It was October of 2008. Somewhere in San Diego, a wannabe cannabis grower named Nebula embarked on a new adventure… growing weed! Nebula carefully planted her first cannabis seed in a cup full of good soil. Two days later, a fragile seedling emerged, looking happy and healthy. She grinned every time she looked at it.

At first, the cannabis seedling looked picture-perfect.

At first, the cannabis seedling looked picture-perfect.

A few weeks passed. Besides a little leaf curling, the cannabis seedling seemed fine and got bigger every day.

Then a surprise event prompted a sudden trip to Los Angeles for a week. Her beloved cannabis seedling had to be left behind. She gave it a week’s worth of water and set the grow light on a timer. Fingers crossed, she hoped for the best.

For the week-long trip, our grower blocked the drainage holes and gave a week’s worth of water at once.

A cannabis seedling with a single leaf curling. It is overwatered with algae on the soil

While she was gone, an unexpected heat wave struck San Diego. The temperature soared close to 100°F (38°F). Away from home, she had no idea her seedling was sweltering in a burning hot room with no AC.

When our grower returns home, she is greeted by this heartbreaking scene. A very sad plant indeed.

When she got home, she was greeted by this heartbreaking scene.

That grower was me, and this poor seedling on the verge of death was my first cannabis plant.

What happened? Heat plus overwatering (I’ve since learned to never leave a cannabis plant sitting in water). This two-punch combo almost killed my poor seedling. I felt like a failure.

Yet little did I know at the time, these moments happen to every grower. If you run into setbacks during your personal cannabis grow journey, you’re not alone. Mistakes are a part of learning. And sometimes, things are plain out of your control.

Luckily, there is a silver lining. Every grow challenge brings you a step closer to your ultimate goal: becoming an experienced grower who always knows what to do.

Yet why not skip the heartbreak if possible? The good news is most common problems are easy to prevent with the right knowledge. That’s why I decided to put a list together of 10 common heartbreaking growing events when it comes to growing cannabis. After you read this article, you’ll be both mentally prepared when things go wrong, and also know exactly what to do next.

Most importantly, don’t be too hard on yourself.

Cannabis growers, make sure to give yourself some love!

Cannabis growers, make sure to give yourself some love!

1.) Sudden plant death

Your cannabis plant is fine one day, and the next day it’s dead. When that happens, it hurts.

Damping Off (Sudden Seedling Death)

The term “damping off” is a lot less common than it used to be, but growers struggle with it to this day. Damping off is the result of a seedling that is watered too much for too long, and it just kind of gives up.

Terrible soil (plus giving too much water) to cannabis seedlings can kill them.

This seedling started "damping off" (dying) due to terrible soil. Giving too much water to cannabis seedlings can kill them!

Stem rot

Stem rot is caused when the base of the plant stays too wet for too long. The bottom of the main stem turns mushy and plants fall over like they were cut down with a miniature ax. It’s strange how the plants seem healthy until the day they drop.

This solo cup plant was doing well until it started being watered from the bottom instead of the top (the solo cup was put in a tray of water every few days). Look how wet the soil is. One day the seedling was on its side. Upon closer inspection, the base was mushy and barely holding together…

Propping the seedling up with crazy straws was too little too late. The damage had been done and the seedling never recovered.

Root Rot

Root rot is easily the most common cause of cannabis death in a hydroponic setup.

You go to sleep with a fast-growing perky plant.

The next morning your plant is drooping. Hmmm, that’s weird.

What’s going on? To your horror, you see the plant’s beautiful white roots have turned brown, mushy, and smelly… By that night, the plant was dead. A victim of root rot.

Example of a marijuana plant with root rot where the brown affects the roots above the waterline, but not below. What's going on? To your horror, you see the plant's beautiful white roots have turned brown, mushy, and smelly... By that night, the plant was dead. A victim of root rot.

Note: Prevent root rot by controlling heat, giving lots of bubbles, and using a root supplement like Hydroguard. Read the full cannabis root rot tutorial.

2.) Technical failure

Bad Pump

In hydroponic growing, your cannabis plant roots need oxygenated water to survive. If a pump goes out or a tube gets disconnected, the roots become starved for oxygen, and plants simply wilt and die.

Plant roots can die from a lack of oxygen if an air pump stops working or gets disconnected.

