10 Unique Tools and Marijuana Growing Equipment

1.) Magnifier

These can be used to look at the sparkly trichomes on buds. This is important because the color of trichomes helps indicate when to harvest. Common magnifiers include a USB microscope, clip-on phone lens, or a jeweler’s loupe. Learn more about magnifiers.

Why growers love this: Know the exact time to harvest weed for peak potency.

To the naked eye, trichomes look like glitter on the buds.

Jeweler’s Loupe – Besides your phone’s camera, a jeweler’s loupe is the cheapest way to magnify trichomes. I’ve purchased dozens of loupes and have found they all give about 10x magnification, regardless of what the listing says. Here’s what to expect.

In the $10 range, most jeweler’s loupes are about equally effective

USB Magnifier – See buds up close, great for laptops but not all phones are compatible.

USB microscopes connect to many smart devices (but not all)

Trichomes are much easier to see with a USB microscope.

Clip-on Phone Lens – This is currently my favorite method to look at trichomes. This offered the crispest trichome pictures and videos so far, using my Samsung Galaxy 21 phone. Not all phones are compatible based on camera placement.

2.) Plant Yo-Yos

Plant yo-yos are attached to the top of a grow tent and can be hooked around cannabis buds. Their hook is designed to secure stems without disturbing buds. They are adjustable so you can attach one to a stem and hold it exactly where you want.

Why growers love this: Easy way to support buds that get heavy and start leaning.

Shower hooks can also be used to attach yo-yos to the top of a grow tent.

3.) Plant Twist Tie

LST, or low stress training, is one of the most important techniques you can use as a home grower to improve cannabis yields. The goal of LST is to bend and tie down tall branches, so cannabis plants naturally grow into a wide, table-top canopy.

Why growers love this: An $8 spool can increase yields more than any supplement.

4.) Rope Ratchets

A rope ratchet is attached to the top of the grow tent, kind of like plant yo-yos. However, rope ratchets are industrial and hang down to hold up your grow light. The ratcheting action makes it easy to raise a heavy object like a grow light, as well as adjust the grow light up and down, without needing any strength.

Why growers love this: Make it easy to raise and lower heavy grow lights (or carbon filters).

5.) Liquid / Water Transfer Pump

A liquid transfer pump moves water from one place to another, which is surprisingly useful for watering cannabis plants.

Why growers love this: Makes it easy and fast to water plants directly at the base.

In a bigger grow space, get a pump with a longer hose to reach plants in the back.

6.) Automatic Watering Pot Bases

These contain reservoirs that hold extra water to provide water for up to a week once plants are established. I’ve found that plants also tend to grow faster once their roots reach the reservoir.

Why growers love this: You water less often, and cannabis plants love it.

7.) Runoff Collection Setup

A good cannabis grower removes runoff water instead of letting the pot sit in it. But removing runoff water can be a pain if plants are in saucers. This solution involves a sturdy 1020 plant tray + an oversized syringe. Put each tray on a slight incline so all the water pools to the front for easy runoff collection.

Why growers love this: Suddenly it only takes a few seconds to remove runoff water.

Get extra strong 1020 plant trays with no holes. Extra strong ones last 10x longer.

The 1020 trays are 10″ x 20″. They fit perfectly in 2×2, 2×4, or 4×4 grow tents.

Put something small under the back, like a bottle cap, or a few coins.

The small incline causes runoff water to pool forward after watering, for easy collection.

The runoff collection setup is especially powerful when combined with a giant syringe.

8.) Giant Syringe

A giant syringe can be used to easily and silently suck up the runoff water. It works especially awesome with the runoff collection setup above.

Why growers love this: Silently remove runoff water. (No noise like a wet vacuum)

9.) One-Hand Pressure Sprayer (Mister)

A one-hand pressure sprayer lets growers treat plants with foliar sprays or pest treatments, while ensuring even coverage across the leaves. It can also be used to spray off bugs directly.

Why growers love this: Easy, effective application.

10.) Leaf Temperature Gun

Use a heat/temperature gun to see how leaves are experiencing temperature. Just point the “gun” (which looks like a laser pointer) at a spot and it shows the surface temperature.

Why growers love this: Measure the temperature of the plant leaves, not just the air.
