Quick Guide: When to Give More Nutrients in Soil

These are signs your cannabis plant in soil needs more nutrients overall. Giving soil nutrients to plants with the following symptoms typically solves the problem within just a few waterings. Other nutrient deficiencies are often actually a pH problem.

Pale, lime green cannabis plants in soil = you need to add more nutrients.

If many lower leaves turn yellow and fall off, especially while buds are forming, it’s a sign the plant is “stealing” nutrients from the bottom of the plant to give to the hard-working leaves at the top.

That means if many lower leaves are turning yellow and falling off on their own, you need to add more nutrients.

Add more nutrients if bottom leaves are turning yellow and falling off.

If the bottom of your pot looks like this, the cannabis plant needs more nutrients.

Cannabis nitrogen deficiency - yellow leaves are falling off the bottom of the plant

When the Nutrient Problem is Caused by PH

If you see these different symptoms, the cause is likely a pH problem, not needing more nutrients. See pictures of deficiencies caused by pH.

If you see brown spots, or yellow leaves are “stuck” on the plant, it’s likely actually a pH problem.

You can still get a great harvest even if you have some nutrient problems. But you get the best cannabis yields and bud quality when plants get extra nutrients while buds are forming.

Tips for Growing Marijuana in Soil

Do You Even Need Special Nutrients to Grow Marijuana in Soil?

  • Cannabis has high nutrient needs, especially in the flowering/budding phase. Without enough nutrients during budding, the plant won’t make buds as big as they could be.
  • You can avoid using extra nutrients altogether by growing in well-amended composted soil and transplanting your cannabis into a nice big pot with fresh composted soil right before the switch to the flowering stage, which should be enough to last through the flowering stage. In composted soil, tiny microorganisms slowly bread down the nutrients for your plants, so the nutrients are fed to the plant slowly and regularly.
  • A potted cannabis plant in regular (non-composted) potting soil often uses up all the nutrients in the soil before they even make it to the flowering stage. After about 3-4 weeks of growing in an average sized pot, a cannabis grower either needs to repot the plant into new, fresh soil, or supplement with extra nutrients in order to get everything to the plant that it needs.
  • There are “natural” ways to provide extra nutrients to your cannabis (for example egg shells, coffee beans, dolomite lime, etc all add minerals and nutrients) but these usually do not break down fast enough or consistently enough to make sure your cannabis doesn’t run into nutrient deficiencies. Another problem with using things like this is that giving your plant too much of one nutrient can actually make it deficient with another nutrient. So it can be difficult to get the right proportions right unless using a soil recipe that’s specialized for cannabis or by adding extra nutrients in the water.
  • Want more info? Since it’s just a weed, why can’t I grow cannabis in the regular dirt outside?

How to Get Enough Nutrients to Your Marijuana Plants

To make sure your cannabis plants don’t run into nutrient deficiencies while growing in soil, you need to either…

Conclusion: Adding soil nutrients to the water tends to get the best cannabis yields, potency, and density.

What Soil Should I Get to Grow Weed?

Not sure which soil should you start with? One of the most popular cannabis soil mixes is Fox Farms Ocean Forest soil. This is a potent cannabis soil mix that has enough nutrients to last even a hungry cannabis plant for several weeks. No need to think about nutrients for a little while.

Fox Farms Ocean Forest soil is a nutrient-rich marijuana soil that grows thriving weed plants.

Ocean Forest potting soil by Fox Farm is a great soil for growing cannabis

My personal favorite cannabis soil is Fox Farm Coco Loco, which contains a bunch of coco (ground up coconut husks) instead of peat moss.

Coco Loco is an ideal cannabis soil

Coco Loco soil is lighter on nutrients yet also holds more water than a peat-based soil like Ocean Forest. So you can water cannabis plants in Coco Loco soil a little less often, but you should start to add nutrients in the water once plants are a week old to get the fastest growth. Once you start adding nutrients in Coco Loco, cannabis plants grow extremely fast.

What size pot for soil?

A fabric pot (also called a “smart pot”) is a container made out of fabric. Fabric pots works perfectly when growing cannabis plants in soil since they help deliver more oxygen to the roots. Hard-sided pots can also be used, though plants might not grow quite as fast.

  • 3-gallon fabric pot – For a smaller grow, 3-gallon pots might be better because they take up less room, and the reduced root room helps keep plants smaller.
  • 5-gallon fabric pot – For an easy, low maintenance soil grow, use 5-gallon fabric pots. This won’t need to be watered as often, though they do take up more room.

Proven Soil Watering Schedule

  • How often to water? Make sure to follow a proven soil watering schedule.
  • Proven watering schedule – Use a proven cannabis seedling watering schedule for growing weed in soil.

Don’t want to use nutrients? Learn how to mix up your own super soil so it has all the nutrients your cannabis plants will need! Bonus: With composted super soil made using the recipe in the link above, you don’t need to worry about maintaining your pH! your super soil will automatically manage the pH for you.

What Are the Best Soil Nutrients?

  • Use a “Vegetative” (high Nitrogen) nutrient formula for the vegetative stage after your plants have used up all the nutrients in the soil
  • Use a “Bloom” (low Nitrogen) nutrient formula for the flowering stage

But are they the best marijuana nutrients? Which one is the best?

There are so many nutrient options out there! How can growers figure out which ones are actually the best cannabis nutrients? In fact, what makes a nutrient system good or bad for growing cannabis in the first place? The answer is it’s about the NPK nutrient ratios!

Optimal Cannabis N-P-K Nutrient Ratios
Life Stage N P K
Vegetative/Grow High Medium Medium or High
Flowering/Bloom Low Medium or High High

* In a pinch, nutrients for cactus or succulents can be used in the flowering stage until you get better nutrients because they have similar nutrient ratios

General Hydroponics Flora trio is a great set of cannabis nutrients for all growers. These aren’t the only nutrient ratios that will work for growing cannabis, but these ones work well. Adding cannabis nutrients to your grow can help you get the best potency, yields and growth from your plants, especially in the flowering stage when cannabis uses a lot of nutrients to make bud. Cannabis plants have two stages of life and they need the right nutrients at the right time.

Note: Don’t use anything with time-released nutrients (like fertilizer spikes, or Miracle-Gro soil – they deliver too much N in the flowering stage).

Most nutrient bottles have 3 numbers, called "NPK" which stands for Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium

Most nutrient bottles have 3 numbers, often called N-P-K, which stands for NitrogenPhosphorus and Potassium

(Why “K? The atomic symbol of Potassium is “K” from Neo-Latin kalium)

Marijuana plants need different ratios of these 3 nutrients (as well as several micronutrients) depending on what stage of life they are currently in.

For example, cannabis plants in the vegetative stage need nitrogen to power the growth of leaves. In the flowering/budding stage, cannabis needs less nitrogen and greater levels of phosphorus to assist with proper bud growth.

Grow huge colas that smell amazing by starting out with the best cannabis nutrients

Because of the varied nutrient needs of the cannabis plant, it’s often easier for many growers to use a professional nutrient system made for a plant like cannabis, instead of trying to mix up their own. With a professional nutrient system, you don’t have to figure out your own changing nutrient ratios, and you don’t have to worry about chemical reactions that occur from combining different types of nutrients incorrectly (which can create fertilizer salts and cause nutrient lock-out).

A professional cannabis nutrient system will save many growers a lot of time, frustration and money. There are many nutrient systems to choose from which have been created by long-time cannabis growers and breeders around the world!

When it comes to finding a nutrient system to use with your cannabis plants, the first question you ask yourself should be: “What is my growing medium?”

Warning: When it comes to growing cannabis, avoid any nutrients which claim to be “extended” or “slow release”! They can cause all types of unexpected problems.

If you’re growing in soil, you will want to get nutrients made for soil.

With all nutrient systems, don’t start at full strength or it might burn your cannabis plants!

Different strains have different preferences, and some plants are very sensitive to nutrient burn.

How Much Soil Nutrients to Give Cannabis?

  • Start at half strength – I recommend starting new nutrient systems at half-strength and only raise the nutrient levels as needed.
  • Fast-growing plants need more nutrients – If your cannabis plants are growing very fast (inches a day) they likely need full-strength nutrients regardless of the type of grow light.

Other Factors That Affect Nutrient Levels

  • Small grow lights require less nutrients for plants to be healthy, on average – Many home growers will never need to raise nutrient levels above half-strength because their plants are under relatively small LED grow lights (100-200W). Plants just aren’t “digesting” enough light to need lots of nutrients.
  • Big grow lights often require need full-strength nutrients – On the other hand, cannabis plants are under powerful, bright lights may require full-strength nutrients (or even more in rare cases).
  • Individual plants have different needs – Some strains or specific cannabis require more or less nutrients. You sometimes notice you have plants in the same environment, but some plants get “hungry” for nutrients while other plants getting the same conditions are getting enough or even too much.
  • Pay attention to plants more than anything! If a plant looks like it needs more nutrients, give it more. If it looks like it needs less, give it less.

Plants turn yellow or lime green all over when they need more nutrients overall.

Nitrogen deficiency in action - one plants is "hungry" for nutrients (yellow leaves, pale all over) while the other is a healthy Kelly green.

If leaves are dark green all over, they probably need less nutrients overall.

Too much nutrients causes a nitrogen toxicity, with dark leaves and tip burn

“Nutrient burn” (dry, brown, possibly curling tips) is another sign of too-high levels of nutrients or supplements. Pay extra close attention if nutrient burn affects all the leaves at once, especially if you see it happen right after raising nutrient levels or adding a new supplement.

Nutrient burn on all the leaves is another signal the nutrient levels are too high.

Burnt leaf tips as the results of cannabis nutrient burn

Plants use light for food (and to power the growth of buds), not nutrients. Just like eating a bunch of multi-vitamins every day will make you sick, giving plants too high levels of nutrients can make them sick, too. With plants, just like humans, you will get the best results by paying attention to nutrient needs on a regular basis. Don’t wait until your whole plant is yellowing to try to figure out the problem!

Some growers try to push their plants to the limit of what they can take, giving stronger and stronger levels of nutrients until plants show signs of nutrient burn, but I don’t believe this is necessary. Sometimes less is more. I believe that as long as your plant is not showing signs of deficiencies (such as growing pale green leaves towards the bottom of the plant), you are generally in the right range.

Many cannabis growers will find that professional nutrients work well at half-strength, and only growers with very bright lights and fast-growing plants will need to raise nutrient levels above that. There are also certain strains that seem to do better at higher nutrient levels than most others.

Here are pictures of cannabis plants with nutrient problems (and solutions).

Please, save yourself the time and frustration – get a nutrient system that’s proven to work for growing cannabis! If cost is a worry…

An Example of Cheap (But Effective) Cannabis Nutrients: Dyna-Gro Grow & Bloom. Use Dyna-Gro “Grow” bottle in the vegetative stage & Dyna-Gro Bloom bottle in the flowering stage. This cannabis nutrients work great for growing marijuana. You don’t need anything else besides these two bottles of nutrients to grow weed all the way to harvest and this simple cannabis nutrient system is cheap (effective for soil, coco coir and hydro!). If you’re not sure which nutrients to get and you’re on a budget, consider going with Dyna-Gro!

An easy and simple nutrient systems that for beginning cannabis growers in soil is the Fox Farms Nutrient Trio for Soil. These are professional-level nutrients, and one of the the most popular nutrient systems for growing weed in soil.

Fox Farm Nutrient Trio – excellent, mostly organic cannabis nutrients.

Fox Farms nutrient trio is one of the best nutrient systems for growing cannabis in soil, available on Amazon.com!

The Fox Farms trio works great for growing any cannabis strain, without needing any additional supplements.

There are three different bottles that you will need to grow cannabis, “Grow Big,” “Big Bloom,” and “Tiger Bloom.” They are often sold together. Simply follow the included nutrient schedule (here’s a PDF, here’s a JPG) from Fox Farms.

Make sure you get the soil version if growing in soil, because Fox Farms offers a hydroponic version of the same nutrient line.

IMPORTANT: Root pH Affects How Well Your Cannabis Absorbs Nutrients!

Nutrient Picks for Growing Cannabis in Soil

  • Fox Farms Nutrient Trio for Soil <– Very concentrated, less is more. “Grow Big” & “Tiger Bloom” provide most of the major nutrients your cannabis needs, while “Big Bloom” has many micro nutrients and beneficial compounds that help nutrient uptake and root health. This trio works extremely well by itself, just follow the feeding schedule (here’s a PDF, here’s a JPG) from Fox Farms. They offer a lot of supplements, but the only bottles you need to be successful growing cannabis is the FF trio, which is highlighted in green on the schedule. The trio tends to be strong, so use it sparingly (especially “Grow Big” & “Tiger Bloom”). I recommend giving plain pH’ed water every other watering to make sure your plants only get exactly what they need.

