Does growing cannabis smell? Yes, nearly all cannabis plants smell by the time buds are growing. The cannabis buds we know and love are fragrant flowers. But some cannabis strains stink a lot more than others. If you’re growing weed for yourself and don’t want to blast skunky weed smell everywhere, you might prefer to grow cannabis strains known for a mild or weak smell. You’re not alone, so I put together this list of low-odor cannabis strains that you can grow at home and produce great weed with a mild smell.
Royal Jack Auto produces buds with creative effects and a relatively low, non-skunky smell.
All cannabis plants stink by the time buds are ready to harvest, but some strains are worse than others. If you don’t want your grow to smell like weed, you need to get strains that produce low amounts of Myrcene terpenes (what gives the distinctive “skunky” smell most associated with weed).
Here’s a handy list of “Low Odor” marijuana strains – These cannabis strains are known for producing a relatively low amount of smell, or for having a non-marijuana-like odor like berries or pine.
1.) Frisian Duck
Frisian Duck is the quintessential stealthy, low odor strain. It was bred by Dutch Passion, who has continued to maintain and improve the strain. Frisian Duck gives you purple buds, duckfoot-shaped leaves, and a mild smell of spicy pine
Where to get Frisian Duck seeds:
- Seed Supreme (California, US)
- North Atlantic Seed Co. (Maine, US)
- Seedsman (UK & Europe)
Frisian Duck was specifically designed to be a “stealth strain”. Purple buds with a mild, spicy pine scent.
2.) Blue Mystic
Blue Mystic was originally designed by Nirvana and then Royal Queen Seeds took the mantle with their version. This strain tends to stay short, the buds get big, and the smell stays mild.

Blue Mystic is a famous low-odor marijuana strain that stays short and produces high quality buds.
3.) Blue Sunset Sherbert
Buds that grow on Blue Sunset Sherbert plants by Barney’s Farm tends to have a lighter, sweeter smell than most cannabis buds, and lack the distinctive “skunk” odor.
Where to get Blue Sunset Sherbert cannabis seeds:
- North Atlantic Seed Co. (Maine, USA)
- Seedsman (UK & Europe)
Blue Sherbert Sunset grows with a relatively low cannabis smell, and produces pretty, potent buds up to 28% THC.
4.) G14 Auto
G14 Auto by Fasbuds is an auto-flowering strain that automatically starts making buds 3-4 weeks after germination, and is ready to harvest a little over a month later. On average, G14 plants are ready to harvest just 63 days after sprouting. They tend to stay small and produce a surprising amount of weed that doesn’t smell much until right at the end close to harvest.
Where to get G14 Auto cannabis seeds:
- North Atlantic Seed Co. (Maine, USA)
- Seedsman (UK & Europe)
- Seed Supreme (California, USA)
G14 Auto cannabis plants grow fast and stay small. Low smell, and buds are ready to harvest just 2 months after germination! Great little mini houseplant cannabis strain.
5.) Special mentions
Photoperiod strains
- Northern Lights – The original “low odor” marijuana strain, with many legendary spinoffs.
- Master Kush – The classic marijuana strain known for big yields and “kushy” non-skunky smell.
- Jack Herer – Unique smell doesn’t really smell like most other cannabis strains.
Auto-flowering strains – what is that?
- Royal Creamatic Auto is an auto-flowering strain that is great for stealth growing due to its small size and relatively low smell (the buds still smell delicious). Royal Queen Seeds autoflowering strains are all excellent in my experience.
- Northern Lights Auto – Northern Lights power in autoflowering cannabis form, developed by Nirvana Seeds.
Low odor strains aren’t fool-proof, but they’ll definitely help make things easier. These are just a few examples that I’ve had a great experience with, but there are many others. Learn more about researching strains.

Note: Smells are usually more intense when the environment gets hot and humid
