Over a thousand of you sent in your real cannabis grow challenges in a recent survey. I read through them all. I noticed most problems actually come down to just a few specific patterns. Today, I’m starting a new series where each week I answer a few of the most common questions.

1.) How do I get consistent seed germination?

Struggles with germination are extremely common. Luckily, seed germination is easy to master once you find the right technique.

Turn seeds into fast-growing seedlings.

Example question

“Only a only handful of seeds have opened up while soaking, and none have sprouted. What do I do?”

First off, if you buy seeds that don’t germinate, contact the people who sold you seeds. Most reputable seed companies have a germination guarantee, which means they will replace seeds that don’t sprout.

That being said, certain cannabis strains sprout stronger than others. In some tests, these seeds germinated faster than average: Purple Haze, Northern Lights #10, Green Crack, Do-Si-Dos, Black Cat Kush

In a recent test, Purple Haze seeds achieved a 99.3% germination rate (142 out of 143 sprouted).

Second, try a different germination method.

Don’t keep doing the same thing over and over if it’s not working.

In this case, the grower mentioned soaking seeds, which typically means they either put seeds in a glass of water or used the “wet paper towel method”.

These are both excellent germination methods, but some growers struggle with them.

Solution: Plant Seed Directly in Soil

If you’ve struggled with multi-step germination methods, try one of the simplest. This works for most growers if you just follow the instructions exactly as stated.

1. Plant the seed directly in the soil or coco about a knuckle deep. See the picture below.
2. Cover seed loosely with soil. The seed shouldn’t get direct light until it sprouts. Add no more soil than necessary to accomplish that.
3. Give water, warmth, and light – Give 2 cups (500 mL) of water so the soil and seed stays moist even with the light on. Keep your grow light turned on for warmth, but not too close.
4. Don’t touch – Once a seed is in soil, don’t mess with it. If it starts to dry out from the grow light, very gently dribble a few more spoonfuls of water, but otherwise leave the seed undisturbed to do its thing.
5. Sprouts appear 1-3 days later on average, though certain strains and older seeds might take up to a week.

2.) Why do some seedlings grow slow at first?

Seedlings can feel so mysterious, but they’re actually simple things with simple needs. Give them a good environment plus a little bit of water, and they’re happy.

Example Question

“I use organic living soil (mild not hot) and organic bottled nutrients. I always see really slow growth during weeks 1 through 4 🤔 What can I do for faster seedling growth.

Slow growing seedlings in good soil are usually caused by one of these 3 things.

• Too Much Water <– Probably This – Watering too much or too often is the #1 cause of slow-growing cannabis seedlings. Underwatering makes similar symptoms, but is less common.
• Hot or Cold – Temperature should be between 70-85°F (20-30°C) for happy seedlings.If the grow space gets too hot or too cool on a regular basis, plants tend to grow slower.
• Light Starvation – If a seedling grows tall and stringy without many leaves, it needs more light. Either increase the light intensity or number of hours of light per day.

Solution: Keep cannabis plants warm and breezy under a proven LED grow light the recommended distance away (or sunlight).

Insider Tip: If the pot feels heavy, give less water.

For the first week after germination, give seedlings just 2 cups (500 mL) of water every few days. For the second week, give just 3 cups (750 mL) of water every few days. Raise the amount as they get bigger.

With good watering and environment, 3-week-old cannabis seedlings should be about this size.

3.) Do autoflowers need special nutrients?

Many of the questions we received involved autoflowers, including what nutrients to give them so they start fast and grow big.

Example Question:

Can you give autoflowers organic nutrients like you would do a photoperiod plant? I have good soil, which has some nutrients, but I want maximum growth. I heard to give autoflowers very small amounts of nutrients during the first few weeks.

Can you give autoflowers regular cannabis nutrients? Yes, when it comes to nutrients you can treat autoflowers essentially like photoperiod plants.

• Vegetative Stage – Give “vegetative” or “all purpose” nutrients until buds start forming. Example: FloraNova Grow or Pure Blend Pro Grow
• Flowering Stage – Once you see fluffy white buds, switch to “flowering” or “bloom” nutrients until harvest. Example: FloraNova Bloom or Pure Blend Pro Bloom (Soil Only)

4.) Why did my cannabis plants look healthy but grow airy buds?

If your plant is looking healthy, but buds still aren’t as dense, it’s usually one of four things: light intensity, bud spacing at top of plants, genetics/seeds, or the flowering environment.

Example Question: 

• “My plants looked healthy and green, but the buds weren’t as dense as I wanted. I used nutrients, kept the pH at the recommended 6.1 pH in coco, and grew under 400W of LED light in a 4×4 tent with 6 plants. Is bud density more about nutrients, light, plant crowding, or something else?”

Why are my bud airy?

How do I make them grow dense?

It is unlikely that nutrients or pH are the problem because your plants are healthy.

Light Intensity or Quality

When buds are not getting dense, the most common cause is too-weak or poor-quality grow light.

A great 400W LED can make dense buds; however, a mediocre 400W fixture may not get the same density even if you use it properly. Here are some recommended LED grow lights for cannabis.

For a 4×4 grow tent, in general, 400W is an acceptable but relatively low amount of light power for cannabis plants, especially if the entire tent is filled with buds from end to end. For a 4×4 ideally you’d like a total of 450-600W to get the best density from corner to corner.

Bud Spacing at Top of Plants

You mentioned crowding. It’s not the number of plants that matters as much as the number of bud sites located in the top canopy. No matter what you do, the densest buds are always going to be the ones at the top of the plant.

Six plants can do great in a 4×4 if you keep the canopy wide and flat before you initiate flowering, ensuring you get a lot of bud sites spread out in a flat line.

Spread out plants as they grow. Each “star” from above becomes a main bud site.

With wide, flat plants, you get a “sea” of dense buds.