Broken Exhaust Fan

If your exhaust fan stops working or accidentally gets unplugged, the temperature can skyrocket. Big grow lights put off a lot of heat. Without the hot air constantly being vented out, your plants can experience a torturous heatwave.

Grow Lights Don’t Turn On

Maybe you forgot to plug your grow light back in after checking on your plants (I’ve done that) or your electrical timer stops working. There’s always the possibility that a bulb burns out or an LED panel stops turning on. Plants don’t like being in the dark for long and start turning yellow after a day or two of darkness. Uneven light schedules can also cause plants to grow 3-point leaves, re-veg, or herm.

Plants may herm in response to abnormally long dark periods and uneven light schedules. This can result in seedy buds at harvest.

Lose Electricity

Weather can be crazy and unexpected. Sometimes you’ll experience an electrical outage, which means all your equipment stays turned off. We made a page with some ideas on what to do during a power outage in different situations, but sometimes there’s nothing you can do.

This picture shows just how much cannabis plants hate the cold. If your electricity goes out and plants experience freezing temperatures, they can respond with all kinds of odd symptoms. The top leaves of this plant turned white after the temperature dropped below 20°F (-7°C) overnight.

3.) Plant gets killed or damaged

Light (or Human) Falls on Plant

Grow lights are heavy and awkward, plus we move them up and down all the time. The perfect recipe for a squished plant. I know I’ve dropped a light before. In that case, both me and the light landed on the plant >.< Pro Tip: use rope ratchets to hang lights and carbon filters so you can easily raise and lower them without having to hold them.

Supercropping accident

Supercropping is a technique to bend stiff stems that otherwise would break if you tried to bend them. Unfortunately, sometimes things go wrong and a stem gets unintentionally split. Usually, you can tape the wounded ends together like a “cast” and the plant will recover, but a severe split can leave a plant hanging on strings with nothing to do but amputate the whole branch.

Oops… Luckily I was able to put the wounded parts back together and tape the stem in place so the plant could heal.

Oops! Luckily I was able to put the wounded parts back together and tape the stem in place so the plant could heal.

Other training accident

When it comes to plant training, there’s a lot of bending and manipulation. Sometimes you’ll accidentally split a stem or break off a branch even though you were trying to be gentle.

Oh no, that wasn’t supposed to happen!

Cat or Dog Ate Your Plants

Some cats and dogs love to eat cannabis leaves. They find the leaves irresistible and will break into your grow room to sneak a bite. I’ve also seen pictures of deer and bunnies munching on leaves. It often seems cute until a plant gets hurt. But please don’t be too harsh on pets. I get where they’re coming from. They just love weed, too 🙂

4.) Buds Come Out Wrong

No Smell or Bad Smell

This may be one of the most common issues growers have with buds after harvest. No smell or bad smell is usually caused by genetics/strain (smell is heavily dependent on strain) or problems with drying and curing. Often the smell strengthens and improves from curing buds in jars for a few weeks.

When buds lose their smell after harvest, it’s often the result of drying in poor conditions (hot, dry, humid, or poor air circulation). Trimming buds before drying in low humidity can also reduce the overall smell.

Curing buds in jars (or any airtight container) usually boosts smells over time.

Harsh to Smoke

When buds are harsh to smoke, it can be so frustrating. Luckily you can still turn buds into hash, edibles, oils, or tinctures. Sometimes using a vaporizer as opposed to smoking can help reduce harshness.

But what causes harshness while smoking?

  • buds formed in a hot environment during the late flowering stage
  • buds got damaged from the lights being too close (light burn)
  • nutrients deficiencies that discolored buds or made them brown
  • drying problems – air-drying in heat, high/low humidity, poor air circulation
  • bud rot, mold, or mildew
  • bacteria growth – for example, if buds are cured in jars while wet; buds may smell musty or like ammonia
  • poor storage conditions – for example, baggies of buds stuffed in the glove box of your car don’t fare well
  • smoking leaves or not trimming buds before smoking (leaves are harsh to smoke)
  • sometimes harshness is associated with the strain/genetics – for example, “Strawberry Cough” was named for its lung-expanding effects
  • plants were sprayed with something after buds started forming – such as insecticides or foliar sprays
  • bug infestation – bug poop and dead bugs can make buds harsh to smoke
  • synthetic PGRs (Plant Growth Regulators) – these are sometimes used while growing to improve plant growth or yields; luckily many PGR-based supplements have been discontinued so this issue is much less common than it used to be
  • buds are not fully dry – can cause sparks and harshness
  • the smoking method has an effect – joints, spliffs, and pipes without a water chamber are more likely to cause coughing; other causes include taking big hits (smoking too much bud at once) and letting smoke sit in a bong for too long before smoking

Heat or light damage during the flowering stage can make cannabis buds harsher to smoke.