  • Botanicare Pure Blend for Soil (Grow and Bloom) – Vegetative Stage (“Grow” formula) & Flowering Stage (“Bloom” formula) nutrients <– Recommended for Beginners because this nutrient system is easy to use, relatively cheap, and can be found at almost any hydro store or online. Botanicare Pure Blend for Soil works great for growing any cannabis strain, without needing a lot of extra care, or any additional supplements. The two bottles are all that’s needed to get your plants successfully to harvest time. You can follow the instructions on the bottle or use the feeding schedule from Botanicare (here’s a PDF, here’s a JPG). They offer a lot of supplements, but the only bottles you need to be successful growing cannabis is the Pure Blend 2-pack, which is what’s reflected in the “standard” version of their schedule. Repeat “Week 3” of the Vegetative part of their schedule until the end of the vegetative stage if it lasts longer than 3 weeks. For auto-flowering strains – skip week 3 of “Vegetative” & skip week 6-7 of “Flowering/Fruiting” – otherwise you can follow the instructions almost exactly.

Botanicare Pure Blend Pro Grow is a great nutrient system for marijuana plants in the vegetative stage  PlusBotanicare Pure Blend Pro "Bloom" is an excellent one-part nutrient choice for the marijuana flowering stage

  • Dyna-Gro Grow & Bloom (sometimes called “Superthrive”) <– Cheapest nutrients that still work great for growing cannabis in soil. Use “Foliage-Pro” during the vegetative stage, and “Bloom” during the flowering stage. Just follow the instructions on the bottles!

Dyna-Gro nutrients are cheap but surprising effective at growing good weed.

Dyna-Gro Grow & Bloom has one bottle for the vegetative stage, and one bottle for the flowering stage.

These cannabis plants were grown with Dyna-Gro Grow & Bloom at 1 tsp/gallon (nothing else!).

Example of Dyna-Gro Plants: Strains are Pacific Punch (limited edition strain related to Purple Punch), Amnesia Lemon, and Zweet Inzanity. I grew these plants under a Mars Hydro TSL2000 LED grow light.

Dyna-Gro works for cannabis plants in any grow medium, including soil, coco, or hydro!

Don’t want to use nutrients? Learn how to mix up your own super soil so it has all the nutrients your plants need! Bonus: With composted super soil, you don’t need to worry about maintaining your pH! Instead, you are actually creating a specially made microbial soil mix that will automatically take care of the pH for your plants, while slowly feeding them the exact nutrients they need.

Tips for Growing Cannabis in Soil

  • Low Levels of Nutrients Given Regularly is Much Better Than Giving a Lot of Nutrients at Once!

The most common mistake made by beginners growing cannabis in soil is they water their plants too oftenOverwatering is almost never a case of giving your plants too much water at once. Instead, overwatering cannabis in soil is almost always caused by giving the plant water too often.

Learn how to water seedlings in soil (day-by-day watering schedule).

Never overwater your seedlings again, just use this seedling watering schedule.

Learn how to water your soil-grown cannabis seedlings

How to water adult cannabis plants in soil

  1. Wait until the top of your soil feels dry up to your first knuckle (about an inch deep)

  2. Add nutrients to your water (if needed), then adjust the pH. Most soil growers only add nutrients every other watering, or even less often, but you will always need to adjust the pH of your water.

  3. Start watering your plants and continue to add water until you see at least 20% extra runoff water drain out the bottom of your pot. Go back to step 1.

Hey cannabis growers! We all know how annoying nutrient problems can be. And obviously, the best thing to do for your cannabis plant to prevent growing problems is give them the conditions they need to thrive. But did you know some strains are naturally more resilient than others? Certain genetics are less likely to experience problems. Yes, some special strains can experience sub-optimal conditions and still thrive.

Some cannabis strains make amazing buds even if you make some mistakes.

Some cannabis strains thrive even when things go wrong.

But which ones? These strains typically share some features…

  • Fast-Flowering Strains – Perhaps it’s because they just don’t get enough time to get sick, but fast-flowering plants are often ready to harvest before you start running into significant problems even in sub-optimal conditions.
  • Buds Grow as Nuggets, Not “Colas” – “Cola” is Spanish for tail, some growers use the word cola do describe a long fat bud. Sometimes these types of buds are called “baseball bats” (or in less polite company, “donkey d**ks”). These strains are high-yielding, but also prone to bud rot because they focus energy on producing long, fat colas. And for the purposes of today’s subject, tend to take out literally everything they can from the plant to their own detriment. These strains happily kill themselves to make buds. Which is kind of cool in its own way, but if you’re just looking to get a solid harvest with high bud quality, you’ll find the strains that tend to grow buds as small nuggets tend to thrive and stay healthy while their cola-wielding friends are sucking out every last nutrient as the plant slowly dies around the buds.
  • Stable, Established Strains – Strains that are well-bred to be predictable tend to be more resistant to problems than raw crosses or experimental strains. That’s because breeders often refine their best strains for years to ensure that every batch of seeds grows exactly the same – fast and healthy!
  • Legendary Strains – Some strains become legendary for a reason. Often, it’s because they just have something special to offer. Strains like Blue Dream, Girl Scout Cookies, Bruce Banner, and others were developed over years by home growers and commercial growers together. They’ve stuck around because they are all around great strains, and that’s also why you see they are some prominent in the history of so many new strains. Although not all versions of these legendary strains are great, I’ve found when you get them from a good breeder, they’re more likely to perform above-average than when you’re growing a strain you’ve never heard the name of. I love a strain name like “Candy Pegasus” as much as the next person, but you need to be more wary of brand new strains.
  • Direct-to-Grower Breeders – Strains from breeders that sell directly to customers are often a great choice. I think it’s because they’re also the ones answering questions when growers run into plant problems. The further removed the breeder is from the grower, the less they may be thinking about how plants grow, since breeders are usually growing in ideal conditions. These growers breed only for what the buds are like, and may not “stress test” their plants, unlike breeders who also consider growth patterns. Direct-to-growers breeders pay extra attention to ensure their strains tends to germinate quickly, efficiently use nutrients, grow fast, and never herm. For example, I have found the homegrown strains from Seed Supreme, Seedsman, and MSNL tend to be easy to germinate, fast-growing, and overall resistant to problems.

Looking for some specific recommendations? Let’s explore some hardy cannabis strains that can handle a challenge!

One of the reasons I chose this strain over the others I’ve grown from Seedsman is the outstanding bud quality. Buds tend to grow dense, beautiful, and POTENT. Make sure to wait until buds are totally mature before harvesting for the best bud quality. Not for the faint of heart or casual smokers!

Dirty Unicorn by Dirty Bird Genetics

Why It’s Resilient

  • Fast-Flowering – Typically ready to harvest in about 9 weeks from 12/12.
  • Buds Grow as Nuggets – Buds are dense and sparkly, and produce tight nugs.

Bruce Banner by Seed Supreme

Why It’s Resilient

  • Buds Grow as Nuggets – Dense, tight nugs galore!

A robust strain that can take extra nutrients and warmer temperatures. Great yields, easy to grow, and overall just a pleasure of a plant.

Choosing the right cannabis strain can make a big difference. Hardy strains are known for their ability to thrive in less-than-perfect conditions, which makes them perfect if you’re looking for a consistent harvest with minimal issues. It can help when you opt for fast-flowering strains, those that grow buds as nuggets, stable and established genetics, legendary strains, and those from direct-to-grower breeders. Remember, the best cannabis strains are the ones that give you what you want, how you want it!

Happy growing!

This article shares what House & Gardens says about their own nutrients and supplements. It seems hard to find this information all in one place so I’ve compiled it for you. This is what I found about about these products according to company websites and Amazon product descriptions.

House & Garden nutrients logo

The House & Garden lineup is an expensive but effective line-up for growing cannabis. From a grower: “H&G was started by a top researcher from Canna. They are right outside of Amsterdam and because cannabis is legal there, so both Canna and H&G are able to do R&D using cannabis. I don’t know about Canna, but I know that House and Garden makes all their own nutrients in-house and they work great.”

This cannabis plant was grown using the House & Garden Line-up (Soil A + B as base nutrients, plus the supplements Roots ExceluratorAlgen Extract, Bud XL, and shooting powder)

Incredibly huge cola, wow!  Here's a picture of that cola on the live marijuana plant, just before harvest

The biggest downside of House and Garden (besides price) is it can be hard to find online. Sometimes you can only find this brand at a hydro store, but I’ve included links where you can find them online. Get a custom nutrient schedule directly from the people at House & Garden via their free online nutrient calculator.

Options for Base Nutrients

These are the “base” nutrients for your cannabis plants. With most nutrient companies, you can grow cannabis with just the base nutrients, but House & Garden provides very low levels of nutrients in these bottles, and you need to get at least some of the supplements to ensure your cannabis plants get everything they need. House & Garden Drip Clean - "Keep your equipment, growing media, and plants free of salt buildup" for hydroponic cannabis plants

Official Website Description of House & Garden Drip Clean (June 2024)

Salt buildup has a multitude of downsides. It can inhibit your plants from absorbing nutrients as well as they should, clogs up piping, and forces you to flush thoroughly before harvest — it wastes time AND money. Drip Clean was created to solve this problem. Drip Clean is used with each feeding throughout the grow cycle, keeping salt buildup at bay. This allows your plants to absorb added nutrients at their highest possible rate and cuts your flush time to only about 3-4 days. On top of that, any beneficial microbes you add to your feeding regimen will be unaffected; this is due to Drip Clean’s utilization of ionic bond associations rather than corrosive methods to keep your system clean.

PH Stabilizer

PH Osmosis / Stabilizer – “Maintain pH stability when using reverse osmosis (RO) water.”

House & Garden PH Osmosis / Stabilizer - "Maintain pH stability when using reverse osmosis (RO) water." for growing weed

Official Website Description of House & Garden PH Stabilizer (June 2024)

Keeping your reservoir pH balanced with RO water can be a little tricky. Due to its very low ppm, RO water is prone to dramatic fluctuations when nutrients are added, or even just from exposure to air — that’s why we formulated PH Osmosis/Stabilizer. pH Stabilizer provides the perfect blend of minerals to RO water so it stabilizes pH while not causing any unwanted chemistry. After adding it, you can implement other nutrients without worrying about drastic changes in pH. While some growers use CalMag as a “band-aid” buffer for RO water, it only keeps the pH stable for around 2 days and often includes nitrogen, which you don’t want around during the flowering stage. pH Osmosis/Stabilizer maintains pH stability for up to 10 days, with no added nitrogen and much less potential for nutrient lockout.

Disclaimer: PH Osmosis/Stabilizer works in all growing media and contains no dyes, synthetic PGRs, or detectible heavy metals. In order to maximize activity and shelf life, sealed bottles and containers should be stored between 45 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit (7 to 29 degrees Celsius) and should be used within one year of opening the seal.

Magic Green

Magic Green – “Provides vital nutrients directly to the foliage”

House & Garden Magic Green - "Provides vital nutrients directly to the foliage" for growing cannabis

Official Website Description of House & Garden Magic Green (June 2024)

Magic Green is a product that works well on multiple levels. Primarily, this foliar spray supplies crucial macronutrients to the plant directly through the foliage, when nutrient absorption through the roots is just not doing enough. This can help to “green up” yellowing leaves faster, with noticeable improvement seemingly overnight. Magic Green also acts as a leaf strengthener and provides essential nutrients required throughout your plants life cycle.

Disclaimer: Magic Green works in all growing media and contains no dyes, synthetic PGRs, or detectible heavy metals. In order to maximize activity and shelf life, sealed bottles and containers should be stored between 45 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit (7 to 29 degrees Celsius) and should be used within one year of opening the seal.

Rhizo Force is all-natural and helps create a thriving growing environment for plants, while simultaneously helping to reinvigorate the root zone.

Disclaimer: Rhizo Force contains no dyes, synthetic PGRs, or detectible heavy metals. In order to maximize activity and shelf life, sealed bottles and containers should be stored between 45 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit (7 to 29 degrees Celsius) and should be used within one year of opening the seal.

Magnesium Boost

Official Website Description of House & Garden Magnesium Boost (June 2024)

Magnesium Boost – “Supplies additional magnesium for large-leafed plant varieties”

House & Garden Magnesium Boost for cannabis - "Supplies additional magnesium for large-leafed plant varieties"

Magnesium Boost is perfect for revitalizing your plants when they’re needing a little extra magnesium. It is especially effective for longer vegetative times, and in strains with thicker leaves and certain indica-dominant hybrids. You can usually tell when your plants are deficient when the leaves start turning yellow while the veins stay green — in this scenario, a little magnesium goes a long way. By reinvigorating your plants with Magnesium Boost, you’re increasing the plant’s capacity for photosynthesis, strengthening the chlorophyll and increasing overall vegetative production.