With canopy management, bud density suffers if you have lots of inner or lower buds, or an uneven height so only a few buds are located at the top.

Genetics

Some strains or individual plants make fluffier or more airy buds even in the best conditions. So it’s really important that you get the right genetics to create the buds that you want. Especially if you’re chasing density, the number one step is to get genetics and seeds that will produce plants that consistently make dense buds. With some strains, you’ll get dense buds even in sub-par conditions.

Flowering Environment

While buds are developing, your flowering environment matters. Things like high heat, high humidity, weak airflow can all reduce the quality of buds. Not just density, but also prevent them from reaching max THC and smell.

Buds like it not too hot, not too humid.

Ideal budding environment is around 70-80°F (20-26°C) and 50% RH.

Luckily, this is an easy one. If you set up your grow tent right the first time, heat and humidity should be taken care of already.

Last week we talked about avoiding lots of the most common beginner mistakes when growing weed at home. Today I wanted to talk about how to save money on equipment, which can sometimes be the most expensive mistake.

The truth is you don’t need a crazy setup or exotic nutrients, you just need to ensure what you get is suitable for growing cannabis.

This is all you need to get to a top-shelf home cannabis harvest…

1.) Cannabis Seeds

Your seeds determine 50% or more of your results, so don’t choose lightly.

If price is the biggest barrier, this $5 seed menu by NASC has a limited rotating selection of top-quality genetics. If you’re looking to get good seeds for cheap, this is a great option. Here are my favorite cannabis strains for beginners.

The seeds decide what buds look, smell, and smoke like.

2.) Bright, Direct Light

Light is food for cannabis plants, and they need a lot of light to produce big, potent, sparkly buds.

In general, more light equals more bud.

Outdoors, cannabis plants should be getting 6+ hours of strong, direct sunlight per day.

Lots of light + room to grow (this is an 11 lb harvest)

Note: There’s still time to grow outdoors this year.

Indoors, a strong grow light is needed to get significant yields.

For most indoor home growers, a LED grow light specifically made to grow cannabis plants is your best light option.

LEDs are easy to use, electrically efficient and don’t produce much heat. Even a small 100W LED can consistently grow high-quality, dense cannabis buds when kept the right distance away.

What about yields? When it comes to cannabis-specific LEDs, the wattage is a very good indicator of how much light it’s going to make.

That means higher-wattage grow lights increase the maximum yields you can expect.

100W cannabis harvest (this is 3.1 oz) – Full 2’x2′ setup ~$290.

3.) Grow Medium (Soil, Coco, Hydro)

Soil or Coco is easiest for beginners since you can just plant a seed. Soil looks darker and has some nutrients, which lasts plants a few weeks. However, plants in soil grow a little slower and may be more prone to bugs.

Outdoor growers love soil: For cannabis growers powered by the sun, a recent outdoor cannabis grow study found the most successful outdoor growers typically grow in soil.

Grow weed in soil – nutrients last a few weeks

Coco is made out of ground coconut husks. Coco contains no nutrition, which means you need to add nutrients in the water from the beginning or plants won’t grow.

The pros are slightly faster growth, less prone to overwatering, and more resistant to some pests.

Serious beginners can succeed at hydro on their first grow, too (that’s how my husband Sirius started growing weed). You just need to follow good instructions when establishing your seedlings so their roots grow healthy and strong. After cannabis plants are established, hydroponic maintenance may actually be easier than soil or coco.

4.) Cannabis Nutrients (Add to the Water)

Cannabis plants use a lot more nutrients than most houseplants and need a good source of nutrients (fertilizer).

During the crucial budding phase, buds won’t get as big as they could if they run out of nutrients during the flowering stage.

For most cannabis growers, adding extra nutrients in the water increases harvest results vs not adding nutrients.

• Regular soil contains some nutrients, but cannabis plants often quickly deplete the soil.
• Coco and hydro don’t contain any nutrients, so you must add nutrients to the water.

That means using a proven cannabis nutrient system is an easy way to maximize your results.

I use the General Hydroponics Flora trio. Fast growth, big buds, smooth smoke. Use at half-strength what it says on the bottle. If you want something simpler, the FloraNova duo uses just one bottle per stage.

5.) Make Watering Easy

You should have a source of water close to your plants, because giving water regularly is your main job after getting everything set up. If you’re giving nutrients, you add it to the water before giving it to plants.

Follow a proven watering schedule for cannabis seedlings and make it easy to catch and remove runoff water. Established plants need to be watered every few days unless you provide extra water automatically, for example by using auto-watering pot bases.

When it comes to saving time, making it easier to water your plants is where to aim your focus. That’s because you can mostly automate watering and create an easy way to remove runoff water. That way you’re not spending much time watering your plants.

Even if your flowering cannabis plant is looking rough with yellowing leaves and nutrient deficiencies, there may still be time to save your marijuana harvest.

Escape the Mid-Flower Curse and harvest better weed.

Today’s cannabis grower experienced this common problem I like to call the Mid-Flower Curse. It affects almost every grower at least once. This is when plant leaves suddenly start looking sick about halfway into the flowering stage.

Note: Some strains like Purple Haze, Green Crack, and Do-Si-Dos are more resistant to problems, but the mid-flower curse can strike any cannabis plant.

See how one grower beat the mid-flower curse and got a great harvest.

Our student initiated the flowering stage and his plants were growing buds a few weeks later. Despite some water stress, the plants were green without spots or nutrient deficiencies.

He watched the buds get bigger each day. Everything was going smoothly. Then, about halfway through the flowering stage, he noticed a handful of green leaves turning yellow.

Yellow tips, a few pale leaves, and the occasional brown scorched spot. 

At first, the symptoms seemed small. So he ignored them.

But it started spreading.

6 days later, those plants had a yellowish cast, especially on the hardest working leaves attached to the biggest buds.

When he looked closely at those leaves, he saw lots of brown and yellow scorch marks.