Not Potent

After months of growing, you’re so excited to try your home-grown buds. But they aren’t potent. What happened? Usually, this is the result of harvesting too early or starting with poor genetics. Where to get good cannabis genetics.

Why aren’t my buds potent?

If started with good genetics, the next most common reason for low potency is harvesting buds too early (before white hairs darken and curl in).

As long as you started with good genetics, harvesting buds too early (before white hairs darken and curl in) is the #1 cause of low potency. Cannabis buds that have been grown in composted, amended "super soil" by Kind Soil.

5.) Buds Don’t Form

Male plant

Cannabis plants can be male or female, but only female plants make buds. Unless starting with feminized seeds, there’s a 50% chance the plant will be male and grow non-potent pollen sacs. Unfortunately, you can’t easily tell whether a plant is male until it starts flowering.

If your plant is male, it will grow pollen sacs instead of buds.

If your plant is male, it will grow pollen sacs instead of buds. Here's an example of a fully formed male marijuana plant with pollen sacs instead of buds.

Re-Vegging

Re-vegging or “re-vegetating” is when a flowering cannabis plant reverts back to the vegetative stage. This is almost always caused by the plant getting light during its 12-hour daily dark period. It can also happen if the plant is getting unusual light cycles, for example if a timer is broken and going off at random times.

All the buds on this cannabis plant died after it re-vegged.

Autoflowering plant doesn’t flower

Auto-flowering strains are normally ready to harvest quickly. Plant the seed, and 3-4 weeks later it automatically starts budding. In just 2-3 months from germination, most autoflowering strains are ready to harvest. However, occasionally a plant doesn’t start flowering automatically, either from a breeding error or a mutation. When that happens you have to treat the plant like a photoperiod strain and give it 12-hour dark periods daily to get buds to form. If only one plant of many doesn’t flower, this can be a huge annoyance!

This picture shows how occasionally you’ll have an auto-flowering plant that doesn’t automatically make buds. The front-middle-left plant hadn’t even started growing white hairs yet while the others were only a few weeks from harvest. I ended up tossing it so I could focus on the 7 other autoflowering cannabis plants.

I ended up tossing it so I could focus on the 7 other autoflowering cannabis plants.

Luckily, as long as you order seeds from a trustworthy autoflowering breeder, this is rare.

6.) Can’t control heat

Heat Wave

If only you could control the weather outside. However you do have some options.

7.) Underwatered plants

Underwatering happens. Life can take you away from your plants.

Forget to water

Sometimes you get busy and plain forget to water your cannabis plants. It happens.

Emergency takes you away from home

Sometimes an unexpected event separates you from your plants. If you have time to prepare, a Blumat watering system can be used to automatically water plants while you’re gone.

Guest arrives unexpectedly

If a family member or other guest appears and expects to spend the night, you may not be able to water your plants without them wondering what you’re up to.

8.) Bugs

Here are some of the most common cannabis bugs.

Fungus gnats (no biggie)

Fungus gnats looks like tiny flies buzzing around the soil, and are typically triggered by wet soil conditions

Thrips (medium difficulty)

Thrip damage on cannabis leaves.

Spider mites (hard)

9.) Mold

White powdery mildew

White powdery mold forms in heat, humidity, and areas of low air circulation, like most other types of mold.

Bud rot

Bud rot is the result of thick cannabis buds combined with high humidity and poor air circulation.

One of the first signs of bud rot is often yellow leaves where the mold is taking hold. Bud rot is the result of thick cannabis buds combined with high humidity and poor air circulation.

The bud rot is usually located at the base of the discolored leaves.

Mold during drying or curing

If it’s hot, humid, or stagnant air, mold can form during the drying process. Most common when buds are touching each other (for example hanging a whole plant, or drying many buds close together).