Disclaimer: Magnesium Boost works in all growing media and contains no dyes, synthetic PGRs, or detectible heavy metals. In order to maximize activity and shelf life, sealed bottles and containers should be stored between 45 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit (7 to 29 degrees Celsius) and should be used within one year of opening the seal.

Soil is so simple. So close to nature. Add seeds, remember to water your plants, and wait for an awesome harvest, right? Unfortunately, many growers run into problems with cannabis plants in soil. The culprit is almost always either your environment, watering habits, or nutrients/supplements. We’ve covered environment and watering habits already, so this cannabis soil nutrient tutorial will focus on which soil nutrients and supplements you need to get the results you want.

Recommended Soil Nutrients

Recommended Mineral-Based or Synthetic Soil Nutrients – This isn’t a comprehensive list of great cannabis nutrients, but these are the nutrient system I have experience with and recommend for growing cannabis.

3 bottles at a time – Typically there are 3 bottles for the base nutrients but sometimes only 2. This class of nutrients needs all bottles at all times, which get mixed in different ratios depending on the stage of life. More flexibility to alter ratios throughout the plant’s life.

  • Fox Farm trio for soil (mostly organic with some synthetic ingredients) – This is the first nutrient set I ever used for growing cannabis and I was thrilled with my results. They also offer a starter kit that includes their most popular supplements so you can try the entire nutrient line without having to invest in big bottles of everything.
  • General Hydroponics Flora trio – One of the most popular cannabis nutrient systems. Not just for coco and hydro, it also works great in soil! Follow the instructions on the side of the bottles at half-strength for cannabis plants in soil. This is my go-to nutrient system. Great growth rates, yields, and bud quality.

You can’t go wrong with the Fox Farm trio for soil. Just follow the instructions on the label at half-strength for cannabis plants.

Get Fox Farm soil cannabis nutrients on Amazon - some of the best soil cannabis nutrients

Only 2 bottles at a time (Simple Duos) – Use one bottle for the vegetative stage, and the other bottle for the flowering stage.

  • Dyna-Gro Grow + Bloom – Originally designed for orchids, Dyna-Gro nutrients have proven to work exceptionally well for cannabis plants in soil. If you want professional results without spending a ton of money or having to mix multiple bottles together, these two bottles give your plants everything they need from seed to harvest. The best simple duo in my opinion.
  • FloraNova Grow + Bloom – Cheap and easy with excellent results. The biggest issue I have with these is the liquid is so thick it can be annoying to measure out.
  • Botanicare Pure Blend duo (buy individually Grow + Bloom) – Professional results with the ease of a duo. The Bloom formula is especially great for growing weed.

Dyna-Gro Grow + Bloom is an easy, effective cannabis nutrient system.

If using filtered or RO water (which contains few micronutrients) it’s a good idea to also add a Calcium/Magnesium supplement by the same brand that makes your base nutrients. Cannabis plants go through a lot of Calcium and Magnesium!

  • Dyna-Gro Nutrients – get Mag-ProNote: Don’t use regular Cal-Mag supplements with Dyna-Gro base nutrients as it can result in unwanted interactions.
  • Fox Farm nutrients – get Bush Doctor Cal-MagNote: they’re currently re-branding this supplement from “Gringo Rasta Cal-Mag” to “Bush Master Cal-Mag” and it can be difficult to find right now. If you can’t find the Cal-Mag version by Fox Farm, use Cal-Mag Plus. It won’t cause unwanted interactions with their base nutrients.
  • General Hydroponics nutrients – get CaliMagic
  • Botanicare nutrients – get Cal-Mag Plus

Organic Soil Nutrients

There used to be a ton of organic soil nutrients in bottles (like the now-discontinued GO Box) but many options have disappeared as growers switch to using amended compost for their organic nutrient needs. Why? The organic nutrients in bottles get similar results to mineral nutrients. The biggest difference in organic growing seems to come from using actual compost and/or amended soil.

  • Nature’s Living Soil (super concentrated organic compost nutrient mix) – amend bottom 1/3 of your plant container with this special organic amendment, and plants will be able to slowly use the nutrients “on-demand”. Even if your plants are already growing in soil, you can sprinkle a little of this on top of your soil and water to deliver organic nutrients. Note: smells strongly of manure!
  • Dr. Earth Organic Nutrients – dry nutrients
  • Roots Organics Terp Tea Fertilizer Set (Grow & Bloom) – This dry formula is mixed with aerated water and brewed for 24 hours to create a “tea” for your plants. Can also be used as a top dressing.

Best supplement ingredients for organic growing

  • Sea kelp – a source of K, helps plants resist heat and stress
  • Leonardite – full of humic acids for happy roots, resist stress
  • Protein hydrolysate (contained in many supplements) – helps plants produce big roots and be more resistant towards water stress
  • Potassium Sulfate (also called “Sulfate of Potash”) – the sulfur and potassium promote smells and bud development in the flowering stage

Summary of a Marijuana’s Nutrient Needs in Soil

Now that you’ve seen some suggested marijuana soil nutrients, let’s go through a quick overview of a cannabis plant’s life in soil as it relates to nutrient needs.

Seedlings Have Plenty of Nutrients in Any Soil

Just about any soil potting mix contains enough nutrients for seedlings

When Soil Starts Running Out of Nutrients…

Vegetative Stage

Fast-growing cannabis plants in the vegetative stage uptake way more nutrients than your average houseplant.

Depending on how “hot” your soil was at the beginning (how full of nutrients), plants may start running out of nutrients during the vegetative stage. If you started with a regular soil potting mix, begin adding nutrients when plants are 3-4 weeks old to keep them growing fast and healthy.

Plants want “all-purpose” or “grow” nutrients in the vegetative stage, which are high in all three macronutrients (high NPK). If you started with a big soil container or a hot soil mix like Ocean Forest soil, you may not need to add extra nutrients quite yet. Keep in mind than anytime you get runoff water out of the bottom of the pot, you’re washing away some of the nutrients. Therefore, it’s a good idea to avoid getting runoff unless you plan on adding nutrients in the water.

With many soil mixes, plants run out of nutrients and start growing slowly after a few weeks. When a plant looks lime green all over (especially if bottom leaves are turning yellow and falling off), it needs more nutrients overall. The left plant received plain water and started turning yellow after the soil ran out of nutrients. The right plant has been receiving nutrients in the water and is a nice healthy green color.

Major Deficiencies Appear if You Don’t Add Nutrients

Flowering Stage

Cannabis plants devour nutrients when making buds, especially Phosphorus and Potassium (“PK”).

As a grower, you must prevent nutrient deficiencies in the flowering stage or your bud quality and final yields will suffer. Many soil plants run into major nutrient deficiencies without extra nutrients in the flowering stage.

At this point, you need to do one of three things: add nutrients to the water, apply a top dressing/amendment, or transplant plants to fresh soil.

There’s one exception: If your plant has a “reservoir” of nutrients at the bottom of the pot (for example a bottom layer of heavily amended, composted soil), roots will dip in and take nutrients as needed all the way until harvest. This “super soil” strategy is the best way to grow cannabis plants if you only want to add water.

Example: This flowering cannabis plant has several weeks before harvest, but it’s already losing bottom leaves and turning pale all over. This means the plant wants higher levels of nutrients overall. Without enough nutrients, more leaves will turn yellow and buds will stop getting bigger.

I gave the plant extra “bloom” nutrients (using the GH Flora trio). This reversed the yellowing and buds continued fattening. Here is that plant at harvest.

Plain Water?

  • Harvest – If you’ve been adding nutrients and supplements to the water, it’s often recommended to give plain water for a week or two before harvest to “flush” the plants/buds, though some growers give nutrients until just before harvest. If you’ve been giving plain water from the beginning, nothing for you to do here; just wait until buds look ready and harvest.

Although you want to avoid discolored leaves for most of the flowering stage, it’s normal for leaves to start turning yellow the week before harvest.

Major Takeaways

  • Cannabis plants need a lot of nutrients for a good harvest
  • Nutrients come from either the soil or the water
  • If a plant uses up all the nutrients in the soil, you must add more
  • “Hot” (nutrient-heavy) soil mixes last longer
  • Bigger pots have more soil and therefore last longer
  • Runoff water washes away nutrients in the soil, so avoid runoff if not adding nutrients

How to Add Nutrients:

  • Transplant to fresh soil – a chance to start fresh, but can stress plants
  • Apply top-dressing or an amendment – nutrients flow to the roots when you water the plants
  • Add nutrients in the water – covered in detail above!

Alternative: Create a “reservoir” of nutrients under the soil (“just add water” setup)

But remember the most important factors to stealth growing: “No tell, no smell, no sell.” Never tell anyone, not even your best friend, that you’re growing. Be on top of preventing smells, and never ever sell cannabis. Breaking one of those 3 principles is how 99% of growers get found out!

“What if my plants get sick?”

If you run into problems, our "diagnose your plant" tool with pictures will help you figure out what's wrong! The most common issue a grower runs into is a pH imbalance. Barring that, your marijuana plants likely either have a nutrient deficiency, heat or light stress, or are being attacked by some sort of marijuana mold, pest or bug. Whether you call it weed, cannabis, sinsemilla, skunk, pot, marijuana, or something else, the plant known as Cannabis Sativa is a hardy weed in the wild and can actually be easy to grow indoors at home when you know what to do.

Growing Medical Marijuana

“Medical marijuana” has become a household name. The body of evidence for medical marijuana in the treatment of cancer and other illnesses is growing every day. And for those who need medical marijuana, growing weed indoors is the perfect way to ensure a safe, regular supply of buds, for cheap.

In fact, when you grow weed indoors for personal use, you often end up with way too much. The Grow Weed Easy website will teach you how to grow your own beautiful huge cannabis colas like this one! If you catch the growing bug like I did, and if you start enjoying the process of tending your cannabis garden just for the sake of gardening, you’re going to have to find a way to press, cook, freeze, and concentrate all your extra buds. 🙂

As you probably know, both medical marijuana and recreational cannabis have been decriminalized or legalized in many places around the world and weed is becoming legal in more places every day! Yet there still aren’t many simple indoor “how to grow weed” guides for beginners (even for those who legally grow, such as medical marijuana users and those who live in places where marijuana is legalized for personal use).

Which Cannabis Supplements Are Actually Necessary to Grow Great Weed?

“This is what puzzles me most, is all the cannabis nutrient companies have a “basic” nutrient line and then they have all the “extra” stuff they want you to give the plant to make big better buds. You can read in forums that growers think the extra stuff rocks and other say that it sucks. The companies all claim theirs is the best. I have not seen a study that shows bigger buds are more potent or even healthier. I wonder if it is like when you compare an organically grown apple to a non-organic apple. The Non-organic one is bigger and shiner but the taste and texture (the important things) do not compare to the organic one. Are all the “extra” really better or would the plant be happier without them?”

~ BuddMarsh

There are so many cannabis nutrients and supplements, it's hard to understand which is which, what you need, and what you don't need.

Oooh, this is a great question! So here’s the thing. You don’t need supplements. Cannabis growers only need base nutrients, and that’s it. You can get all the way to harvest with the most amazing and top-quality buds ever, with even cheap base nutrients and nothing else.

However, obviously, it’s more complicated than just that.

One thing I’ll say, and when you talk to growers who have tried a lot of different nutrient lines, you’ll often hear this…

Your environment and growing skill have a MUCH bigger effect on your final results than the specific nutrient system or supplements you use.

Example of cannabis plants growing in a grow tent, full of cannabis buds! Grow tents make great environments for growing weed!

Learn how to grow cannabis in this setup.

I’ve tried several different cannabis nutrient brands and tons of different cannabis supplements. It can be really difficult to tell the difference in results. Experienced growers (especially growers who have done actual testing) usually tell you the same thing, “If your nutrients are growing good weed, they’re good nutrients”. Any quality cannabis nutrients can keep your plants green and fast-growing in the vegetative stage, then produce big clean buds in the flowering stage.

3 Examples of Great Base Nutrients for Cannabis (click to learn more):

Note: Use Nutrients and Supplements from the Same Company

When it comes to nutrients and supplements, it helps avoid problems if you get all your products from the same brand or company. This increases the chance they’ll all “play nicely” together and won’t cause unexpected interactions. So if you get your nutrients from General Hydroponics, try to stick to their supplements. If you get your nutrients from Botanicare, try to stick to their supplements, etc.

