You pick the last nug from your stash and put it into your grinder. Out again? It feels like you’re always running out of weed at the worst time. And the prices at the local weed dispensary are out of control. You know what? It’s time to grow my own cannabis. It’s decided. But what do you need? How do you start growing marijuana indoors so it’s easy and productive? Find out in today’s cannabis growing supplies tutorial!

Quick Overview: How to Grow Weed Indoors

What Supplies Do I Need to Grow Weed Indoors?

These are the basic supplies you need to grow cannabis indoors

  • Light – Without the sun you need a grow light (light is food for plants)
  • Environment – Cannabis plants are smelly and need their beauty sleep, so plants do best in a protected environment like a grow tent (pictured below). You can also modify a grow space like the inside of a closet.
  • Home for Roots – Grow medium like soil, coco, or hydro
  • Nutrients – Nutrients are in soil, and many growers add nutrients to water

Cheap grow tents keep dust/hair off your weed, block light from getting in or out, and help control heat and smells. The perfect home for an indoor cannabis plant!

This amazing picture by marijuana grower Manzfoo shows a Perpetual Harvest in action - one grow tent has vegetative plants, while the other has flowering plants.

Now that you understand the basics, here are a few different examples of great indoor cannabis grow setups.

2’x2′ Grow Tent – Small

Example of a 2’x2′ grow tent

Example of Nebula's Microgrow - this mini grow tent was 2'x2'x3' with 4 autoflowering plants and used a HLG 100 LED grow light

2’x4′ Grow Tent – Medium

Example of a 2’x4′ grow tent (about the size of a standard closet)

Example of a 2'x4'x5' grow tent - it's easy for your plants to get too tall in a setup like this!

Here’s my current grow inside one of these right now. I think this is the perfect size for most home growers because it can yield many ounces up to a pound per harvest depending on the grow light you use.

3’x3′ Grow Tent (Square shape is better in some spaces)

Example of a single hydro plant growing in a 3’x3′ grow tent with a 400W HPS. You could fit more plants if you use pots instead of hydro.

4’x4′ Grow Tent – Large

Example of a 4’x4′ grow tent (easily yield a pound)

Now that you’ve got an overview, let’s look at each of the cannabis grow kits a little closer.

Small Setups

These are the smallest grow setups on this list, but they can still grow a significant amount of weed!

Ultra short edition – 3′ tall

  • HLG 65 LED Grow Light (65W)
  • 1-3 oz per harvest
  • 2’x2’x3′ grow tent

Setup cost: $300 ($420-500 with professional smell filtering)

3 oz harvest (85g is ~3 oz)

Room to grow – SF-1000 LED Grow Light

  • 2-3 oz per harvest
  • 2’x2’x4′ grow tent
  • Setup cost:

This setup uses a slightly bigger grow light and gives you more height in case a plant gets taller than expected

It’s tall enough we were able to squeeze a little hydroponic system in there.

I once grew autoflowering plants that got way too tall because they took longer than expected to start flowering. However, the light is gentle enough that it won’t burn buds even if they’re close, as long as you make sure to give your plants proper nutrients. The SF-1000 makes this a perfect grow light for a beginner because it will forgive you if you make some mistakes.

Medium Setups

These medium cannabis growing setups involve 2’x4′ grow tents. Here’s a picture to give you an idea of the size difference of one of these closet-sized grow tents compared to the mini tent.

Standard – SF-2000 LED grow light

  • 2’x4’x5′ grow tent
  • 5-11 oz per harvest

This is a bigger version of the same Spider Farmer light that is made for a 2’x4′ grow space instead of a 2’x2′. It has all the same pluses as the SF-1000. Stays cool, grows happy healthy plants, and produces great yields for only a little electricity. I’ve found that plants tend to be more resistant to nutrient deficiencies and other grow problems under this particular LED model compared to many other LEDs.

Max power – HLG 350W LED grow light

  • 2’x4’x6′ grow tent
  • 7-13 oz per harvest

Alternative for a cold grow space: If your grow space rarely gets warm, a better alternative to an LED grow light for this size tent is a 400W HPS. It doesn’t just put off more heat, plants under HPS tend to be more cold-resistant than LED plants (which tend to be sensitive to cold).

Check out my grow journal where I grew with two examples of a similar cannabis grow kit in a side-by-side experiment with super soil vs coco. The buds really thicken under an excellent LED grow light!

Over Power – 315W LEC or 400W HPS (dimmable)

  • 2’x4’x6′ grow tent
  • 7-16 oz per harvest
  • These get hot!

Here’s the shopping list for the 315 LEC setup

Here’s the shopping list for the 400W HPS setup

They are almost exactly the same setup with a different light, but I made a separate page for each one so I could give hints and tips for each one on how to get the best results with cannabis.

If you are willing to deal with heat, the 315W LEC or 400W HPS can produce an incredible harvest in a 2’x4′ grow tent. However, any “big bulb” grow lights like these will raise the temperature of the room by several degrees compared to LEDs, which is typically too much heat for the average grower. However, if you’re willing to vent the heat out a window or use an AC (air conditioner), you’ll be rewarded with the biggest harvests possible in this size grow space.

Example of a 315W LEC in action. This grow produced 1 pound of weed in a single harvest!

Large Setups

These two setups will produce the most weed of any setup on this list. Most cannabis home growers will get the best results using LEDs. However, LED plants thrive in warm temperatures and grow poorly in the cold. So if your grow space tends to get cold (for example during winter), you may want to choose the HPS option. HPS grow lights put off more heat per watt than LEDs and HPS plants tend to be less sensitive to cold.

LED Producer – HLG Blackbird LED grow light

  • 4’x4’x7′ grow tent
  • 10-22 oz per harvest
  • Best choice if heat is a concern

Six flowering plants in a 4'x4'x6.5' grow tent under 2 x Electric Sky 300 LED grow lights - 34 days of flowering

HPS Producer – 600W HPS (dimmable)

  • 4’x4’x7′ grow tent
  • 10-21 oz per harvest
  • Best choice if grow space tends to get cold
