Is organic cannabis better than non-organic cannabis? Is it more safe or healthy? Today you’ll get the answer.

Today you’ll find out whether organic weed is the best weed.

What is organic weed?

The term “organic” refers to a method of growing that avoids using synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. With organic grow methods, the focus is on using natural processes and inputs to care for plants. In the context of growing cannabis, organic weed is grown using sources of nutrients that were created by living things as opposed to in a lab. No non-organic pesticides are used, and mineral nutrients are avoided.

Instead, organic nutrient sources like compost, manure, and bone meal are used to provide nutrients to plants. Organic growing aims to create a healthy, sustainable, and biodiverse ecosystem that supports plant growth and development without relying on synthetic inputs.

Organic growing

  • No synthetic nutrients
    • Try to use nutrients that were created by living things
    • Only use mineral sources of nutrients when necessary
    • No nutrients created in a lab
  • Organic pesticides only
  • No prohibited substances

Is organic weed safer?

Just like with food, “organic” weed should never have been exposed to certain types of pesticides. So if weed is labeled as organic, you should be able to trust that the weed isn’t covered with harmful chemicals. However, if everything is the same except for just the source of nutrients, organic weed is not fundamentally different from weed that was grown with nutrients from minerals.

  • Weed labeled as “organic” has some benefits (for example “organic” weed should never have been sprayed with dangerous chemicals)
  • However, if the only difference is the source of nutrients, organic weed is not fundamentally safer than weed grown from non-organic sources

If the only difference during cannabis cultivation is organic vs synthetic nutrients, there is no known difference in the safety of buds. However, there are some other differences. Organic-grown cannabis plants tend to grow a little slower than plants given chemical nutrients, as shown here. These plants were grown in identical conditions except the bigger plant was given synthetic nutrients in the soil. You can see the plant that received synthetic nutrients grew much bigger and produced bigger yields.

But on the other hand, when set up right, organic weed is easier to grow. Organically grown weed also may have a stronger and more complex smell than weed growth with synthetic nutrients.

Is organic weed better to smoke?

In my experience, there doesn’t seem to be a noticeable difference. The genetics/strain, the type of grow light, growing environment, and the overall plant health all have a bigger effect on the final quality of buds than whether they were grown with organic or non-organic nutrients. While organic weed may have certain benefits, it’s not necessarily better to smoke just because it’s organic.

If you’re a new grower, you probably don’t need to worry too much about whether the weed you’re growing is fully organic or not. You’ll get the best results by focusing on providing a healthy growing environment with high-quality strains. But I do recommend experimenting with different growing techniques to find what works best for you. If you want to give organic growing a try, check out the following organic cannabis growing tutorial: The easy way to grow organic cannabis at home (“Just add water” soil).

Use “Just Add Water” organic super soil to grow organic weed with almost no effort.

With this type of soil, you give cannabis plants clean plain water and basically just wait for harvest time. I grew these plants using super soil and it was amazingly easy. Check out the grow journal.