This picture shows how these cannabis buds were too fat and close to each other during drying. The right plant grew mold on some buds that were touching each other. With buds this big, it’s a good idea to cut off the branches and hang them separately with at least a few inches of air space between them to prevent wet spots.

Mold during curing

Wet cannabis buds in jars can also mold. The outsides of buds shouldn’t ever feel wet if they’re in jars as that greatly increases the chance of mold.

10.) Other frustrating cannabis grow problems

Plants turn brown, yellow, or look burnt

A common issue is plants burning or turning brown/yellow. This can be extra frustrating when you don’t know what’s causing it. Diagnose your sick plant.

For example, when I first started growing I didn’t know about light stress. I thought these cannabis plants had a nutrient deficiency but eventually realized the cause was the LED grow light being kept too close.

LED grow lights were kept too close to the plant in the flowering stage, causing the whole plant to turn red and leaves to burn. When I first started growing I didn't know about light stress. I thought these plants had a nutrient deficiency but eventually realized the cause was the LED grow light being kept too close.

Hermie or seeds

Cannabis hermies are plants that grow both male and female flowers, potentially causing seedy buds. Often herms are caused by stress, but occasionally it happens under ideal conditions due to the genetics of the plant. This is most common when growing feminized seeds from an untrustworthy breeder, or when growing with seeds you find in your bud (which are often the result of a parent that hermed).

Herming is often the result of light stress, heat stress, uneven light schedules, or light leaks during the dark period.

An example of a male hermie banana growing on a (mostly) female marijuana plant in the flowering stage. Cannabis herming is often the result of light stress, heat stress, uneven light schedules, or light leaks during the dark period.

Occasionally a cannabis plant herms due to bad genetics (even if you provide ideal conditions).

Plant Gets Too Tall

Sometimes cannabis plants grow too big or get out of control and grow right into your grow light.

The most common cause of overgrown cannabis plants is switching to the flowering stage too late.

Example of a crazy grow room full of cannabis colas. The most common cause of overgrown cannabis plants is switching to the flowering stage too late.

These cannabis plants grew way too close to the grow light and there wasn’t room to raise the grow light. Even though the temperature was okay, the buds and leaves were burned from light stress.

A closeup of some of those cannabis buds damaged by light burn from LED grow lights. These cannabis plants grew way too close to the grow light and there wasn't room to raise the grow light. Even though the temperature was okay, the buds and leaves were burned from light stress.

This cannabis bud was burned by LED grow lights being too close. The "new" growth is just a trick, because usually when you see a bud getting burned like this the plant is ready to harvest.

Now that you have seen some of the most common cannabis grow problems and acquired the solutions, you should be able to prevent these problems from happening in your grow room.

But if something happens to your plants or buds, don’t be too hard on yourself. You’re not alone. We all make mistakes and ultimately life is a giant learning experience.

But remember the most important factors to stealth growing: “No tell, no smell, no sell.” Never tell anyone, not even your best friend, that you’re growing. Be on top of preventing smells, and never ever sell cannabis. Breaking one of those 3 principles is how 99% of growers get found out!

“What if my plants get sick?”

If you run into problems, our "diagnose your plant" tool with pictures will help you figure out what's wrong! The most common issue a grower runs into is a pH imbalance. Barring that, your marijuana plants likely either have a nutrient deficiency, heat or light stress, or are being attacked by some sort of marijuana mold, pest or bug. Whether you call it weed, cannabis, sinsemilla, skunk, pot, marijuana, or something else, the plant known as Cannabis Sativa is a hardy weed in the wild and can actually be easy to grow indoors at home when you know what to do.

Growing Medical Marijuana

“Medical marijuana” has become a household name. The body of evidence for medical marijuana in the treatment of cancer and other illnesses is growing every day. And for those who need medical marijuana, growing weed indoors is the perfect way to ensure a safe, regular supply of buds, for cheap.

In fact, when you grow weed indoors for personal use, you often end up with way too much. The Grow Weed Easy website will teach you how to grow your own beautiful huge cannabis colas like this one! If you catch the growing bug like I did, and if you start enjoying the process of tending your cannabis garden just for the sake of gardening, you’re going to have to find a way to press, cook, freeze, and concentrate all your extra buds. 🙂

As you probably know, both medical marijuana and recreational cannabis have been decriminalized or legalized in many places around the world and weed is becoming legal in more places every day! Yet there still aren’t many simple indoor “how to grow weed” guides for beginners (even for those who legally grow, such as medical marijuana users and those who live in places where marijuana is legalized for personal use).

