If you are a US resident who regularly shops for cannabis seeds online, you may have noticed something new lately… cannabis clones appearing on the menu. Breeders have actually been shipping clones through the mail for years, but a surge of established seed vendors recently started selling clones for the first time, and there is a reason.
Americans can buy cannabis clones through the mail.
A cannabis clone is a piece of stem that grew roots. It is now its own plant, and an exact genetic copy of its “mother” plant.
How cannabis clones are shipped through the mail by Homegrown Cannabis Co.
Clones through the mail?! When I first learned breeders were selling cannabis clones through the mail, I was shocked the little plants could even survive the trip. But clones are surprisingly resilient and survive a few days inside a dark shipping box.
Clones from Homegrown came in discreet packaging.
Just plant the clones in a suitable grow setup right away (like the SpiderFarmer grow kit pictured here). The clones might look a little rough at first (yellow, droopy, leaves furled), and that’s normal. It’s tough going through the mail.
Give gentle light for the first few days, and your weed plants start growing green and happy. Learn how to care for your cannabis plants.
This new surge of marijuana clones being sold online is the result of several forces coming together.
- Cannabis clones survive the mail – Breeders figured out how to send cannabis clones through the mail. It involves fast shipping and wrapping the base to keep clones hydrated but in stasis, then “rolling up” the clone and encasing it so it can’t move around during the journey. Once you get a clone in the mail, it’s imperative you open the package right away and free your clones.
- Legal changes regarding clones – In the US, there have been recent legal changes at the federal level that potentially could make it harder to sell cannabis seeds through the mail starting in November 2026. Stock up on seeds now if you haven’t yet. Multiple breeders have stated they believe a possible unintended loophole in the new law may loosen restrictions on selling cannabis clones through the mail.
- Preparation for November 2026 – Seeds may be more difficult to ship through the mail in the US starting November 2026 (unless laws are changed), and many seed companies say they are quickly ramping up their cloning mail-order programs in response to potential future restrictions on cannabis seed sales.
What buying clones through the mail means to you as a grower:
Pros
- Availability – Lots more clones available, with strain choices increasing daily, though tend to come in limited batches
- Modern genetics – Get access to clone-only strains (insider “cuts”). These cultivars can take years for breeders to capture in seed form.
- Skip germination – Germination can be intimidating (it doesn’t have to be), but clones are far past germination so you skip it all together.
- Faster start – A seed takes 2-3 weeks to reach clone size, which means starting with clones can shave a few weeks off your grow.
Cons
- Pests – If you don’t order clones from a trusted breeder, it’s possibly your clones might arrive with unwanted pathogens or bugs.
- Must Start – This is the other side of a faster start. While you can store seeds for years, you must start growing clones immediately.
This clone-heavy US environment is new since laws changed late 2025. If you have any favorite cannabis clone sources that we need to try out, please contact us here.

Just plant the rooted cannabis clones in a good setup and give light, nutrients, and water.