If possible, try to get all your nutrients and supplements from the same company.

General Hydroponics Nutrients Flora Trio line plus CaliMagic and PH Down. Mixing cannabis nutrients on the floor.

These Supplements Work for Cannabis Plants

Besides nutrients, there are some supplements that have a well-established use:

Root Rot Prevention (Root Inoculant)

A root supplement like Hydroguard is really important if growing in hydroponics to prevent your roots from being attacked by root rot. But if your plants aren’t being attacked by root rot, it doesn’t really make much difference. There are also other more generalized root-promoting supplements.

Hydroguard is effective at preventing root rot in a hydroponic reservoir.

Botanicare Hydroguard is a bottle of liquid root supplement that helps prevent root rot with growing hydroponic cannabis

Prevent Problems with Purified Water (Cal-Mag Supplement)

You may want to add a Cal-Mag supplement if your water is very “soft” and doesn’t naturally contain a lot of minerals, like if you’re using filtered, reverse osmosis, or distilled water, to prevent Calcium or Magnesium deficiencies. A Cal-Mag supplement replaces some of the minerals that are normally found in water. Cal-Mag also helps stabilize the pH of your nutrient water, which can swing wildly in purified water because it doesn’t have much “buffer”. Cal-Mag is popular for coco growers because cannabis grown in coco coir tends to have somewhat higher Calcium needs. However, if your plant doesn’t need Calcium or Magnesium, adding a Cal-Mag supplement won’t make much difference.

If you’ve got soft or purified water, you may need a Cal-Mag supplement. Most nutrient companies offer some form of Cal-Mag. One popular option is CaliMagic.

CaliMagic is a popular cannabis cal-mag supplement for growing cannabis by General Hydroponics

Stronger Stems & Heat Resistance (Silica supplement)

Silica is often found abundantly in water, but if you don’t have a lot of silica in your water, your plant’s cell walls won’t be nearly as strong. As a result, if your plant is low on silica, it has weaker stems and is more susceptible to heat stress. However, like other cannabis supplements, adding silica when you don’t need it doesn’t make a positive difference. Silica can get deposited in buds, and since it’s actually incorporated in the cell walls, you can’t “flush” it out like some other nutrients. Therefore it’s recommended you stop giving a silica supplement after you see buds start forming. I’m of the opinion that there’s no need to use silica since you can hold plants up with plant yo-yos, tomato cages or stakes. Why put something into the plant (that you know can get deposited in buds but isn’t necessary for healthy growth) if you can use a mechanical solution instead?

Silica supplements can make cannabis plants more hardy and heat resistant, but only use if needed. One popular Silica supplement is Silica Blast.

Silica Blast by Botanicare is a popular silica supplement for growing cannabis

Bud Supplements (PK BoostersBulking Formulas, Shooting Powders, etc.)

These add high levels of P & K. If you’re not giving your plants specially made flowering nutrients, they need another source of extra P and K. So for example, if you are growing in soil and haven’t been adding extra nutrients in the water, a PK booster may be perfect in the flowering stage to make up for what the plant has used up in the soil.

These types of products often contain naturally occurring plant hormones to help stimulate flowering, but those ingredients are not listed on the label. The downside is these hormones can sometimes cause plants to herm or grow male flowers (which can result in seedy buds), though typically that only happens when a strain is already prone to herming. Make sure to avoid synthetic plant growth hormones!

PK BoostersBulking Formulas, and Shooting Powders, Oh my!

Beastie Bloomz is a cannabis flowering supplement PK booster by Fox Farm        Liquid Koolbloom by General Hydroponics is a "Bulking" cannabis flowering supplement with high levels of P & K nutrients       House & Garden Shooting Powder - a single packet - is this a good choice for growing weed?

Do you need Bud Supplements? No!

If you’re using a cannabis nutrient system with great base nutrients, you don’t need any special bud supplements to grow great buds. For beginners, I highly recommend trying a full grow with just base nutrients, so you don’t run into any of the potential side effects that can appear with some bud supplements.

Example: These plants were grown using just Dyna-Gro Grow & Bloom. I used “Grow” for the vegetative stage and “Bloom” for the flowering stage at about 1 tsp/gallon. No supplements whatsoever! Read my guide to using Dyna-Gro nutrients for growing weed including a custom watering schedule for cannabis.

Strains are Pacific Punch (limited edition strain related to Purple Punch), Amnesia Lemon Pie, and Zweet Inzanity. I grew these plants in coco with just Dyna-Gro nutrients under a Mars Hydro TSL2000 LED using 5-gallon fabric pots.

Grown with only base nutrients and no supplements. Check out the full grow journal!

Dyna-Gro works for cannabis plants in any grow medium, including soil, coco, or hydro!

What to Keep in Mind with Cannabis Supplements

So the main theme of supplements is that the ones which make the biggest difference have specific uses for the plant. If the plant doesn’t need it, adding a supplement can sometimes do nothing, or even worse it could hurt your plant. For example, if you add a powerful PK booster when you’re already giving full strength base flowering nutrients, you could burn or even kill your plants.

Don’t Go Overboard: Use Cannabis Supplements for a Specific Reason!

There is no reason to use a ton of supplements in addition to your base nutrients. Too many supplements at once can often cause cannabis problems like nutrient burn, herming, and other unusual symptoms. Try to pick just 1 or 2 of the supplements that seem the most appealing to you, and start slowly. Or simplify your life and grow only with good base nutrients.

The complete General Hydroponics Flora Series nutrient lineup for growing cannabis, by OzBud

This cannabis grower got a root supplement, base nutrients, one flowering supplement, Cal-Mag, and a Silica supplement. This is a lot, but any more would be total overkill!

Then you’ve got supplements that don’t necessarily “fix” a problem, but “enhance.”

Which Supplements “Enhance” Buds or Growth?

  • Sugar and Carbohydrate-based supplements – These claim to increase potency and trichome production, and may increase bulk. However, I’m not 100% certain they add anything but sugar to the buds. The reason I say that is if a grower uses a lot of these types of supplements the plant can start oozing sugar sap. If you taste the sap, it’s sweet and not potent at all. I almost wonder if that extra “weight” is just sugar being stored in the buds and doesn’t necessarily add to the potency. Some of these products, like the Botanicare Sweet Carbo Line, not only include sugar, but also certain terpenes and esters that are stored unchanged in plant buds, giving your buds unique subtle flavors and a generally sweet smell.
  • Other Enhancers – Then there are the more nebulous types of supplements that are meant to give overall improvements. For example supplements with Amino Acids, Vitamins, and other non-essential plant compounds. These are a lot harder to measure the results. I’m sure some of them do what they say, while others are basically snake oil. It’s a lot harder to prove one way or the other with these because it’s difficult to test unless you do a big side-by-side controlled experiment with a bunch of plants. And unfortunately, the industry just hasn’t quite reached that point yet!

Certain supplements may increase potency, smells, and “sparkle” of buds.

Example of cannabis buds that is absolutely drenched in glittery sparkly trichomes.

Improve Smell of Buds

Although I haven’t tried this yet, I’m really intrigued by Botanicare’s Sweet Carbo line. According to Botanicare:

The natural esters in Sweet are easily absorbed by the plant, but are not broken down further once deposited within the plant tissue. This means that as new flowers develop they will contain small amounts of these natural esters which contribute to the overall flavor and aroma of the finished product.

They offer citrusberrygrape, and “raw” (which is just a generally sweet smell). These should be used throughout the flowering stage to help build smell/flavor in the buds as they mature. However, since these contain a small but significant amount of magnesium, they should not be used while flushing during the last 2-3 weeks before harvest. At this point, the smells have already been deposited into the buds. Another cool thing about these supplements is they contain amino acids and some other enhancers, so it’s kind of like getting a lot of different products at once.

The Botanicare Sweet Carbo line offers cannabis supplements to make buds smell like berrygrape, or “raw” sugar (a generally sweet smell). It seems like the original “Raw” version is the most popular. It imparts a sweet smell, but tends to accent the strain’s natural smell as opposed to try to cover it up.

Get Botanicare Sweet Berry cannabis flowering supplement to give cannabis buds a "berry" smell and flavor     Get Botanicare Sweet Grape cannabis flowering supplement to give cannabis buds a "grape" smell and flavor     Get Botanicare Sweet "Raw" cannabis flowering supplement to give cannabis buds a "raw sugar" smell and flavor

A cheap alternative to expensive sugar-based bloom boosting supplements is blackstrap molasses. Giving this to your plants for the last few weeks before harvest can help them get bigger and smell/taste better. It’s not specially made for plants; it’s the regular stuff you’ll find in your kitchen or at the grocery store. Blackstrap molasses adds sugars, amino acids and trace minerals. Unfortunately for hydro growers, anything organic like molasses is not suitable for a hydroponic reservoir! But molasses works great for soil and coco growers 🙂

For last 2-3 weeks before harvest, give 1/2 tsp of Blackstrap Molasses per gallon when watering (for soil or coco coir)

Giving your cannabis plants a little bit of Blackstrap molasses for the last few weeks before harvest may improve both the taste/smell and density of your cannabis buds at harvest

Bloom Enhancers & “Ripeners”

The jury is still out and which is the most effective supplement, but many growers are happy with bloom-promoting supplements that include sources of…

  • amino acids
  • humic acids
  • vitamins
  • trace minerals
  • often contain unlisted ingredients (including natural or synthetic plant growth hormones)

I personally don’t use this type of supplement so I can’t recommend a particular one, but some of the most popular cannabis supplements based on this type of formula include…

Note: When possible, try to get all your nutrients and supplements from the same company. This greatly reduces the chance of getting unexpected reactions between the different products. Some companies don’t “play well” together.

General Hydropnics "Ripen" is a cannabis bud boosting supplement      Botanicare Hydroplex is a cannabis flowering supplement known as a "bloom enhancer"       Fox Farm Chaching is cannabis flowering supplement and bloom enhancer

Mineral vs Organic Nutrients

The biggest difference I’ve noticed has been between nutrients that use mineral sources of nutrients vs organic sources. I feel like (in my experience) the mineral/chemical nutrients tend to get slightly faster vegetative growth and sometimes increased bud potency at harvest. Plants with organic nutrients grow slower in the vegetative stage and tend to produce buds with a stronger/more complex smell at harvest. But the difference is relatively small and you can definitely still get really smelly buds with mineral nutrients, and you can get really potent buds with organic nutrients!

When it comes to bud quality, it’s important to give the right nutrients so that your plant is healthy and vibrant, but other than that I think focusing on the environment (especially maintaining high light levels and proper temperature/humidity) have a much bigger effect on your final bud quality than your specific brand of nutrients or the specific supplements you use!

Cannabis Plants Need Great Nutrients to Thrive

by Nebula Haze

Once you start growing cannabis, figuring out the best nutrients for your setup can be confusing. Let’s start with a few proven cannabis nutrient systems. Dyna-Gro Superthrive Grow & Bloom are probably the cheapest professional cannabis liquid nutrients.

Dyna-Gro Grow & Bloom has one bottle for the vegetative stage, and one bottle for the flowering stage.

My favorite nutrient system I personally use to grow cannabis is the General Hydroponics Flora trio. Plants grow ultra-fast, buds get huge, and potency is always top-tier.

The General Hydroponics Flora Trio are some of the best cannabis nutrients, available on Amazon!

The most popular cannabis nutrients for home growers (based on multiple GrowWeedEasy.com home grower surveys) is the Fox Farm cannabis nutrient trio.

There are many nutrient companies aimed at growing marijuana and each company creates multiple lines of nutrients, fertilizers, and supplements for different purposes. Which specific fertilization requirements do cannabis plants have, and what should you look for when buying nutrients?

So many choices, yet so little information on each bottle! The best way to pick cannabis nutrients is to choose a brand already proven to work great for growing weed.

Hydro store - it's common to see a wall of various cannabis nutrients. Why is the best to grow cannabis though?

Don’t worry, I’m going to break it all down so it’s easy for you to pick the best nutrients for your cannabis growing setup.

Life Stages and Cannabis Nutrient Needs

As a cannabis grower, your goal is to give your plants the nutrients they need, when they need it. There are two main life stages for cannabis plants (vegetative stage and flowering stage), and each stage has different nutrient requirements. The good news? Lots of nutrient companies make great products that work excellently for growing weed; they just use different formulas and blends.

One thing to keep in mind is there are no perfect or “best” cannabis nutrients, because every environment is different, there are some differences between grow mediums, and not all cannabis plants are exactly the same. That’s why you’ll see no two sets of nutrients are exactly the same. That being said, if you get any of the recommended nutrient brands in this article and follow the instructions on how much to give to your cannabis, it will work great for 100% of plants.

