At GrowWeedEasy.com, we know how difficult it is to find reviews for seed breeders or get an accurate idea of what to expect from each cannabis seed company. And you may not be aware, but in 2024, there have been some massive shake ups in the marijuana seed industry. It is frustrating, especially from the perspective of a home grower, because it sometime feels like the cannabis breeders are all changing their strain selections, seed availability, and how they run their customer support! I know for me, when I grow a strain that I like, I want to be able to order that strain again. And for the readers of GrowWeedEasy.com, I want to be able to document strains and give strain reviews so you can order genetics that interest you and have accurate knowledge of what to expect.

That’s why for 2024 we are in the process of ordering from all the tried-and-tested favorites, as well as new breeders. Our goal is to share updated info about all the different cannabis seed sources and all the information we can dig up about them. Plus, we want to showcase our personal results with pictures, our overall experiences with their strains, and let you know what other growers are saying.

That way home growers like you don’t have to do the research and can focus on the fun part: growing weed!

The first part of this series is going to focus on the marijuana seed breeder known as DNA Genetics, who has recently re-appeared on the grow scene after a years-long hiatus. Let us know who you want us to cover next!

History of DNA Genetics as a Seed Company

I’m not a cannabis seed historian but I have been growing DNA Genetics for over a decade, so in this breeder review I’m sharing what I’ve researched as well as what I’ve observed when growing seeds from this breeder.

Let’s start at the beginning. DNA Genetics first started as a cannabis seed company in Amsterdam in 2004. Back then, Amsterdam was one of the few places in the world with legal cannabis, and a lot of seed sources got their start there.

DNA Genetics started in Amsterdam in the early 2000s.

We didn’t get to try them right at the beginning, but we grew tons of their seeds from 2009-2019. During this time we had amazing results (documented below). In this period, they collaborated with “Reserva Privada”, and their seed quality continued to impress us.

Then around 2019, from our perspective, they disappeared out of nowhere (both DNA Genetics and Reserva Privada). We couldn’t find their seeds anywhere. Recently (2022 from what I understand), they appeared again with some of their old strains as well as several new strains. It seems like they kept busy during their hiatus!  Now, according to their website, they ship only to the US and Canada. I’m not sure whether they still have ties to Amsterdam, but they still service the EU via their European site, https://www.dnagenetics.eu/

History and Current State of Their Genetics

So what is the deal now? What are home growers saying about their current strain selection? Let me share what we know.

Feminized Photoperiod strains

So first, the good news. They still have some old favorites, specifically Tangie, Chocolope, Skywalker Kush, and Swiss Miss. These are some of the strains that made them famous in the first place, so I’m glad to see they continue to carry them.

They still have Chocolope! The powerful effects of a Thai-based Haze, but fast and easy to grow indoors.

We’re super sad to see they no longer carry Sour Diesel (my absolute favorite version of Sour Diesel I’ve grown!), L.A. Confidential (also my favorite version of the strain), Sharksbreath, 24K Gold, Cole Train (this was one of the first plants I ever grew all the way back in 2009, pictured below!), LA Cheese, Kandy Kush, Sour Tangie, Sleestack, or White Alien. These were legendary strains and I’m disappointed to see they’re gone. I’m hoping that they might still be in the process of breeding them back and release them again in the future, especially if they hear that growers are still looking for them. For example, I saw on their Instagram that they may be working on a Sharks Breath 2.0 and 24K Gold, which aren’t available on their website, so I’m hoping other old strains may be coming back too.

This is one of the first cannabis plants I EVER grew. It was a Cole Train by DNA Genetics, all the way back in 2009. Ahh, the memories.

One of the first cannabis plants I EVER grew was Cole Train, back in 2009.

I’m even more sad they don’t have the old school collab version of Sour Diesel anymore! This was from 2015.

Here is my partner Sirius showing off his harvest from that one Sour Diesel plant. The yields were excellent, and the smoke was epic.

They do have some new strains that seem intriguing: White Widow (I haven’t tried their version of White Widow yet but I love trying new versions of this classic strain), Blue Dream, GG4 (Gorilla Glue #4), Double Stuffed Sorbet, and Recon 2.0 (weird name, but seems to be their new version of L.A. Confidential so that makes me want to try it). They have several other new strains as well.

As far as their new feminized strains, we’re going to try growing their Blue Dream and Double Stuffed Sorbet first, and report our results back here. Stay tuned!

Autoflowering strains

I didn’t have too much experience with their old auto-flowering strains before they disappeared, but some of the new autos intrigue me based on what I’ve heard from other growers, especially Chemacal Romance Auto and Purple People Eater Auto (has some of their old OG Kush genetics!). I am going to run a new grow with these two very soon as part of a mass test on new autoflowering genetics from various breeders. It also looks like Macmelon Auto and Return of the Mac Auto have a touch of their old Alien genetics, so if the first test goes well, I’ll probably give those autos a try, too.

I’ll be giving their Purple People Eater Auto a try very soon. Growers claim you get photoperiod cannabis bud quality in auto-flowering form.

Overall, considering our past results with DNA Genetics over the years, and what we’ve been hearing about their new strains from our readers, we are excited to try both their autos and photoperiod strains.

We’ll keep this page updated as we learn more from our readers, and update with more of our own pictures as we grow out their seeds in a few different setups, grow mediums, and grow lights.

If you have anything to add to this, please contact us or submit pics!

Germination and seed guarantee (from their website)

For this section, I’m just going to share their seed guarantee which I found partway down on their home page: “Follow the steps in our germination guide and your weed seeds will be guaranteed to pop. In the unlikely event your marijuana seeds fail to germinate, we will replace like for like quickly and without fuss.”

What our readers have said

We reached out to our newsletter subscribers in September 2024 and asked what they thought about DNA Genetics currently. The response overall was positive, but please, don’t hesitate to contact us with your thoughts, good or bad, or send pictures. We’re still in the information-gathering stage and would love to hear about the results you’ve gotten, especially when it comes to DNA Genetics germination rates, plant growth patterns, bud quality, yields, etc.

Order from the Source if Possible

Note: The official DNA Genetics website is dnagenetics.com.

  • One thing we’ve heard is that some growers had questionable results with buying seeds from seed resellers or off social media. Sometimes growers get seeds that aren’t in the original breeder packs, leaving you wondering if you got the real thing. We’ve found in general (not just with DNA Genetics) that it’s always best to order cannabis seeds directly from the source when possible. So if you’re ordering DNA Genetics, you might want to buy from their website as opposed to a middle man. That ensures you’re always getting the real seeds, and the freshest seeds. I also feel like breeders are more likely to care about home growers and their experience, and try to make things right.

That being said… I definitely do order from seed resellers sometimes, especially if they have great sales or deals (sometimes you want to buy strains from multiple breeders, and getting big discounts or free seeds is too hard to pass up). And if you order from a respectable seed seller with a strong seed germination guarantee and good customer support, you can feel safe ordering seeds from different breeders.

That ends my history and current state of DNA Genetics for now, but this is just the beginning. Please don’t hesitate to contact us or submit pictures of their recent genetics, and we may feature your comments or pictures here! And make sure to check back as we’ll be updating this page over time.