“Does it need a special supplement or nutrient?” he asked Sirius, who answered, “No, it looks like the pH is off. Check that.”

The grower thought, “How big a deal could that really be?” and told himself he’d do it later.

Another 7 days passed, and the yellowing was hard to ignore now.

Brown spots were everywhere. Even worse, it seemed like the buds had stopped getting bigger. Maybe it’s time to harvest now, our grower thought.

“Should I just harvest them now?” he asks Sirius, who replied, “Look at all the white hairs on the buds, they’re not ready yet. Make sure to check the pH of the runoff too. Try to keep the leaves healthy until harvest.”

The grower finally checked the pH of his runoff water, expecting around 6-7 (the pH zone that helps prevent nutrient problems in soil). After all, he was always giving them water pH’ed exactly to 6.5.

Yet he was shocked to discover his runoff water measured at 5.4 pH. Way too low.

It really was the pH causing these leaf symptoms the whole time.

Once he fixed it, the discoloration stopped spreading. And although most yellow leaves never turned green again, the buds immediately started growing bigger.

By harvest day, the buds had doubled in size.

He dried the buds in the grow tent.

After being dried and cured, the resulting buds were dense and beautiful. He beat the curse.

Lesson: How to Defeat the Mid-Flower Curse

Growers experience the mid-flower curse because most cannabis plants stop making new leaves about halfway through the flowering stage.

From then on, plants put their energy towards developing buds instead of maintaining foliage. Leaves stay green and healthy in ideal conditions even if they’re working hard. That means it’s up to you as the grower to give great care so your cannabis plants keep enough healthy leaves to last until harvest.

Happy leaves help cannabis plants produce great bud quality.

Better late than never is often true for ailing cannabis plants, especially in the middle of the budding phase. Even though you see some yellow leaves now, you might think, “Oh well, it’s already a lost cause” but the truth is every day of good care helps plants develop bigger, denser, and more beautiful buds.

Even after some leaves are lost, it is worth saving the remaining ones. Partly green leaves still help. Don’t give up on your plant just because it’s starting to look a little rough.

Leaves turn light into energy. No leaves = no energy to grow.

What do you do if leaves turn purple? Even purple leaves should look healthy without brown spots or scorch marks on the leaves or edges, like this Runtz plant with green leaves that slowly turned purple close to harvest.

Your #1 job: don’t ignore problems. If you notice yellowing leaves or spots, try to identify the cause and fix it as soon as possible instead of waiting until symptoms spread.

Soil quality is one of the biggest hidden causes of grow problems, and a lot of growers don’t even realize it. Here are some examples.

This grower thought their problem was not enough nutrients because the plant was pale.

But the real problem was the soil. Look closely.

• Thick & muddy – roots can’t get oxygen in soil that’s too thick
• No perlite – these little white “rocks” are key to loose, fluffy soil
• Holds too much water – The soil stays too wet for too long.

Bad cannabis soil can take many forms.

This grower thought he was under-watering the seedlings because the soil looked dry.

But the actual problem was they were growing in low-quality dirt that can’t hold much water.

• Pale – light-colored soil often lacks nutrients and organic matter.
• Solid – this soil is so compacted it’s hard as a rock
• Poor texture – even after adding water, it looks pale and dusty

Don’t set yourself up for failure.

Soil is something you choose before planting a seed, so make sure to set up your grow for success.

Choosing cannabis-friendly soil produces more weed with less effort, because Mother Nature works with you instead of against you. You just need to know what to look for.

What’s the Best Soil for Weed?

There are many brands that work great. My favorite cannabis soil is Fox Farm Coco Loco soil, which pairs well with Fox Farm soil nutrients.

That’s what I used for this grow journal.

When it comes to growing cannabis in soil, you have 3 main choices to ensure great weed.

1. Buy a proven soil – Use a brand known for great cannabis soil. Two great cannabis soil options are Coco Loco potting mix (a coco-fiber-heavy soil mix makes seedlings less prone to overwatering, but needs nutrients earlier) and Ocean Forest soil (true soil that is ”hot” enough you don’t need to add nutrients for several weeks).
2. Use locally available soil – Go to a local gardening store and find “organic potting mix” that looks like the soil examples below. Cannabis soil should be brown, rich, fluffy, and ideally already contains little white rocks called perlite. Make sure to give nutrients after just a few weeks, as cannabis plants quickly use up nutrients in regular soil.
3. Mix your own soil – If you’re looking to make your own soil, here’s an awesome tutorial by Subcool on making cannabis-friendly soil.

Note about soil & nutrients: Cannabis plants are exceptionally nutrient-hungry as they enter the flowering stage. Bigger plants often use up nutrients in the soil, and need nutrient supplementation right as buds are forming, unless you grow in a big pot with a lot of soil.

In addition to Nitrogen, cannabis specifically needs plenty of Phosphorus, Potassium, and micronutrients (a “bloom” nutrient formula) to grow big, dense, potent, and strong-smelling buds.

Give extra “bloom” nutrients as buds form to increase potency, density, and smell.

What should you look for in good cannabis soil?

Weed growers consistently find the best cannabis soil has these characteristics:

• dark and rich
• loose texture
• holds water
• drains well

When Should I Start Adding Cannabis Nutrients in Soil?

Soil is so simple. So close to nature. Add seeds, remember to water your plants, and wait for an awesome harvest, right?

But cannabis plants typically use up the nutrients in the soil. If you don’t start adding nutrients, the start running into nutrient deficiencies (see what that looks like below).

Once plants get hungry, you can’t go wrong with the Fox Farm trio for soil. For cannabis plants, follow the instructions on the label at half-strength. Get the best cannabis nutrients & supplements for soil.

Here’s what you need to watch out for as a soil cannabis grower, so you start adding nutrients before it causes issues.