If you choose not to use the recommended nutrients below, or are shopping around for nutrients, here’s what to keep in mind.

What Makes Nutrients Different From Each Other?

What’s the difference between cannabis nutrients?

  • Nutrient Ratios – Each brand has different nutrient ratios they believe are optimal for each stage of growth. Essentially, they each have their own “secret sauce” or recipe that they think works best. Note: The 3 numbers on the front of every nutrient bottle are known as “NPK”, which stands for Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), and Potassium (K). These are the 3 nutrients your cannabis plants need the most.
  • Ingredients – Companies use many different combinations of chemical and organic compounds to create cannabis nutrients, and these affect how your plant absorbs nutrients. For example, two nutrient bottles with the exact same nutrient ratios on the label may have somewhat different effects on plants because they use different nutrient compounds. The ingredients also determine whether a particular set of nutrients are considered organic (come from living sources) or synthetic (come from processed minerals).
  • Soil, Coco, or Hydro? – It’s really important to match your growing medium with your nutrients. “Soil” nutrients are different from “Hydroponic” nutrients. Typically, hydroponic nutrients contain everything a plant needs to grow and can be used in any grow medium, while soil nutrients only provide some nutrients and expect your plant to be able to get some trace nutrients from the soil. Coco coir does not contain any nutrients so it is generally considered a type of hydroponics when it comes to making sure you provide complete nutrition through the nutrients. If growing in coco, either choose hydroponic nutrients or nutrients made specifically for coco coir.

This picture shows an example of a full nutrients lineup for growing cannabis. This shows nutrients and supplements by General Hydroponics. Although supplements are nice, you can get all the way to the end of your grow without using any! Your base nutrients is all you need!

What’s the Best NPK Ratio for Cannabis Nutrients?

For the best results, your cannabis needs the following nutrient ratios…

Chart diagram showing the optimal NPK nutrient ratios for growing cannabis or medical marijuana

Where is the NPK information? Most nutrient bottles display 3 numbers, often called N-P-K, which stands for NitrogenPhosphorus and Potassium

Most cannabis nutrient bottles prominently display 3 numbers, called "NPK" which stands for Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium. These numbers tell you the ratio between each of these nutrients in the bottle

Why “K” for Potassium? The atomic symbol of Potassium is “K” from Neo-Latin kalium.

Vegetative Stage (First Phase of Life)

In other words, you want to use a “Vegetative” (high Nitrogen) nutrient formula for the first stage of life known as the vegetative stage. Vegetative nutrients are also sometimes called “General Purpose”, “All Purpose” or “Grow” nutrients. These nutrients contain everything crucial to help cannabis plants grow healthy new green leaves and stems.

What to start giving vegetative nutrients: If using high-quality soil, you can skip vegetative nutrients for the first 3-4 weeks while your plant uses up the nutrients in the soil. Otherwise, you should start with vegetative nutrients around the time your plant opens its first leaves. Give good nutrition from the beginning!

Example of healthy green cannabis plants in the vegetative stage. At this phase of life, cannabis only grows stems and leaves, which requires a lot of Nitrogen!

Flowering Stage (Second Phase of Life)

Use a “Bloom” (low Nitrogen) nutrient formula with plenty of P & K for the flowering stage. Phosphorus tends to increase the number of flowers, while Potassium helps increase the bulk/weight of flowers. Be careful, though because going overboard with either one can burn your plants.

The main thing is to avoid giving too much Nitrogen in the flowering stage after buds have formed. High levels of Nitrogen can discourage bud development and add an unpleasant taste to buds. The too-high levels of Nitrogen is why a general-purpose plant nutrient isn’t a good choice in the flowering stage.

When to start giving flowering nutrients: Start using bloom nutrients after buds start forming. This ensures your plant gets lower levels of Nitrogen and plenty of Phosphorus & Potassium. This combo is crucial to the best cannabis bud development.

Cannabis needs lower N, but plenty of P & K to make big buds in the flowering stage.

Example of a cannabis plant in the flowering stage, growing big fat buds. In order to get the best yields, you need to use flowering nutrients that contain lots of P and K, but low levels of N

In a pinch, nutrients for Shultz “cactus” (often found at Home Depot, Walmart, or gardening centers) or “succulents” can be used in the flowering stage until you get better nutrients, because it contains low amounts of N and plenty of P & K.

Get Schultz Cactus Plus nutrients as an emergency nutrient solution for the cannabis flowering stage, on Amazon.com

Dyna-Gro Superthrive Grow & Bloom are probably the cheapest professional cannabis liquid nutrient option.

Dyna-Gro Grow & Bloom has one bottle for the vegetative stage, and one bottle for the flowering stage.

Note: Don’t use any type of chemical “some-release” nutrients (like fertilizer spikes, or “time-release” Miracle-Gro soil or “slow-release crystals”). They deliver too much N in the flowering stage and buds may not get as big as they could, even if you’re doing everything else right.

Important Tips on Cannabis Supplements

Do your cannabis plants need special supplements to grow great weed? Nope. When I first started growing I thought you needed some kind of magic supplements to grow the best buds. That’s a myth. Base nutrients are all you need to grow great cannabis buds. But supplements do have some uses. For example, supplements can do things like help make cannabis plants more resistant to heat, help their roots thrive in a hydroponic reservoir, and other helpful uses specific to your particular setup.

  • Supplements vs Base Nutrients: Know the Difference. Base nutrients provide all the necessary NPK and micronutrients for healthy growth, which means that supplements are not necessary for cannabis plants to thrive and produce an amazing harvest as long as you use good base nutrients. If you see that the NPK ratios printed on the front of a bottle are really low (like 0.2-0.2-0.1), that is one sign that this product is some type of supplement. Some supplements are helpful for growing weed, but going overboard may cause unwanted reactions or burn your plant. Do you need supplements to grow great weed?
  • Stick to One Nutrient Brand: Use nutrients and supplements from the same company or brand to minimize unexpected interactions. Combining nutrients and supplements from different companies greatly increases the chance of unhappy cannabis plants. It’s also a good idea when changing up your routine to only add one new supplement at a time and watch how plants react before adding anything else new or different. If this is your first grow, try to pick just one or two supplements that appeal to you, or even stick to just base nutrients to simplify things. Talking from experience, it’s easy to go overboard and waste a bunch of money while actually making things worse for plants. Nutrient companies will happily sell you supplements you don’t actually need.

Do you need special cannabis supplements?

Now that you’ve got the basics, let me share some proven examples of cannabis nutrients. After that, if you want to dig deeper, I’ll teach you more about how to pick the best marijuana nutrients for your setup. Let’s go!

General Hydroponics Flora Trio

General Hydroponics

General Hydroponics offers a simple duo with one bottle for the vegetative stage, and one bottle for the flowering stage called FloraNova Grow + Bloom. This nutrient system is cheap, simple, and easy with excellent results in soil/coco/hydro. The biggest issue I have with the duo is the liquid is so thick it can be annoying to measure out.

However, their Flora trio is a winner. A tried and true favorite of mine, the Flora trio works very well for growing cannabis. I’ve had great success with it in every grow medium including soil, coco coir, and hydroponics. I used this nutrient system for almost a decade and have always been thrilled with the results. I’ve been testing new nutrient systems so I can report back to our readers like you, but based on my years of success I know you’ll be happy with the Flora trio. Best for…

  • Soil
  • Coco Coir
  • Hydroponics

·Soil, Coco Coir, or Hydroponics (DWC, Bubbleponics, etc)

General Hydroponics Flora Series Nutrient Trio + (Optional) CaliMagic (add 1 tsp/gallon Hydroguard in hydroponics)

This is personally my favorite nutrients for growing cannabis because it just works. Plants grow fast. Buds come out big and potent. Follow the instructions on the side of the bottle at half-strength for great results in soil or coco. If growing in hydroponics with roots directly in water, use similarly to soil or coco, just make sure to also get Hydroguard to protect your hydroponic roots from root rot.

If you’re using filtered water, it’s also a good idea to use a Cal-Mag supplement to replace some of the minerals that are normally found in water. A Cal-Mag supplement also also adds extra “stuff” to help stabilize the pH of your water, which tends to fluctuate in filtered water since there is not a lot of buffer. Some cannabis growers also add a Cal-Mag supplement as a preventative when growing in coco or using an LED grow light, since both tend to increase the Cal-Mag needs of your plant. However, I’ve found the base nutrients seem to work great by themselves even in coco under LEDs. Ultimately, CaliMagic is optional and many growers get excellent results without it. I used to use it consistently, but I stopped using it once I started using tap water and haven’t noticed any difference. If you do choose to include CaliMagic, it’s used at 1 tsp/gallon.

Fox Farm Nutrient Trio

Fox Farm Logo

The Fox Farm trio is a popular nutrient system for cannabis growers that contains a variety of natural sources for nutrients like earthworm castings and bat guano, which cannabis plants thrive on. Fox Farm’s original nutrients contain too much organic matter for DWC/hydro, which increases the chance of root problems, but all that organic matter is great for plants in a hand-watered environment to enhance smell and flavor of your finished product. Fox Farm offer hydroponics-specific nutrients that don’t contain any organic matter called the “Cultivation Nation trio”, but this trio is not as good as the General Hydroponics Flora trio for growing cannabis, in my experience.

Best for…

  • Soil
  • Coco Coir

Very concentrated, less is more. “Grow Big” & “Tiger Bloom” provide most of the major nutrients your cannabis needs, while “Big Bloom” has many micronutrients and beneficial compounds that help nutrient uptake and root health. This trio works extremely well by itself, just follow the feeding schedule (here’s a PDF, here’s a JPG) from Fox Farms at half-strength to start.

Fox Farms Nutrient Trio for Hydroponics & Bushdoctor Cal-Mag (Fox Farm’s version of Cal-Mag)

Use the “hydro” version of Fox Farms nutrients when growing in coco coir. Two bottles are the same as the soil trio, but the “Grow Big” bottle is formulated slightly differently for a soilless grow. For example, it contains extra levels of micronutrients that are normally found in the soil. Follow the feeding schedule (here’s a PDF, here’s a JPG) from Fox Farms at half-strength to start. Generally, the Fox Farms nutrient system will prevent Cal-Mag deficiencies, but it’s good to have extra Cal-Mag on hand just in case whenever growing cannabis in coco coir, if using filtered water, or if growing with LED grow lights.

·Hydroponic version

Fox Farms Cultivation Nation Trio (Micro, Grow, Bloom) & Cal-Mag

This is a Fox Farm copy of the General Hydroponics Flora Trio. It has the exact same nutrient ratios and the exact same ingredients as the General Hydroponics Flora trio. I’ve used it with good results over 2 different grows, though I personally prefer the Flora trio because the Cultivation Nation bottles tended to leak if the bottle was tipped over. A leaking bottle means that air is getting in, which will cause your nutrients to go back more quickly. I also noticed these nutrients tend to crystalize, while the Flora trio nutrients always are fully liquid.

I recommend getting General Hydroponics Flora trio instead of the Cultivation Nation trio. The Flora trio is cheaper and the nutrients are better.

Botanicare

Botanicare Logo

Botanicare is a great company that’s been around for as long as I’ve been growing, and whose supplements I’ve been using for years (specifically, their Hydroguard supplement is the most effective thing I’ve used to prevent root rot in a hydroponic setup). Best for…

  • Soil
  • Coco
  • Hydroponics

Get the duo: Grow, Bloom

Use “Grow” in the vegetative stage, and “Bloom” in the flowering stage. Simple! I wish there were more nutrient systems formulated to be used that way. This duo is listed as “Premium natural and organic based plant food”. That means there are both organic ingredients and non-organic ingredients.

The company claims this duo is usable in coco, but I’ve only seen growers use it in soil. The name is “Soil Formula” after all. It it is missing a lot of extra micronutrients that would be found in soil but are not found in coco coir.  Botanicare recommends adding their Cal-Mag Plus if growing in coco, as it adds extra Nitrogen, Calcium, Magnesium, and Iron, but it is still missing some micronutrients like copper and manganese. If you’re looking for a one-part nutrient system that works well in coco coir, I recommend getting Dyna-Gro Foliage Pro + Bloom (more info below).

Note: As of April 2024, growers are reporting new bottles of the Bloom Soil formula have different ingredients than before. Check out this picture of the new label Botanicare Pure Blend Pro Bloom Soil Formula label with ingredients (front label for reference) by grower Ben in April 2024, which shows most ingredients are minerals with kelp as the only organic ingredient. Here’s the old label that used to have the main ingredients of fish meal, composted seabird guano, kelp, and then mineral ingredients. This doesn’t mean the new formula is necessarily better or worse, but it seems to be different. Check back for updates as we learn more.

