If you are a US resident who regularly shops for cannabis seeds online, you may have noticed something new lately… cannabis clones appearing on the menu. Breeders have actually been shipping clones through the mail for years, but a surge of established seed vendors recently started selling clones for the first time, and there is a reason.

Clones through the mail?! When I first learned breeders were selling cannabis clones through the mail, I was shocked the little plants could even survive the trip. But I quickly learned clones are surprisingly resilient and don’t mind being shipped as long as you give them the right conditions.
This new surge of marijuana clones being sold online is the result of several forces coming together.
- Cannabis clones survive the mail – Breeders has figured out how to let cannabis clones survive going through the mail. It involves fast shipping and wrapping the base to keep clones hydrated but in stasis, then “rolling up” the clone and wrapping the whole clone again after that. Once you get a clone in the mail, it’s imperative you open the package right away and free your clones.
- Legal changes regarding clones – In the US, there have been recent legal changes at the federal level that potentially could make it harder to sell cannabis seeds through the mail starting in November 2026. Multiple breeders have stated they believe a possible unintended loophole in the new law may loosen restrictions on selling cannabis clones through the mail.
- Preparation for November 2026 – Seeds may be more difficult to ship through the mail in the US starting November 2026 (unless laws are changed), and many seed companies say they are quickly ramping up their cloning mail-order programs in response to potential future restrictions on cannabis seed sales.

- Availability – Lots more clones available, with strain choices increasing daily
- Modern genetics – Get access to clone-only strains (insider “cuts”). These cultivars take years for breeders to capture in seed form.
- Faster start – A seed takes 2-3 weeks to reach clone size, which means clones can shave a few weeks off your grow.
Cons
- Pests – If you don’t order clones from a trusted breeder, it’s possibly your clones might arrive with unwanted pathogens or bugs.
- Immediacy – This is the other side of a faster start. You can store seeds for years, but clones must be grown immediately.