Pale, lime green cannabis plants in soil = you need to add more nutrients.

If many lower leaves turn yellow and fall off, especially while buds are forming, it’s a sign the plant is “stealing” nutrients from the bottom of the plant to give to the hard-working leaves at the top.

That means if many lower leaves are turning yellow and falling off on their own, you need to add more nutrients.

Add more nutrients if bottom leaves are turning yellow and falling off.

If the bottom of your pot looks like this, the cannabis plant needs more nutrients.

When the Nutrient Problem is Caused by PH

If you see these different symptoms, the cause is likely a pH problem, not needing more nutrients. See pictures of deficiencies caused by pH.

If you see brown spots, or yellow leaves are “stuck” on the plant, it’s likely actually a pH problem.

Healthy Plants Produce Better Harvests

You can still get a great harvest even if you have some nutrient problems. But you get the best cannabis yields and bud quality when plants avoid nutrient deficiencies and get plenty of nutrients while buds are forming.

Which cannabis seeds perform in soil?

You commonly hear soil growers say “soil produces more terpenes”.

So we put it to the test, In our side-by-side grow experiment using super soil vs coco, we found the super soil buds (at least for that grow) had 17% higher terpenes at the lab on average. See the full grow journal.

When terpene production increases, it helps strains express their unique “smell personality”. That means growing strains with strong flavor/smell profiles can help you maximize your soil benefits.

Strains that produce excellent smells in soil

• Sour Diesel –  Recently released by Seedsman, this strain has a faster outdoor finish than most Sativa strains. Buds are dense and sticky growing in traditional diesel-smelling “colas” (big baseball bat buds).
• Purple Oreoz F1 – Get the power of an early finishing F1 strain and the smell of fruity dessert. Excellent bud quality and yields. Suitable for commercial grows.
• Guava Root GMO – This indica that thrives indoors or outdoors. Compact grow pattern, high yielding, “rootbeer” smell hints, beginner friendly. Great for extracts (4.7% hash by weight vis ice water extraction).

3 Core Themes in The Study

Outdoor results were heavily affected by environment, grower decisions, and the chosen soil

• Your Climate is Key – The environment is ultimately the boss when it comes to outdoor growing. You can’t control the environment, and the most successful growers found ways to work with their climate instead of fighting against it.
• Grower Choices Matter –  Including, but not limited to, strain choice. Growers working with the same genetics in different regions had wildly different results from each other. The most experienced growers got great results even when the strains weren’t well suited to their climate. Preventative pest tactics (like IPM) and good watering habits avoided many of the stress and bug-related issues experienced by the less successful growers.
• Healthy Soil = Healthy Plants – One of the most notable results from the 2025 study was the connection between plant performance and soil.

Key Finding: Living soil growers had the best results.

“Growers who utilized living soil systems consistently reported stronger, more vigorous plants with increased resistance to both pests and environmental stress. These plants not only grew better but also recovered faster when challenges arose. Practices like microbial inoculation, compost teas, and regular top dressing with organic inputs proved to be highly effective.”

I visited my dad in Florida a few years ago. As we were walking around a local market, the smell of weed permeated the air. My dad noted, “This weed smells like a skunk with bad body odor.”

I took another whiff. It was definitely weed, but the smell had a sharp, sour edge that really did smell a bit like a skunk gone loose in a locker room.

I didn’t know what to say. I personally like the smell of almost any cannabis. The smell of super skunky weed in particular brings me back to fond memories of when I first smoked weed in the 2000s.

My first weed was super skunky smelling.

But my dad said something I’d never really thought about before.

He said, “The weed I smoked in the ’70s didn’t smell like this at all. It was closer to the smell of cloves. This whole skunky smell is a newer thing.” He said he remembered when the skunky smell first appeared in his part of Maine in the late 1990s. The new skunky weed was much stronger, and had good effects too. But he still missed when weed smelled more pleasant.

“Dad, you need to get out to California and try some of my weed.” I said.

The next year he did come to visit me in Southern California. After trying the weed I grow, followed by his first visit to a dispensary, he said, “You know, none of this weed smells like how I remember from the 70s, but I love how all this California weed smells so sweet and mild.”

“Do you like the smell of California weed better than what you smoked in the 70s?” I asked, both of us red-eyed from the weed we’d been smoking all afternoon.

“I’m not sure. That smell came with a lot of great memories… but smoking this strong-ass California weed with you ain’t bad either.” I smiled. For my dad, that’s a huge compliment.

What Makes Weed Smell How It Does?

My dad’s comments left me wondering what causes cannabis to smell the way it does.

Cannabis smells don’t change at random. They change as growers select and breed for different effects or customer preferences.

I discovered there’s been quite a bit of research on what gives each cannabis strain its signature scent.^[1][2][3]

• Terpenes – These aromatic organic compounds “evaporate” in the air and leave a smell. Pine, lemon, floral, sweet… these common smells are heavily influenced by terpenes.
• Volatile Sulfur Compounds – “Skunk” and strong diesel smells typically come from sulfur compounds, not terpenes.

There are also rare or lesser known compounds. But besides terpenes and sulfur compounds, there hasn’t been much research into what causes “other” smells of weed.

Terpenes – Most “good” smells

Of all the things that affect cannabis smell, terpenes have been the most studied by far.

Terpenes make smells like:

• Pine
• Floral
• Citrus
• Spicy
• Earthy
• …and more

The first “good” smelling weed I ever encountered was weed I grew myself. It was a strain called “Mountain Berry” and I got the seeds from a dispensary in San Diego. But these days, almost all the weed at California dispensaries smells sweet, fruity, piney, or other mild floral or earthy odors.

This “Mountain Berry” I grew around 2010 smelled sweet and delicious. Thank you terpenes!

Research shows that terpenes don’t just change smell, but also affect the “high”. For example, the citrus-smelling terpene limonene in weed has been linked to an increase in relaxation.^[4]

This combination of terpenes and weed, sometimes called the entourage effect, likely contributed to the popularity of high-terpene strains.