If so, I know how you feel. It can be hard to weed out all the bad information on the internet and find well-researched, free tips or instructions on how to grow your own cannabis. That’s why Grow Weed Easy.com aims to be a simple online resource that explains from start to finish what you need to do when growing cannabis so you can learn how to grow cannabis with great yields and potent buds, even if you only have a small grow space like a closet or even a computer case.

Jonathan Covert GrowOps: "Strains shown .. in purple is Donatello's flower ( heavy PCK ) .. other is purple Widow. Pre98 Bubba kush grown under HPS/LED combo."

Stoner McGee: "You have mentioned the use of Method Seven glasses before and I thought I would show the differences when used in a LED grow. The greatest drawback is they are expensive ,but when viewed as a long-term investment they are quite reasonable. The damage done to vision by LED lighting is a hotly debated topic but why take the chance? Even if there is no damage done, the clarity of vision with these glasses makes them well worthwhile.

The second picture was taken using the glasses and shows some Ghost Train taken during the third week of flowering. I have no idea about this strain. I was given the plant by a friend who had too many plants growing for his room. He either had to kill a couple of plants or give them away. They were already 3 ½ feet tall when I got them. My grow space is small and I had to do some heavy-duty supercropping and I also wrapped the plants both vertically and horizontally with chicken wire to slow down growth."

Leankey

Clan Cannabis: "Here are some of the ladies in the veg tent.  I just found out about your defol method today, so forgive the number of tops. :)"

c21h30o2i: "I want to thank you guys again for the wealth, of knowledge you provide. These wouldn't be possible without your guidance and amazing advice. These are from Sweet Seeds Red Poison and Nirvana's Bubbelicious. Average dry yield 3oz. per plant. 6 plants under a 600 watt HPS in an Apollo tent. Happy Holidaze!!!"

Jude: "I don't remember the strain, but this was grown outdoor, organically and photos were taken a few weeks before harvest. The only things I gave this plant (or the others I grow) were virgin soil and molasses at flowering. Produced great clean, chemical-free bud. Watch what you give your plants, if it isn't fit for food crops, you definitely shouldn't be smoking it!"

johnboi: "Pictures of original amnesia about 2 weeks from harvest. All grown in canna coco, using canna nutrients. 1.2×1.2 tent with 600hps. 1st time grower & I've enjoyed every min of the time it took to grow. This site has helped me so much. From planting my seeds right through to harvest. Any problems I've had you seem to always point me in the right direction in solving it."

Did You Know? – 7 More Fun Facts For Cannabis Growers

Weird or What?

1.) Tri-Leaf Seedlings

Nearly all cannabis seedlings, no matter how the seeds are sprouted, will start with just two leaves per set, like the following:

Normal cannabis seedling (2 leaves per set)

Tiny marijuana seedling just sprouted from rockwool in a hydroponic setup

Every once in a while, growers will run into a “trileaf” seedling. This is a relatively common mutation, and you’re likely to run into it if you germinate a lot of cannabis seeds. 3-leaf cannabis seedlings should generally be treated like any other seedling.

They will grow about 1/3 more side branches than regular seedlings, so a 3-leaf seedling might be a good candidate for cannabis plant training or a ScrOG setup.

2.) Two-Toned Leaves

Two-toned leaves usually have split coloring in a relatively straight line. This mutation often affects just one or two leaves on the whole plant, though sometimes you’ll get a whole stem or part of the plant that displays this characteristic.

The two-toned leaves don’t seem to have much effect on anything, but it’s kinda cool looking!

I believe this happens due to a type of “variegation” (wikipedia link) and may be due to “sectorial chimera”. Other plants besides cannabis plants can have this happen, too!

Two-tone cannabis leaf - natural mutation

Not to be confused with a nutrient deficiency, this mutation usually affects just one or two leaves on the plant. Nothing to worry about! Sometimes half of the leaf will turn purple…

Two tone cannabis leaf - purple/green split down the middle

A second view of that purple-green cannabis split - 2-toned leaf randomly appeared on outdoor cannabis plant, no other leaves were affected

More commonly, half of the leaf will turn light yellow or even white.