Get the trio: Base, GrowBloom (need all 3 bottles for all phases of growth)

The three bottles are all that’s needed to get your plants successfully to harvest time, just follow the feeding schedule from Botanicare [PDF], starting at half the recommended strength. If growing in hydroponics, Hydroguard is an important root supplement that will help prevent your plant from getting root rot in a hydroponic reservoir. The KIND series has been highly recommended by several hydro growers I know in real life and Botanicare makes the best root supplement I know of for hydroponics.

From a grower: “Botanicare KIND is like the opposite spectrum [of the Botanicare Pure Blend series]. The Base is just Nitrogen and Calcium. Grow and Bloom both have most of the minerals in them, along with things like sea kelp. The Bloom is also 0-6-6. Grow at 2-2-4. So quite literally you can call the shots on Nitrogen and Calcium. That level of control hasn’t been around a great deal in our market. For the savvy grower, this is a pretty nice tool.”

House & Garden – Often difficult to find online!

House & Garden nutrients logo

The House & Garden lineup is an expensive but effective line-up.

The biggest downside of House and Garden (besides price) is it’s getting harder to find online. This brand is often best purchased in person at a hydro store. Get a custom nutrient schedule directly from the people at House & Garden via their free online nutrient calculator.

From a grower: “Canna is a Dutch company and one of the best IMO. They make a great product line for growing in coco coir and test their products on real cannabis plants.”

Another grower said, “Canna products are one of the only nutrient lines to be developed primarily for cannabis (and tested on live plants). They’ve been doing so for almost 30 years. Cost is a little higher than competitors but worth every penny.”

A different grower added, “Canna – I have only used their coco line, but it is the highest quality you will find.”

Dyna-Gro

Dyna-Gro logo (nutrient company)

Originally designed for orchids, Dyna-Gro nutrients have proven to work exceptionally well for cannabis plants. If you want professional results without spending a ton of money or having to mix multiple bottles together, this combo gives your plants everything they need from seed to harvest. Dyna-Gro nutrients are suitable for any growing medium including soil, coco, or hydro.

  • Works great in Soil, Coco or Hydroponics

-Dyna-Gro / Superthrive (Foliage Pro + Bloom) – Use “Foliage Pro” in the vegetative stage and “Bloom” in the flowering stage.

Note: Dyna-Gro was recently purchased by a company called Superthrive. As a result, some nutrient bottles say “Dyna-Gro” and some say “Superthrive”. Confusing, but as long as they’re called “Foliage Pro” and “Bloom” they are the exact same nutrients and work just as well for growing cannabis.

Dyna-Gro Foliage Pro + Bloom is my recommended nutrient system for newbies. One bottle for the vegetative stage, one for the flowering stage. Super simple!

5 Honorable Mentions for Cannabis Nutrients

I don’t have personal experience with these nutrient brands, but they are popular for growing cannabis.

Advanced Nutrients

Advanced Nutrients is a popular nutrient company for growing cannabis plants

One of the more expensive cannabis nutrient brands. Their 3-part base nutrients are all you need to produce great yields and excellent buds, and this part is reasonably priced. However, Advanced Nutrients offers a ton of additional supplements to choose from. Here is an eye-popping $600 starter pack that includes multiple items from their lineup. Just remember, supplements are not necessary to produce great weed (and the truth is, they’re mostly water).

My friend Santacabrera swears by the Advanced Nutrients lineup for his autoflowering plants.

Jack’s Nutrients

Jack's Nutrients are a great cheap choice of nutrients for growing weeed

Their main sell is they offer cheap dry nutrients that last forever. You get a lot for a little money. Supposedly their nutrients can be used in any grow medium but I’ve mostly seen it used for growing cannabis in soil. I know several cannabis growers that swear by Jacks. The cannabis growers I’ve spoken to use Classic 20-20-20 ($14) in the vegetative stage, and Blossom Booster 10-30-20 ($14) for the flowering stage.

I decided to do a little more research and wrote to Jacks Nutrients directly and about what they recommended for cannabis plants. This is what I asked, “Which Jacks Nutrients products do you recommend for growing cannabis?” and this is what they said.”Have you ever tested your water quality before? If not, you can find more information about our lab here. 20-20-20 and 10-30-20 are great formulas for gardening but are not the best choices for cannabis. Our 321 line is usually the best fit without a water test because it offers the most flexibility due to its 3-part system. Here is a copy of the schedule [PDF] for reference, but you can also find more information on 321 here.” The representative encouraged cannabis growers to write them directly with questions using the contact form at the bottom of their website home page.

However, their 321 line somehow costs $170 instead of the total of $28 for the ones I’ve seen cannabis growers actually. I’ve never heard of a cannabis grower using the 321 Line. On top of all that, I see that they still recommend using Blossom Booster 10-30-20 ($14) for the crucial flowering stage, which is the time where nutrients matter the most. I personally believe there is no reason or benefit to their ultra-expensive nutrients, and if you do want expensive nutrients, to go for a company that’s more proven in the cannabis cultivation world.

I’ve seen cannabis growers use Classic 20-20-20 in the vegetative stage, and Blossom Booster 10-30-20 for the flowering stage.

Mega Crop by Greenleaf Nutrients

Mega Crop by Greenleaf Nutrients logo

Mega Crop is supposedly for all grow mediums, it’s marketed as an all-in-one solution that gives complete nutrition from seed to harvest. However, I have been hesitant to try it because I know that cannabis plants seem to grow bigger buds when getting special nutrient ratios during bud formation (specifically cannabis plants in the flowering stage respond well to more Phosphorus and Potassium, with less Nitrogen). However, Mega Crop is extremely popular and many growers swear by it.

The idea of having an all-in-one solution is intriguing, and I’ve seen many examples of great harvests. Mega Crop definitely can grow great weed from what I’ve seen, but I still have a few reservations and haven’t personally used it yet.

Technaflora

Technaflora makes great cannabis cultivation nutrients

Supposedly for all grow mediums, though I haven’t tried it yet on cannabis plants. This one is popular because it supposedly uses “only the finest raw materials”. I’ve seen many growers get great results with it for growing weed.

They sell a popular “Recipe for Success” Starter Kit so you can try out the full lineup for only $55.

Nectar for the Gods

Nectar for the Gods, popular cannabis nutrients and supplements for soil growers

Another option that seems to shine for cannabis plants in soil. It is an organic, calcium-based line that is designed to “bind and carry nutrients into the root system” for plants to use. The company says it is most available to cannabis plants in the pH range of 6.2-6.8. Considering it uses organic ingredients, it shouldn’t be used in a grow that gives water via sprayers or misters as the ingredients can clog an irrigation system. An expensive nutrient option, but well-proven to grow excellent organic cannabis. It used to be a one-part nutrient system for soil, but now you need several bottles of different things. My biggest issue with it is the whole line seems kind of confusing and hard to know what is what.

One Last Tip…

When using a complete nutrient system like the ones listed above, always start at half the recommended strength by the manufacturer, and only increase nutrient levels if your plant is getting pale. If you’re giving too low levels of nutrients, the entire plant will start to appear overall pale or lime green. If you have a different nutrient deficiency (diagnose your plant here), chances are it’s caused by incorrect pH, not by too-low levels of nutrients.

It’s a good idea to always start at half the manufacturer’s recommendation! Most nutrient companies recommend way too much for growing cannabis!

Why not keep adding more and more nutrients? Doesn’t more equal better? No, nutrients are more like a multivitamin than food. After your plant has enough nutrients, adding more gives you diminishing returns, and too much starts causing the following problems.

A cannabis plant turns pale all over (left) when it needs higher levels of nutrients overall. If plant is a healthy green (right), stick to half the recommended dose.

Left plant needs more nutrients (pale green) while right plant is healthy (hunter green)

Too high levels of nutrients causes…

  • Nutrient burn – nutrient burn causes tips of leaves and edges of buds to appear burned. It isn’t a huge deal but doesn’t look as pretty, especially if it gets bad enough to spread to your buds.
  • Random nutrient deficiencies and lockout
  • Buds don’t grow as big as they could have in the flowering stage, especially if levels of Nitrogen are too high
  • Leaf discoloration may spread to the sugar leaves on the buds (not a big deal, but not pretty either)

If you see nutrient burn, it usually means you gave your plants too high levels of nutrients.

Cannabis nutrient burn causes the tips to get brown/burnt, dry, and may even start curling if it gets bad!

Important! The Best Cannabis Nutrients Aren’t Enough!

Crucial Piece of Information; Check the pH of your water to plants to prevent nutrient deficiencies

It may surprise you that the most common reason growers get nutrient deficiencies is because the pH is too high or too low. This happens even if the right amounts of nutrients are present because your weed simply cannot absorb the nutrients if the pH isn’t in the correct range.

Optimum cannabis pH for..

Soil: 6.0 – 7.0
Coco Coir: 5.5 – 6.5
Hydroponics: 5.5 – 6.5

Checking the pH will make a huge difference to your grow by keeping plants vibrant and healthy. It only takes a few minutes each time you water your plants! If you get a digital pH pen, it only takes seconds to test your pH!

Organic vs Chemical (Synthetic) Nutrients

This is a common question we get at Grow Weed Easy: Are organic nutrients better than chemical nutrients? It’s not a matter of which one is better, because they’re good at different things.

Organic Nutrients

  • Bud Smell & Taste – Many growers believe organically grown cannabis will create the most fragrant and “smoothest” buds. Some of the best benefits to smell and taste seem to come from using composted soil that’s been amended with nutrients from natural sources. This creates a living soil with colonies of beneficial microorganisms and is often associated with a bolder taste and smell in buds. However, watering your plants with liquid nutrients that just happen to be organic tends to get results similar to synthetic or mineral-based nutrients. It seems to be the soil that makes the difference when it comes to organic growing.
  • More Natural – Especially when growing in a living soil, you’re creating a home for your roots that is as close to nature as possible (only better because you’re making sure your plant gets everything it needs!)
  • Not for Hydroponics – Organic nutrients are not the best choice for hydroponic systems because any organic matter can cause unwanted stuff to grow in your reservoir. It’s possible to grow organic hydro but let me just say this: as of yet, I’ve never seen organic hydroponics go well for someone, though I wouldn’t mind being proven wrong 😉

Recommended Organic Nutrients

There used to be a ton of organic soil nutrients in bottles (like the now-discontinued GO Box) but many options have disappeared as growers switch to using amended compost for their organic nutrient needs. Why? The organic nutrients in bottles get similar results to mineral nutrients. The biggest difference in organic growing seems to come from using actual compost and/or amended soil.

Best supplement ingredients for organic growing

  • Sea kelp – a source of K (potassium), helps plants resist heat and stress
  • Leonardite – full of humic acids for happy roots, resist stress
  • Protein hydrolysate (contained in many supplements) – helps plants produce big roots and be more resistant to water stress
  • Potassium Sulfate (also called “Sulfate of Potash”) – the sulfur and potassium promote smells and bud development in the flowering stage

My favorite organic supplement contains all of the above: Floralicious Plus

Organic cannabis growing is rewarding!

Chemical Nutrients (including synthetic and mineral-based nutrients)

  • Possibly Increased Potency – While organic nutrients may increase the smell and taste of buds, chemical nutrients tend to increase the potency.
  • Faster Growth and Bigger Yields – Synthetic nutrients provide nutrients to plants in the most easy-to-absorb forms possible. This results in somewhat faster growth and improved yields since the nutrients don’t need to be broken down in the soil by a colony of microorganisms before they become available to your plant.
  • Only Choice for Hydro – These are the best cannabis nutrients for hydroponic systems because they are less likely to cause stuff to grow in the water reservoir. However, chemical nutrients can also be a great choice for soil or coco because of the increased potency and faster growth!
  • Easier to Get Nutrient Burn – Although you can give cannabis plants nutrient burn with organic nutrients, it’s much easier to give them nutrient burn with chemical nutrients. This is due to the easily absorbable nature of these nutrients. Synthetic nutrients get taken up by your roots whether the plant needs them or not.

The General Hydroponics Flora trio is a synthetic nutrient that’s so effective it was used by NASA to grow plants in space!

Don’t want to use nutrients at all? Learn how to compost your own super soil (or buy super soil pre-made online)! Super soil compost contains all the nutrients your plant will need from seed to harvest so you just need to add water. As an added bonus, with composted super soil you rarely need to worry about maintaining your pH. Instead, the composting process develops a colony of microorganisms in your soil that will automatically take care of the pH for your plants to an extent (like in nature), while slowly providing nutrients on demand.