Mandarin Cookies buds are high in terpenes, giving a “loud” smell without skunkiness.

But terpenes aren’t the whole story when it comes to cannabis smells. The most potent smells come from an entirely different source.

Volatile Sulfur Compounds – Most “pungent” smells

For example, the “skunk” smell of cannabis comes from volatile sulfur compounds, not terpenes. Specifically, 3-methyl-2-butene-1-thiol is the guilty party. It is similar to the spray of a striped skunk at the molecular level, creating that signature scent.

If the smell of your weed literally makes your nose wrinkle, it’s often coming from this category of smells.

And there are other even lesser known substances that affect the smell of cannabis.

Rare or Lesser Known Smelly Compounds

When a cannabis strain smells particularly “exotic” or not like other weed, it’s often some of these unknown compounds causing the smell.

Why did “Skunky” weed get so popular?

The skunk strains that got introduced into weed in the 1980s through the 2000s weren’t necessarily bred for the smell at first.

This line of genetics had significantly higher THC, and this was most likely the main motivation. Skunky weed was potent.

As breeders selected plants to increase the perceived potency, the volatile sulfur compounds came along for the ride.

Over time, the smell became associated with good weed, and some growers began to select for it directly.

Stanky strong weed became an experience all its own.

Regardless, this new line of skunky weed genetics had much higher THC than what was growing in towns all over America.

The skunky strain genetics spread like wildfire, and much of the smell diversity was lost, at least initially.

Sweet Smelling Strains Rose in the 2010s

In response to legalization in the US and Canada, a wave of new people started buying weed at dispensaries. For the first time, customers actually had choices. Weed was competing on flavor now, not just strength.

And this new market of discerning cannabis enthusiasts loved tasty strains with dessert names (Girl Scout Cookies, Dos Si Dos, Wedding Cake, Candy Games, etc.)

Purple Ghost Candy is a potent, high yielding, and sweet smelling strain.

As a result, throughout the 2010s and into the 2020s, many of the new strains were selected for 3 main things: high THC, pleasant smells, and high bag appeal (looks beautiful).

This led to popular strains with completely different smell profiles.

The Smells of Today

By 2026, cannabis smells have completely changed.

Between dispensaries and home growers, breeding has gone in many directions.

You can still find strains with some of the old smells, but especially in the US the “skunkiness” is a lot more mild. If you’ve watched cartoons, new weed strains are missing the stink lines.

You can’t get the exact weed back from the past, but you can find weed that captures part of it.

Here are a few seeds worth trying…

3 Cannabis Seeds with Notable Smells

For growers looking for classic effects and smells, a resurgence of breeders are working with older genetics to bring back some of the best aspects of the classics.

• Purple Haze – There’s anecdotal evidence that the Seed Supreme captured some of “Purple haze all in my brain” magic. As a plant, these Purple Haze seeds are easy to grow with delicious smelling, purple-tinted buds. Purple Haze seeds store surprisingly well, and maintain high germination rates for years as long as seeds are stored properly.
• Maui Wowie – Signature tropical scent and long lasting effects that won’t put you to sleep. These seeds thrive indoors and out, sprouting tough plants that are mold resistant and can handle some stress.
• Acapulco Gold – This version of Acapulco Gold by Barney’s Farm is a Cannabis Cup Winner. Golden-green buds, unique smell reminiscent of classic central American genetics make these seeds stand out against other versions of Acapulco Gold.

3 Cannabis Seeds That Smell Like a Skunk

• Skunk #1 by Barney’s Farm – Genetics Barney’s Farm has maintained for over 20 years, and one of their pungent strains available in seed form.
• Durban Poison – They Barney’s Farm seed version of this strain has remained one of their top sellers since I started growing in 2008. I remember drooling over it online. Although the THC percentage has increased, they focus on maintaining that unique smell.
• La Pew clone (US Only) – If you want REALLY odoriferous weed, get a cannabis clone through the mail. Clones are more stable than seeds as far as bud smell and this clone cut reeks.

The recent Candy Games #38 I grew had a very unique aroma. Check out the grow journal. The name was a misnomer. It did not smell like candy at all to me (for candy smell get Purple Ghost Candy). But  the smell did remind me of the the Maui Wowie and Mazar buds I grew in the early 2010s.

As a cannabis grower, you inevitably pick up “microskills” along the way, making it easier and easier to prevent problems and maximize harvests in the future.

But you can gain the power of experience without learning the hard way. You just need to learn from other home growers who already walked the path.

Plants grow more and better weed if you give them what they want.

Today I wanted to share 5 crucial microskills that help your plants grow faster and produce more weed with surprisingly little effort.

The first four microskills are about preventing and fixing problems, the last one is about locking in the best bud quality.

5 Microskills Every Grower Eventually Learns

1.) Read leaf symptoms

Let me start with the most common symptom new growers see: overwatering (especially young plants).

Example: Overwatering causes droopy leaves

Overwatered seedlings often get “deficiencies” like yellowing or spots on the leaves.

For example, this seedling has yellow leaves, but it has nothing to do with nutrients. Notice how wet this soil is for this tiny cannabis seedling. That’s a clue that the yellow leaves on this seedling is caused by overwatering. The roots can’t “breath”.

2.) Match light intensity to plant needs

Cannabis plants need more light than most houseplants. Outdoors, plants thrive in direct sunlight for 8+ hours a day.

Indoors, plants need a grow light. But unlike the sun, you can keep your grow light too close or too far away from your plants.

If you remember that food is light for plants, it makes sense that giving too much (light too close) or not enough (light too far) would cause problems.