Yellow/green split down the middle of this two-color cannabis leaf

A second view of the cannabis plant with the yellow-green leaf split

Both sides of the nodes created leaves that had a yellow/green split straight down the middle - this is a relatively common mutation and there's no need to worry if it affects just one or two cannabis plant leaves

Example of a two-tone marijuana leaf - a common mutation

Here’s an example of a cola that is split down the middle between purple and green

This cannabis cola is two-tone - it's split down the middle between purple and green

3.) Buds Growing From Center of Leaf

Here’s a normal cannabis leaf. Unfortunately, as beautiful as these leaves are, they normally contain no THC.

Normal Cannabis Leaf
(no buds growing from the base)

Normal healthy cannabis leaf - no buds to be found

Cannabis leaves that are growing buds
(these cannabis plants have THC-encrusted buds growing from center of leaves)

Bud growing on center of cannabis leaf - mutationThis cannabis plant was covered in buds, but then the buds started growing right ouf the leaves, too

This is a mutation I’d love to see on my plants one day 🙂 Though strangely placed, these buds are like any other buds found on the plant. You just get a couple extra buds encrusted with THC & trichomes!

The following leaf-bud has grown a single calyx with a few pistils

Marijuana leaf with trichome-encrusted bud growing directly in the center where the leaf meets the stem

Here’s another amazing plant – imagine what you could do with all the trim!

Cannabis flower growing from a leaf in an unusual place - this one is absolutely covered in glittery trichomes

The following nug is almost 1/2 gram – Talk about a bonus!

Trichome-covered bud growing from a cannabis leave - bonus!

4.) Uncommon mutation – Plant naturally topped itself

What’s interesting about this case is that the plant naturally did something that the grower would normally have to do themselves. Cannabis plants normally grow in a triangle tree shape, and growers often must cut or train the plant in order to grow more low and bushy.

Growers sometimes accomplish a low and bushy growth pattern with a plant training technique known as “topping.” Learn more about topping

Here are two normal young cannabis plants, each with a regular growth tip (set of leaves) at the top:

Normal cannabis plants

A regular healthy young cannabis plant with a growth tip on top

A green, healthy cannabis plant with normal growth patterns

So to get rid of this top growth node, a grower would normally cut it off, like this

A regular healthy young cannabis plant with a growth tip on top

Now the following plant had a strange mutation…

This plant randomly grew a leaf instead of a growth node, so it naturally topped itself, take a look!

Mutated plant topped itself when it grew a leaf instead of a new growth node on top

5.) Some Buds Make “Fox Tails”

Bud with little foxtailing – common with Indica-based strains
(buds are rounded out, sometimes one foxtail visible near the top)

This Critical Hog bud grew in a classic cannabis shape, often associated with Indica strains

Massive foxtailing can be a genetic trait, and certain strains will tend to produce foxtails all over their buds no matter what. This seems to happen most commonly with Haze and Sativa-based strains.

This way that buds can grow is named after “foxtails” because the buds tend to grow in a rounded shape with the fluffy hair-like pistils coming from the end.

Example of healthy foxtailing based on genetics
(notice how there are foxtails all over the bud, instead of just at the top)

Marijuana buds making healthy foxtails based on genetics

Huge thick cannabis flowers - natural foxtails due to the genetics

However, massive foxtailing is often the result of heat or stress. You know that’s likely the case when the foxtailing seems to be happening mostly in the parts of the plant that are close to a heat or light source.

When a single foxtail keeps growing longer and longer, it is almost always a sign of some sort of major stress to the buds, most often heat.

This massively long foxtail was caused by heat
(it’s basically a very long and thin bud, and will likely never fill out)

This massively long foxtail was caused by too much heat

Here’s another foxtail that was triggered by too much heat

Cannabis foxtail caused by too much heat in the grow tent

The following bud erupted with foxtails after a heatwave
(the plant also suffered from nutrient stress, which can trigger foxtailing on its own)

This cola shows several new unhealthy foxtails which were triggered to start growing because of too high temps

6.) This Is What Cannabis Roots Look Like

This incredible roots picture was taken by grower Ramon. The plant was first grown in hydro (with the roots grown directly in water), then transferred to soil.

Cannabis roots exposed - healthy white roots on a marijuana plant see the light of day for the first (and hopefully only) time

7.) Cannabis Seeds Can Carry “Twins”

Twin tap roots can sometimes emerge from one cannabis seed. This is sort of like your seed having twins, because each new root has the potential to form into a separate plant!