Super soil compost has been amended so no additional nutrients are needed. Just add water!

Can I create my own nutrient system?

Creating a nutrient system is more complicated than just adding “Nitrogen,” “Phosphorus” and “Potassium” plus all the various micro-nutrients in certain ratios. There several different chemical compounds that provide each of these nutrients and they’re not all equal.

What Makes Nutrients “Good” or “Bad” for Growing in Coco Coir?

When growing cannabis in coco coir, you don’t necessarily need nutrients made specifically for coco. Just about any quality cannabis nutrients made for hydroponics (and some nutrients made for soil) will work great, especially if you use a Cal-Mag supplement. This article will teach you what to look for when choosing coco nutrients for your marijuana plants.

There are coco-specific nutrients, which we’ll go over today, but any cannabis nutrients made for hydroponics will work with coco coir, especially if you add a Cal-Mag plant supplement (coco-grown plants crave lots of Calcium!).

Example of a marijuana plant in the flowering stage that was grown in coco coir. Just about ready to harvest!

I personally like the General Hydroponics Flora trio plus Calimagic (a Cal-Mag supplement) for growing in coco coir.

This is a tried and tested nutrient system for any type of hydroponic growing including coco coir. You can actually follow their nutrient schedule listed on the included nutrient schedule; it’s formulated for plants like cannabis.

General Hydroponics Flora trio - includes all your base nutrients!PlusGeneral Hydroponics CaliMagic Cal-Mag supplement

Generaly Hydroponics pH Test kit

Note: After adding nutrients (or even if you’re giving just plain water), always pH your water to 5.5-6.5 before giving it to your plants. This is important!

Give nutrients at half-strength to start

Like nearly all cannabis nutrients, the included schedule is aggressive and can burn your plants if given at full strength. No matter what nutrient system you’re using with your coco coir, I always recommend cutting the amount of nutrients in half compared to what you see on the bottle or from the company, and only raising the amount if the plant is started to get pale or llime green colored (which is a sign it needs higher levels of nutrients).

Tips on giving the right nutrient strength

  • Give lower nutrient levels the more often plants get watered. Example: If watering your plants every day, half-strength nutrients are usually plenty. You’re constantly adding nutrients to the “system”.
  • Give higher nutrient levels if plant is watered infrequently. Example: If you have small plants in a big pot of coco (like a seedling in a 5-gallon pot), chances are you only need to give a little water every several days in order to prevent plants from getting overwatered. In this case, give nutrients at full strength. Remember, plants in coco only get the nutrients you provide in the water. If you’re not giving water often, it means you are not adding many nutrients to the “system” at a time so need a higher dose.
  • Always look at plants to see what they need! Plants tell you what they want. The picture below shows what cannabis plants look like when they’re getting low nutrients vs the right amount of nutrients.

Guide to whether you need to increase the amount of nutrients you’re giving to plants

Most of this plant’s leaves are a dark hunter green. Dark leaves mean the nutrient dose is too high and should be reduced. Although not really a problem in the vegetative stage, this excess suppresses bud growth in the flowering stage (buds don’t get as big as they could).

Test the pH to prevent nutrient deficiencies

Whenever using liquid nutrients, you will need a way to test pH so your plant roots are able to easily absorb all the nutrients they need. I use a simple General Hydroponics pH test kit. Learn more about managing pH here: https://www.growweedeasy.com/ph

How much Cal-Mag should I use for coco coir?

Give Cal-Mag at full strength alongside your nutrients until the plant stops growing new leaves and stems, which is typically during the second half of the flowering stage. At that point, either cut the dose in half or stop giving altogether as the plant is no longer using as much.

Here are some additional nutrient suggestions for growing in coco coir:

Nutrient Picks For Growing in Coco Coir

General Hydroponics CaliMagic Cal-Mag supplementOften when growing cannabis in coco coir, it is helpful to supplement with extra Calcium and Magnesium as calcium deficiencies & magnesium deficiencies are relatively common in coco coir. There are many supplements that provide a boost of these nutrients, and pretty much all of them will work fine. A commonly seen one called “Cal-Mag” by Botanicare works well (and is pretty inexpensive), and so does “CaliMagic” from General Hydroponics. Coco coir is an excellent growing medium as long as you maintain the pH between 5.5 – 6.5 and make sure the plants have enough calcium and magnesium.

Any quality cannabis nutrients made for hydroponics will work well for growing in coco coir as long as you also use a Cal-Mag supplement.

General Hydroponics Flora trio - includes all your base nutrients!

I personally like the General Hydroponics Flora trio plus Calimagic (a Cal-Mag supplement) for growing in coco coir. This is what I use for my coco coir grow. You can follow the nutrient schedule provided by GH as long as you provide plain water every other watering. Or…

Here’s the custom Flora Series + CaliMagic nutrient schedule I use for coco coir [PDF]

You don’t need any other nutrients to grow marijuana; the Flora trio + Cal-Mag will give your cannabis plants what they need to flourish through the vegetative and flowering stages.

For the easiest coco coir growing, get a smart pot (pot made out of fabric – they work perfectly for growing cannabis and have good drainage).

  • Canna Coco A + B & Cal-Mag <– This cannabis-specific nutrient line is a fan favorite for growing in coco coir and has many dedicated followers. From a grower: “Canna is a Dutch company and one of the best IMO. They make a great product line for growing in coco coir and test their products on real cannabis plants.” Another grower said, “Canna products are one of the only nutrient lines to be developed primarily for cannabis (and tested on live plants). They’ve been doing so for almost 30 years. Cost is a little higher than competitors but worth every penny.”
  • Get a custom nutrient schedule from Canna or use this pre-made one [JPG].

  • Fox Farms Nutrient Trio for Hydroponics & Cal-Mag <– Very concentrated, less is more. This is what I used for my first few coco coir grows, and I was very happy with my results. Generally the Fox Farms nutrient system will prevent Cal-Mag deficiencies, but it’s good to have extra Cal-Mag on hand just in case whenever growing cannabis in coco coir.

  • House & Garden Line-up (expensive yet remarkably effective) Coco A + B, Roots ExceluratorAlgen Extract, Bud XLshooting powder <– Get a custom nutrient schedule directly from the people at House & Garden via their free online nutrient calculator. I’ve never really heard a complaint about this line, and when I visit the local hydro stores, this is the nutrient line often gets recommended as the “high end”. From a grower: “H&G was started by a top researcher from Canna. They are right outside of Amsterdam and because cannabis is legal there, so both Canna and H&G are able to do R&D using cannabis. I don’t know about Canna, but I know that House and Garden makes all their own nutrients in house and they work great.”

  • Botanicare Pure Blend for Hydro (Grow + Hydro Bloom) & Cal-Mag <– Botanicare is a trusted company and this line has been a popular nutrient for growing cannabis for years. I’ve seen growers get good results with it, but I’ve never tried this line myself. That being said, I have used their Cal-Mag product with great success, and their Hydroguard is an essential root supplement for me when growing in hydroponics.

What makes Coco Coir nutrients “good” or “bad?”

In other words, why are some nutrients better than others for growing cannabis in coco coir? What kind of coco nutrients need to be avoided when growing marijuana? Do you need expensive nutrients to get good results, or will cheap nutrients get the job done?

With all the different bottles of marijuana nutrients out there, how do you know which one is best for your coco coir growing setup?

Example of a complete hydroponic nutrient lineup - in this case it's the entire General Hydroponics Flora trio nutrient system

When it comes to choosing nutrients for growing weed in coco coir, there are a few considerations that are really important!

Best Nutrients for Coco

  • Example of growing marijuana plants in coco coir - it's so easy to succeed in this setup!Nutrients that are specifically made for coco or hydroponics tend to be the easiest to work with
  • Coco does well with either mineral nutrients or organic nutrient sources. With mineral (hydro) nutrients the plants tend to grow bigger and faster because the nutrients get delivered to the plant in the most efficient form. It’s often said that organic nutrients result in buds with a more complex smell, but organic-grown plants are a little slower to grow. Both types of nutrients produce very high-quality weed, and any differences in the final product are relatively small and often very hard to pin down. In our growing forum, the side-by-side grow tests with organic vs hydroponic nutrients have given inconclusive results as far as bud quality! The most important thing to pay attention to when growing in coco is good watering practices and paying attention to pH.
  • Contains rich sources of micro-nutrients (to make up for what might have been found in the soil)
  • Optimum NPK ratios (more info below)

Poor Nutrients for Coco

  • Made specifically for soil, especially if you look on the back and don’t see Magnesium, Calcium, Sulfur and other micronutrients on the label. A lot of soil-made nutrient systems will work for cannabis, but they often skip out on micronutrients which would normally be found in soil, but might not be available in coco coir. If you’re using filtered or RO water, it’s even more important to use nutrients designed for hydro or coco since there will be basically zero traces of other nutrients in the water.
  • Low in Calcium – Cannabis is prone to Calcium deficiencies when growing in coco coir unless you supplement with extra Calcium and Magnesium (it’s important to always add Calcium and Magnesium at the same time because they rely on each other and too much of one will cause a nutrient problem with the other). Most coco-specific nutrients already have high levels of Calcium, but it’s also really common to add a Cal-Mag supplement to your regimen when growing weed in coco coir to add extra calcium just in case. Any Cal-Mag supplement will work, but it’s always good to get a Cal-Mag supplement from the company who makes your nutrients jf available. Sticking with the same company for all your nutrients helps ensure they will be compatible with each other.

You can learn a lot about nutrients by looking at the label!

Example of looking at the back of a cannabis nutrient bottle to learn more about the ingredients and the ratio of nutrients to each other

Optimum NPK Ratios for Coco Cannabis Nutrients

N-P-K stands for Nitrogen-Phosphorus-Potassium, which are the three most important plant nutrients. These are what the 3 numbers listed on the front of all nutrient bottles stand for (Potassium is represented by “K” because chemists use the symbol K in the periodic table for potassium).

So what are the optimum NPK values for growing cannabis in coco? It depends on the plant’s stage of life (N-P-K are the 3 numbers on the front of nutrient bottles, like this)

Most cannabis nutrient bottles prominently display 3 numbers, called "NPK" which stands for Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium. These numbers tell you the ratio between each of these nutrients in the bottle

In order to get the best results growing cannabis in coco, it’s important to give the right ratio of these crucial nutrients so the plant gets what it needs at the right time. For example, if you give too much Nitrogen in the flowering/budding phase, it actually surpresses bud production and reduces your yields even if the plant is completely healthy! You don’t want that!

The most important thing is high Nitrogen in the vegetative stage, and low Nitrogen in the flowering stage

Optimal Coco Coir Cannabis N-P-K Nutrient Ratios
Life Stage N P & K
Vegetative/Grow High Medium or High
Flowering/Bloom Low Medium or High

Cannabis plants grown in soil are not that picky about P & K. As long as there is an abundance of each, the exact ratio isn’t as important as the amount of Nitrogen compared to the others. Additionally, coco nutrients should always include….

  • Magnesium
  • Calcium
  • Iron
  • Sulfur

Nice but not necessary micro-nutrients (these are contained in most water sources, but if using RO or very soft water you definitely want to add these nutrients to prevent possible nutrient deficiencies)

  • Boron
  • Cobalt
  • Copper
  • Manganese
  • Molybdenum
  • Zinc

The main difference between NPK ratios for coco and soil are….

  • Coco nutrients usually contain more micro-nutrients (in trace amounts), to make up for what the plant would have been able to find in the soil
  • Soil nutrients tend to have higher levels of Phosphorus, because microorganisms in the soil (as well as clay “colloidal” particles) can ‘steal’ some of it

When set up right with good nutrients, coco can produce some beefy buds!

Coco coir does really well with auto-flowering marijuana strains, and can produce some beefy buds!

Optimum pH of 5.5-6.5 <—- Sooooo important in coco

No matter which nutrient brand you’re using, even with chelated nutrients, cannabis roots are better able to absorb some chemical forms of nutrients than others. This is where pH comes into play. When the pH at the roots is too high or too low, it actually changes the chemical form of the individual nutrient compounds, making it more difficult for your plant to absorb the nutrients it needs.

With coco cannabis nutrients, they’re designed to be most available to your plant when the pH is between 5.5-6.5. If you let the pH get higher or lower than this, you will start getting nutrient deficiencies even if literally everything else is dialed in!

Learn how to adjust your pH to prevent nutrient deficiencies
(It’s easy! It’s kind of like a supplement you add to your reservoir to get better growth)

Adjusting your pH only takes a few minutes, and your cannabis garden will thank you!