Luckily you have a few effective ways to ensure your grow lights are the right distance away:

Follow the manufacturer’s recommended light distance from plants (to start)

Measure light levels with a PAR light meter or PPFD app on your phone

• Seedlings – 100–300 µmol/m²/s
• Vegetative – 300–600 µmol/m²/s
• Flowering – 600–1000 µmol/m²/s (700 is average)

Pay attention to plants (most important)

• Move lights further away if you notice symptoms on the on the leaves closest to the light (“light stress”)
• Move lights closer if plants are growing “tall” with a lot of space between sets of leaves

Example: Tall seedlings need more light

For these next plants, the leaves close to light look pale and stressed because they were experiencing too-high light levels (light stress). The plants recovered quickly after the LED grow light was moved further away.

Bonus tip: Raise your grow light before dimming it, especially in a grow tent. As long as you can control heat, a full-power light often increases yields compared to dimming.

Why? Dimming reduces the total number of photons, while a raised light produces the same amount of photons. Although some light gets lost to the walls when the grow light is further away, a grow tent reflects a lot of that “lost” light back towards the plant (without PPFD spikes).

3.) Give nutrients based on plant response

Watch your plant for signs of too much or not enough nutrients.

This pale cannabis plant needs more nutrients, vs the healthy green cannabis plants which is getting the perfect amount of nutrients.

Leaves get dark green if the plant gets too much nutrients over time.

If you’re using a good nutrient system, and following the above  stems, any other deficiencies that pop up are likely a pH problem.

4.) Calibrate a PH pen

It’s not glamorous, but it helps to think of this like the ULTIMATE supplement. Imagine if there was a supplement that you could give your plants that just made them grow faster and healthier. Getting a pH pen to test and adjust pH is like that supplement.

Did you know? PH is the #1 cause of mystery problems for home growers. Accurate pH at the roots is key to preventing nutrient deficiencies, but if you don’t realize that, the symptoms can be difficult to diagnose.

But why does pH matter? Nutrient compounds take a different chemical form depending on the pH, and some forms are easier for roots to absorb than others.

What that means: If your plant is experiencing deficiencies and you aren’t testing the pH, that is one of the first things to check.

Basically, get a PH pen, calibrate it so it’s accurate, and test the pH of your water.

• Soil: 6-7 pH
• Coco/Hydro: 5.5-6.5 pH

If your pH comes out the right range, awesome! If not, add a tiny amount of PH DOWN or PH UP liquid to the water, shake, and then measure again until the water comes out in the right range.

So what is “calibration”? Basically you stick the pen in calibration fluid and click a button. It’s easy and quick after you do it once.

Which pH pen? I love this Apera PH Pen, which is fast and accurate. I’ve found it keeps calibration for months. But any pH pen works great. Even a really cheap pH pen is usually okay right after your calibrate it.

5.) Know when to harvest

This is one of the most powerful skills you can have as a grower. Being able to harvest your buds at the right time is key to getting the best yields, density, and potency. Many growers unintentionally harvest at the wrong time, and lose out on potency, density, or yields.

Main idea: Most strains are ready to harvest when most of the hairs on the buds have darkened and curled in.

Today learn the universal principles that let you grow better weed than you can buy. 

I love these strains for home growers: Blue Dream (pictured here), Candy Games #38, and Purple Ghost Candy.

1.) Start with Extraordinary Genetics

What to Do: Start with the best seeds you can find. Good seeds germinate consistently and produce the kind of weed you want (density, smell, size, effects, strength, color, smoothless, etc.).

Why: Good seeds grow good weed with your desired effects, even if you make mistakes. Plants works with you instead of against you.

Quick Win: Use one of the following 3 methods to find great genetics for your next cannabis grow.

1. Choose a proven breeder and read the strain description to find what suits you. A good breeder always maintains quality for all their seeds. Some breeders I like lately are Happy Valley Genetics, Seedsman, Seed Supreme, and Ethos (all represented in my current grow journal). 
2. Copy what works – Get the genetics that you see people growing great weed with. For example, if you have friends that grow weed, or interact with growers on social media, take their lead if you like what you see. Find out what they’re growing and get seeds from the same source to copy their results.
3. Enjoy the gamble – The old fashioned method. Grow the seeds you have, or choose a strain that sounds good and go for the adventure! Good seed banks curate their seed selection and have seed germination guarantees, so any of their seeds should produce good weed.

The seeds you pick make a huge difference to results. For example, the following plants were grown together with the same grow medium, nutrients, and care. But look how different they’re turning out! The difference is 100% genetics, not anything I did.

Blue Dream and Candy Games #38 have wildly different genetics! Choose a strain that makes weed you want to grow.

2.) Use a Strong LED Grow Light (Cannabis-Specific)

What to Do: Get a proven cannabis grow light that’s designed for the size of your grow space.

Why: Light = food for plants. More light is better, up to a point. Spectrum (light color) matters too, affecting not only yields, but also density, color, and potency. Older grow lights, most especially “blurple” LEDs, don’t get nearly as good cannabis yields or bud density as newer “quantum board” style LEDs with pinkish or white light.

Modern cannabis LEDs usually produce white or pinkish light.

Quick Win:

1. Choose an LED grow light that’s proven to get great results with weed. The best thing you can do is use a grow light that growers are already using to produce great cannabis harvests. 
2. Good LED companies include… We’ve consistently found these are the most popular grow lights for GrowWeedEasy.com readers: Spider Farmer, Mars Hydro, and HLG. I’ve used multiple models from each of these companies and always had great results with growing weed. Which one to get? Choose the grow light that best fits your grow space and budget requirements. Spider Farmer and Mars Hydro get about equal results. HLG lights tend to be overpowered and cost a lot, and often have to be turned down even in a dialed in setup, but gets some of the best bud density of any LED we’ve tried so far. Even their tiny 65W and 100W LED lights have produced multiple ounces for us.
3. Check out our list of 9 recommended cannabis lights with yield estimates, and see pictures of real cannabis plants we’ve grown with them.

