaiian strains all tend to be more heat-resistant since they originate from hot climates.
  • In general, auto-flowering strains to be relatively sensitive to heat since they originated in Siberia, but some strains have been mixed with heat-resistant strains to make them more suitable for warmer climates.
  • Many Indica plants, which also come from cool climates, can be surprisingly sensitive to the heat.
  • Plants that grow tall and stretchy with narrow-finger leaves tend to be more resistant to heat
  • Plants that grow short and squat with big fat leaves tend to struggle more.

If you’re not sure which strain to get, check out some of the suggestions below!

Grow more heat-resistant plants by choosing the right seeds

  • In addition to doing well in the heat, this strain is overall easy-to-grow and resistant to pests and mold
  • Has a surprisingly short flowering stage (8-10 weeks) for a Sativa-dominant strain, and doesn’t get too tall
  • Buds produce psychedelic and cerebral effects that are typically not overwhelming and can be a good choice for improving creativity.
  • Get Tangerine Snow seeds

The Tangerine Snow strain thrives in the heat. I guess the snow helps keep it cool haha. This grow space experienced temperatures over 95°F (35°C) yet the plants didn’t seem fazed.

Orange Candy strain can handle hotter temperatures than some other strains

Northern Light (version by Royal Queen Seeds)

  • There are many versions of Northern Light, and all tend to be hardy strains
  • However, the version by RQS is particularly resistant to many problems, including heat. In fact, it thrives in heat.
  • Like all RQS strains, the smell and potency are delightful
  • Get Northern Light seeds (Royal Queen Seeds version)

These Northern Light buds lived through intense heat and a too-close grow light, yet the resulting buds seemed mostly unaffected

THC Bomb Auto

  • An auto-flowering plant that’s ready to harvest about 75 days from germination in my experience
  • I’ve grown it several times, and it always turns out well (though they all grow a little different)
  • This strain experienced temperatures up to 89 F during the middle of summer, and never skipped a beat
  • Very potent strain, and good yields
  • Get THC Bomb Auto seeds

Examples of THC Bomb Auto at harvest (this plant survived multiple heat waves)

Although the leaves turned yellow from the heat, the buds continued fattening and produced excellent quality