Stay skeptical of companies that say their nutrients will “automatically” adjust the pH of your water. Although some nutrient systems may be better than others at stabilizing pH, you still need to check the pH regularly if you want to get the best results in coco. Seriously, this is really important!

Depending on your starting water, “PH Perfect” nutrient systems sometimes aren’t able to correct the pH to the right levels, at least not consistently throughout the grow.

This could happen for various reasons. For example your source water likely contains minerals and other “stuff” that will change the pH of your water. If you start with highly purified water instead of tap water, it can actually make pH swings worse because there is no “buffer” in pure water to stabilize pH.

Plus, the amount of nutrients you use changes depending on your plant and its stage of life, and changing the nutrient levels will almost always change the pH, too!

If you check the pH and it’s in the right range, that’s perfect and there’s nothing else you need to do. But don’t skip checking the pH just because the bottle says you don’t have to!

At the very least, make sure pH is the first thing you check if you start seeing nutrient problems!

What Does "Organic" Mean?

If you've ever wondered what people are talking about when they refer to growing "organic" cannabis, what they mean is that everything used to grow the plant was derived from living things. This means that substances such as chemical salts, synthetic fertilizers and inorganic pesticides are never used as part of the growing process.

What Does “Organic” Mean?

If you’ve ever wondered what people are talking about when they refer to growing “organic” cannabis, what they mean is that everything used to grow the plant was derived from living things. This means that substances such as chemical salts, synthetic fertilizers, and inorganic pesticides are never used as part of the marijuana growing process.

Organic cannabis is grown with soil and nutrients that are derived only from living things.

This Papaya marijuana plant was grown in living soil, giving the buds the best smell and taste possible

In nature, cannabis is almost always grown in purely organic conditions, and many growers want to re-create that same natural environment indoors.

However, if you really want to copy nature as closely as possible, you have to do more than just buy organic nutrients and organic soil. Although you will get great results using regular organic soil with organic nutrients, the best taste and smell benefits come from growing cannabis in “living” soil.

“Living” Soil is a Solid Path to the Best Cannabis Bud Taste & Smell

Example of bright green and purple cannabis buds which have the best smell!

Living soil is overflowing with colonies of beneficial microorganisms and microfauna (including bacteria, fungi, protozoa and nematodes) which create a complex and interwoven soil food web.

These tiny creatures break down nutrients in the soil, making them easier for roots to absorb. In return, the plant excretes substances at the roots which feed the soil colony. This symbiotic relationship is the basis of True Organic Gardening! When these organisms are missing from the soil, it’s more difficult for your plant to get the nutrients it needs.

The organisms which colonize living soil actually “hand-deliver” nutrients directly to your plant roots, just like in nature!

Although cannabis growers don’t yet fully understand exactly why, plants grown in living soil seem to produce buds with a stronger and more complex taste and smell profile than plants grown in regular soil or hydro.

Will Any Organic Soil Work to Strengthen the Smell of Buds?

Living soil is usually organic, but not all organic soil is “living”. Soil generally needs to be composted for a few months so the beneficial microorganisms have time to colonize and start breaking down the nutrients in the soil.

When buying regular potting soil at the store, chances are it hasn’t been recently composted. There’s also the chance it has been baked or otherwise processed to kill any bugs or eggs, which sterilizes the soil but it leaves it without any beneficial microorganisms.

Luckily, you can buy freshly composted soil that has been amended specifically for plants like cannabis (here’s a tutorial using Nature’s Living Soil concentrate plus Coco Loco soil). Composted and amended soil is sometimes referred to as “Super Soil” and generally only needs water for plants to flourish. The microorganisms take care of almost everything else!

This soil may look inert, but at the microscopic level, it is alive with millions of organisms!

This picture displays what "good" cannabis soil look like - it should be rich yet almost fluffy

Note: Although cannabis-formulated living soil takes care of delivering nutrients for you, it can’t produce nutrients from scratch. If a cannabis plant is left in a container for too long (or is grown in a small container), it may start to use up all the nutrients in the soil. When this happens, growers can supplement their living soil with organic nutrients in some form, including compost “tea” or bottled nutrients. Other growers may simply transplant to a different pot with fresh soil after their plant starts using up what’s in its original container!

As plants get bigger, you may eventually need to either supplement them with extra nutrients or transplant them to fresh soil

Example of vegetative cannabis plants that are being grown in composted and amended super soil from Kind Soil

When it comes to choosing whether to go with regular organic nutrients vs living soil, here are some of the main considerations:

Living Soil

Pros

  • Buds grown in living soil produce the strongest and most complex smells when compared to buds grown in other styles (like hydro)
  • Usually no need for extra nutrients
  • Similar to how cannabis grows in the wild

Cons

  • Soil can be smelly, which might be offensive indoors
  • Plants tend to grow a little slower than plants grown with liquid nutrients
  • Making your own living soil can be a major hassle (though you can buy it)

Standard Organic Soil with Organic Nutrients

Pros

  • Plants tend to grow a little faster in the vegetative stage because of the easily absorbable nature of liquid nutrients (nutrients don’t need to be broken down in the soil by microorganisms)
  • Standard soil usually has a neutral smell

Cons

  • Buds smell great, but the odor/taste may not be quite as strong as what could be achieved with living soil
  • Need to provide nutrients regularly in the water

As you can see, there is no “best” way to grow when it comes to soil. Each type has its own pros and cons!

You can produce an abundance of potent and beautiful buds no matter which type of soil you use!

These cannabis plants were grown from seed to harvest in soil - the buds smell amazing!

Will chemical nutrients kill all the beneficial life in the soil?

Yes and no. Although chemical nutrients won’t kill all the organisms in the soil directly, they can outcompete them. As the plant gets nutrients directly from the water, the roots stop producing the various substances that normally feed bacteria and fungi in the soil. The soil food web can start to slowly collapse, as first the bacteria and fungi die off from lack of exudates from the roots, and then the protozoa and nematodes that feed on the fungi/bacteria die off, too. In fact, the over-application of readily available organic nutrients can cause the same problem!

So a single watering with chemical or other liquid nutrients won’t kill your living soil, but regular use can decimate their numbers!

Nematodes may not look like predators, but they actually prey on bacteria and fungi in the soil. If the bacteria and fungi die off, so will the nematodes. Each type of organism is an important part of the living soil ecosystem!

I hope this helped you decide whether to grow with regular or living soil! If you have decided to make the leap, here is a tutorial on how to get the best results with living soil!

How to Grow Organic Cannabis with Living Soil

Ready to start growing?

What You Will Need

Get living soil that's been specially formulated for cannabis (by Nature's Living Soil company)

What type of water to use?

When growing cannabis with composted super soil, you want to use a clean source of water. You don’t want to use distilled water, as it can mess with the soil ecosystem, but most sources of water should be okay as long as the pH isn’t very high or low. If the pH of the water is far outside the 6-7 range, it can disrupt your soil cycle. So if you have very hard water, or the pH is off, you either need to use a different source of water or just be on the lookout for nutrient deficiencies. If you run into nutrient deficiencies with super soil (and you know that the plant hasn’t used everything up yet) it often means you need to correct the pH when you water. Learn how to pH water for organic soil.

1.) Add Super Soil to your Smart Pot, fill the rest with Coco Loco on top, then put aside

You will need not only your super soil but also Coco Loco (or other coco or regular organic soil) to help your young plants transition into the “hot” (meaning nutrient-abundant) super soil. For each gallon of space in your Smart Pot, add one pound of your “hot” composted Super Soil mix, then fill the rest of your container with the much more gentle Coco Loco.

Fill the bottom with living soil.

Fill your smart pot halfway with composted living soil. This will be your "base"

Fill the rest of the way with Coco Loco (keep filling past this point, until you only have about a half inch of extra space at the top). Then put your container(s) aside for now.

Fill your pot with super soil halfway, then top off with regular potting soil

Instead of Coco Loco, you can also use organic soil or another growing medium of your choice, as long as it’s not too “hot” (amended with lots of nutrients) for young plants.

The Coco Loco is situated at the top of the container so you do not burn young plants or clones with too high levels of nutrients. However, once their roots reach down to the super soil, the plants will be mature enough to use the rich source of nutrients without worrying about nutrient burn.

Even if young plants do get a little nutrient burn, they will soon grow out of it, so don’t stress as long as your plants are growing fast and healthy.

These cannabis seedlings are growing in super soil under an HPS grow light

2.) Germinate Your Seeds

Of course, make sure your garden is ready first! You’ve chosen a place to grow, you’ve got your pots and soil, and your grow light is set up, right?

Ok! Time to put your seeds (or clones) into their new homes! But where to get seeds?

Although each of these cannabis seeds look different, they're all viable!

Germinate Your Seeds in a Solo Cup for the Fastest Seedling Growth.

Start cannabis seedlings in solo cups for the fastest start!

Make sure to transplant seedlings to bigger containers when their leaves reach the edges of the cup.

This is how one grower did it:

I originally germinated in Rapid Rooters then moved the seedlings into solo cups filled with Coco Loco. After the leaves grew past the edges of the cup, I moved them into the pots with super soil

Transplanting a cannabis seedling from a solo cup to a bigger container

This gives the plant roots more room to spread out, and supplies it with a fresh source of nutrients.

3.) Water your Plants

Now that you have young cannabis plants, your main job is to water your plants as needed and provide plenty of light.

How to water plants in super soil:

  • Give just enough water to wet the medium, but try to stop just before you get runoff.
  • Wait until the top feels dry to the touch before watering again.
  • Unlike some other growing mediums, in super soil your plants will grow best if you avoid getting runoff. The runoff will carry away some of the nutrients in the soil, and since you’re not adding any extra, you want to conserve the nutrients you do have in the soil.

Important Tips

  • Make sure roots stay warm and keep them from sitting directly on the ground (such as on concrete in a basement). This is important for the colony of organisms at the roots to thrive, and cannabis also tends to grow better with warm (but not hot) roots.
  • Maintain the pH for the best results, especially if you notice any nutrient deficiencies or other problems.

4.) Flowering/Budding Stage

When growing cannabis outdoors, plants will naturally start flowering in the fall. When growing cannabis indoors, you will need to switch your grow lights to a new light schedule in order for your plants to start making buds.

For indoor growers, once your plant is half the final desired height, initiate flowering by putting your lights on a 12/12 schedule so they’re getting 12 hours of light, and 12 hours of uninterrupted darkness every day. At that point, they’ll start making buds, and you’re just waiting until harvest time!

When I was first learning about how to grow cannabis, I learned about the importance of pH to prevent nutrient deficiencies. But sometimes your pH is in the recommended range and your marijuana plants leaves are still showing signs of nutrient deficiencies.

What else besides incorrect pH causes nutrient deficiencies in cannabis plants?

Example of a sick cannabis leaf that is pale yellow and has markings from what appears to be a nutrient deficiency, even though the pH at the roots is right!Basically, when it comes to cannabis plants, your plant starts experiencing nutrient deficiencies if the pH is too high or too low at the roots. This is because the chemical structure of nutrients actually changes at different pH levels, and some versions are easier for the plant to absorb than others.

By giving your plants good cannabis nutrients and managing the pH, you’ll be able to prevent most nutrient deficiencies, ensuring your plant grows as fast and healthy as possible.

But what do you do if you’re using good nutrients and the pH is right but you’re still getting nutrient deficiencies?

When it comes down to it, nutrient deficiencies usually start at the roots, whether it’s pH or something else. This looks like a nutrient deficiency, but it’s actually caused by overwatering.

One of the most common reasons to see deficiencies when the pH is correct is the plant is being over or under-watered, which can also be related to the drainage of the grow medium and the container your plant is in. When the plant isn’t getting the right ratio of water and air at the roots, it will tend to start showing deficiencies even if everything else is right. Other issues with roots are also common culprits.

Causes of Most Nutrient Deficiencies

Note: Basically anything that makes your plant droopy is likely to cause nutrient deficiencies, too.

Although pH and watering practices are probably the most important thing to pay attention to, there’s more than just pH as far as your plant roots are concerned. The “alkalinity” of your water is also important. Alkalinity is related to pH, but it is also its own thing. In a way, alkalinity measures how much “stuff” is in the water that causes the pH to go up. And this also affects nutrient absorption.

If you’re still having trouble after going through the steps above, and your pH is in the right range…

  • If you have “hard” water, you should generally aim for a slightly lower pH (aim for around 6.5 pH for soil and 6.0 pH for coco or hydro).
  • If you have “soft” water, you should generally aim for a slightly higher pH (aim closer to 7 pH for soil and 6.5 pH for coco or hydro).

I hope that helps some people dial in the correct pH based on their starting water.