A HLG 65W LED is surprisingly productive in a 2x2x3 grow tent. Not bad for an LED that uses less electricity than my bedroom fan.

Or upgrade to a bigger grow light, like a HLG 350 Diablo (or two).

Or go BIG, like Max did here, with multiple lights including a Spider Farmer G5000.

Often it’s easier to combine multiple smaller grow lights than have one enormous grow light. That way you can adjust them independently and have more control over where light falls.

3.) The Right Nutrients at the Right Time

Whether you grow in soil, coco, or hydro, provide proper nutrients. Either use cannabis-specific nutrients and dole out to plants on a schedule. Or start with a cannabis-specific soil that slowly delivers the right nutrients at the right time (called “just-add-water” super soil). 

What to Do: Make sure plants get the right amount of nutrients at the right time.

Why: Faster greener growth, but more importantly, proper nutrition in the flowering stage greatly increases bud quality, yields, and potency. On the other hand, a plant that is starved of nutrients while buds are forming makes small, airy, non-potent buds. Most crucially, make sure plants have plenty of nutrients for the first 6+ weeks of the flowering stage, until hairs start darkening and curling in. Plants still need nutrients after that, but for the best harvest, it’s especially important to avoid significant nutrient deficiencies during the early flowering stage and initial bud formation.

Quick Win: Use cannabis nutrients and follow an already-tested schedule

1. Easy cheap option – Dyna-Gro Grow + Bloom. Give at 1 tsp/gallon. Give “Grow” for seedlings until first 3 weeks into flowering stage. Then once the flowering stretch is over, give “Bloom” until harvest. These nutrients were initially designed for orchids, but growers have discovered they give surprisingly great results with weed. I was impressed when I tried them in coco.
2. Advanced nutrient system – General Hydroponics Flora trio. My personal favorite nutrients, I find the GH trio provides some of the fastest growth and biggest yields. No need to follow a special schedule. Just follow the amounts listed on the side of the bottle at half-strength, and only raise the amounts if plant seem pale. I’ve had good results in soil, coco, and hydro.
3. Use super soil instead – Use a “just add water” organic soil that’s made for a plant like cannabis. This kind of soil slowly releases nutrients over the course of the grow, so you don’t need to add any extra nutrients. Nature’s Living Soil is a proven super soil concentrate that makes super soil when used with Coco Loco soil. Just remember, super soil can be stinky at first! But the smell settles after the plants make themselves at home in the soil.

General Hydroponics Flora trio are my personal favorite nutrients for growing weed.

Follow the directions on the bottle at half-strength to grow green, happy, and abundant cannabis plants.

4.) Water Plants So They Grow Faster

Water plants regularly with the right amount at a time. It’s important roots don’t dry out, or stay overly wet for too long. Luckily, if you’re following all the other steps here, you can make some watering mistakes and plants still turn out great. Cannabis plants are remarkably able to recover from watering issues as long as you course-correct.

What to Do: Water plants properly. The easiest method is to follow a cannabis-specific watering schedule like the one below. Or follow proven general principles.

Why: Plants grow faster and get fewer deficiencies, especially seedlings, when given the right amount of water. Good watering practices helps plants start growing fast out the gate.

I use a battery operated water transfer pump to easily water plants.

Quick Win: Basically, give seedlings just a little water at a time, at first, in a small circle around the base, every few days. If you don’t want guesswork, follow the following seedling watering schedule that I use. It’s suitable as long as you’re in a 3 or 5-gallon pot (and works pretty well in most sizes). Never wonder again if you’re over or under-watering your seedlings!

Day 1 – Give 2 cups (500ml) water per plant (at this point, your cannabis seedlings should have their leaves completely open and be in a 3-gallon or 5-gallon pot under the grow light)
Day 3 – Give 2 cups (500ml) water per plant
Day 6 – Give 2 cups (500ml) water per plant
Day 8 – Give 3 cups (750ml) water per plant (every 3 days after this)
Day 11 – Give 3 cups (750ml) water per plant
Day 14 – Give 4 cups (1 liter) water per plant
Day 17 – Give 4 cups (1 liter) water per plant
Day 20 – Give 5 cups (1.25 liter) water per plant
Day 23 – Give 6 cups (1.5 liter) water per plant
Day 26 – Give 6 cups (1.5 liter) water per plant
Day 29 – Give 8 cups or 1/2 gallon (2 liter) water per plant

At first, cannabis seedlings only need a little water in a circle around their base.

After the first 30 days, start watering like this…

(1+ Months) Cannabis Watering Schedule

1. Wait until top inch of soil is dry (for coco, wait until top is mostly dry)
2. Water until you get 10-20% runoff out the bottom
3. Remove runoff (test the pH if needed) and start over

P.S. Learn about auto-watering pot bases so you can water plants less often. I’m loving them lately.

5.) Harvest at the Right Time

Wait to harvest until buds have reached peak potency, size, and bud quality. Harvest earlier (speedier more “up” weed) or later (stronger relaxation effect) to achieve your desired effects. Dry and cure using a proven home method.

What to Do: Harvest buds based on their maturity level. After harvest, dry buds to make them smokable (buds are mostly water on the plant), and then jar them so they “cure”.

Why: Choosing the right harvest time maximizes yields, potency, and effects. Drying and especially curing increases density, appearance, potency, and effects, while enhancing the natural bud smell.

Fill your cannabis grow tent with buds using today’s quick wins.

1.) Maximize Your LED Grow Tent Strategy

Quick win: In a grow tent, raise LED lights first. Only dim if needed.

Improve your LED grow tent game with this strategy.

The walls of a modern cannabis grow tent are 90+% reflective. Extra light is reflected back and helps fatten buds deeper into the plant.

1. Full power at recommended distance – Keep dimmable LEDs at 100% power if you can. This makes the most light photons (“food” for leaves). Start at the recommended distance.
2. Raise lights before dimming – If top leaves look stressed, raise the lights first. Even to the top of the grow tent (zip ties are your friends).
3. Dim lights if plant health demands it – Dim the grow light if it’s too hot even with fans and venting, or if top leaves look stressed with the grow light at the top of the tent.

Even a relatively small 200W LED is effective 3+ feet (1 m) feet away in a grow tent. On the other hand, dimming to 50% cuts yields in half. Raise before dim.

Even 3 feet (1 meter) away, a 200W Spider Farmer LED produced over 10 ounces.

Insider Tip: If your top leaves are getting stressed even after the LED is raised to the top of the grow tent, don’t hesitate to dim your grow lights. And don’t hurry to raise the intensity again. Wait until discoloration stops spreading before turning back to full power, if ever.

Healthy leaves help power the growth of a lot of big, high-quality buds. Don’t sacrifice leaf health to maximize light intensity.

Keep leaves healthy for highest quality buds.

If the grow tent is always hot or top leaves appear yellow or discolored, you often get a better harvest simply by turning your grow light power down until harvest. Sometimes less really is more.

True mastery of LEDs is all about using them right for your particular setup. Maximizing light helps maximize yields, but lowering light levels can improve bud quality if it’s too hot or plants are stressed. Always listen to your plants first.

2.) Bend Over Tall Stems = More & Better Quality Buds

Quick win: Every time you check on your garden, bend any tall branches down and away from the center of the plants. This naturally creates a wide, flat “table-top” shape that increases the number of bud sites.

This results in lots of buds sites about the same distance from the grow light. A sea of buds gives you the best yields indoors.

Why this works: The biggest, tightest, and most potent buds tend to grow at the top of a cannabis plant. A flat, tabletop canopy helps cannabis grow as many of these top buds as possible.

Insider Tip: Lots of big buds from plant training = sagging stems in late flowering (great problem to have!). Use specially-designed weed plant yo-yos to safely hook around buds so you can string them up to the top of the tent.

3.) Feed Plants Smart (Not Just More)

Quick win: Give cannabis plants the right amount of nutrients at the right time, and they reward you with faster growth, fatter/longer buds, and denser buds.

The easiest way to do that is start with good cannabis nutrients and follow a proven nutrient schedule. That ensures your cannabis plants always get what they need.

Why This Works: Nutrients are more like a multivitamin than food. Cannabis plants get their food from light, so you get the best harvest by giving plants the right amount of nutrients (not too much, not too little).

Insider Tip: Take the time to pH balance your water before giving to plants. This helps keep leaves green and healthy.

4.) Give Plants a Bud-Building Environment

Quick win: Get a thermometer for the grow space to track the environment in your grow space. Proper temperature and humidity are key to good bud quality, and having a way to measure them is the first step.

The ideal bud-building environment is essentially a warm, sunny, breezy day. Aim for 70-80°F (20-26°C) and 40-60% relative humidity.

I hang up my thermometer so it’s easy to see when peeking on the plants.

Why This Works: A plant in a good environment is a happy plant. Without sweltering heat, high humidity, or stale air, cannabis has more energy to put toward bud-building.

Insider Tip: Use a small oscillating fan in the grow space to strengthen stems, prevent hot spots, and improve bud structure formation. I love this quiet little grow tent clip fan which hooks directly to the poles of a grow tent.

5.) Harvest at the Right TIme = Improve Potency

Quick win: Choose the right time to harvest (around when all the hairs have curled in). A little patience goes a long way.

Why this works: Buds can gain 10-25% of their size in just the last week or two, and harvesting at the right time helps buds reach their full potential as far as THC, smell, and density.

Updates on the 2026 Farm Bill

“How will the new Farm bill for 2026 affect home growers? Is there a specific deadline for growers? I have seen many opinions, but have yet to find a straightforward answer to this question.” ~ Bob

Laws and regulations seem to be evolving every day. The reason no one can give you a straight answer is because no one knows for sure what will happen.

If you want my personal opinion, I suspect it will have a small effect in the short term, and a long-term dampening effect.

Seed companies may try to work with lawmakers to find ways to ship seeds in compliance with the law. But unless the law is changed, fewer small breeders will participate. Some people are concerned that only the biggest companies with deep pockets for a legal team might be able to easily sell seeds and take payments.

That’s why home growers need to value cannabis genetics.

In other words, don’t panic. However, do take on a general preparedness mindset.

Our seeds page is not meant to be a comprehensive list of seed sources. Sirius and I are just a two-person team and can’t try every seed company. There are many, many outstanding cannabis seed sources not listed on our seeds page.

But what the page is, is the list of the seed banks we actually use ourselves to grow weed at home and document on the website.

When we stop using a seed company ourselves, for whatever reason, we take it off the seed source page. Usually, they haven’t done anything wrong, just simply no longer carry strains we’re looking to grow with.

We believe it’s crucial to ensure every seed bank on the list is legit, and only stay if we continue to use it for our home grows.

Our seed bank testing is led by you: If we hear about a really great new company that everyone loves, we will test it out ourselves. Our goal isn’t just to grow great weed (though we do a lot of that too!), but also help home growers find exactly what they’re looking for.

• Community feedback – If we keep hearing good things about a particular seed source, we know it’s time to give it a try.
• Order seeds anonymously – We never tell them it’s us. I always order the seeds myself as if I were a regular customer. I feel like that’s way more likely to give the “authentic” experience.
• Grow the seeds – Next, we actually grow the seeds from germination to harvest in a home grow environment.
• Document the results – We take pictures and notes about each plant, including where we got the seeds, and share that information on GrowWeedEasy.com and through our newsletter.
• Lab testing – When funding is available, we get the buds lab-tested, especially for side-by-side grow experiments with clones (like testing super soil vs coco or plant training methods like defoliation vs natural)