When this seedling sprouted, it had two taproots coming from the same seed

This cannabis seed germinated with two tap roots - "twins"

When the leaves appeared, there were two distinct seedlings – you can see another tiny set of leaves behind the main sprout

Twin seedlings - two sets of cannabis cotyledons (first round leaves) coming out of one seed

In this case, I decided to kill the smaller sprout, but you can also gently and carefully separate the two seedlings and transplant one into a new home.

Example of "twin" cannabis plants (two seedlings from just one marijuana seed)

If you grow two seedlings together in one container, one plant will usually end up being a lot smaller than the other one. But if you give each plant their own home, they can both thrive!

See more examples of cannabis seedling twins, and see how one grower separated twins into two plants!

8.) Leaves with Strange Number of “Fingers”

It’s normal for cannabis leaves to have a different number of fingers.

First, let’s go over what’s normal

For an adult cannabis plant, the most common number of fingers is 7. Here are a few examples of 7-fingered leaves.

7 Finger Leaves
(7 points is common for adult plants)

An example of a 7-finger cannabis leaf (most common type of leaf for adult cannabis plants)

Cannabis leaf with 7 fingers or points - most common type of leaf on adult plants

Cannabis leaves start smaller though, with fewer fingers. Here’s what leaves generally look like from seedling to adult.

Seedling

Next, the single-finger leaves expand, and the next set is usually 3-finger leaves

Seedling on one side showing single-finger leaves, and left side shows the next set with 3 fingers per leaf

Next, the cannabis plant will start making 5-finger leaves

Young cannabis plant with 5-finger leaves

Finally, most cannabis plants stop at 7-finger leaves

Cannabis plant showing 7-finger leaves, and even a few 9-finger leaves

If you look closely at the above plant, you can see that some of the newer leaves on this plant actually have 9 fingers. Here’s an example of a leaf that has grown 9 fingers:

9 Fingers

Cannabis leaf with 9 "fingers" or points

It’s completely normal for cannabis plants to have 9, 11, or even 13 points on their fingers. This is just a natural way that some leaves grow. It’s also common to get single-blade leaves growing directly off your colas.

Sugar Leaves Are Normal on Colas
(these single-finger leaves are often called “sugar leaves” and they are much smaller than regular leaves, with a base tucked mostly inside the bud)

Single blade sugar leaves coming out of the cola

Now That You Know What’s Normal…

These Sugar Leaves Have a Long Base Like Regular Adult Leaves
(uncommon mutation – not like regular sugar leaves)

Look What Happens When You Re-Veg a Plant…

This is a Re-Vegged Plant

This plant has been "revegged" or "monstercropped", which basically means it was flowering then put back into the vegetative stage again.

A re-vegged plant will grow round single, triple, or quintuple pointed leaves at first, before it starts growing regular serrated leaves.

Re-vegetating a plant means you take a flowering/budding plant and put it back in the vegetative stage. It is also sometimes referred to as “Monstercropping” or “Monster Cropping.” This refers to the fact that a revegged plant will tend to grow much bushy than a plant grown from seed.

Some growers like to reveg a plant on purpose after harvest, instead of throwing it away.

Benefits to re-vegging (monster cropping)

  • you don’t have to plant a new seed or clone
  • possibly saved vegetative time
  • no need to dispose of harvested plant
  • re-vegged plants grow back bushier (sometimes to an extreme)

Downsides to re-vegging (monster cropping)

  • it takes a long time for a flowering plant to re-veg
  • initial growth is strange and stretchy, with round leaves
  • plant training may be more difficult
  • yields may be lower than the first time around

Monster cropped plants look weird!

Sometimes re-vegging happens by accident – a grower puts their flowering plants outdoors too early in the year, and the plant reverts back to vegetative growth. Sometimes a grower will start flowering a plant and have to return it to the vegetative stage for some other reason. In all these cases, the plant will display these strange rounded leaves for a while until it gets back into the swing of things.

These cannabis plants were re-vegged by accident

Close to Harvest

Re-vegged close to harvest - single blade leaves

Right After Being Brought Outside Too Early in the Year, Causing Re-Veg

This cannabis was put outside too early in the year, causing it to re-vegetate with strainge twisted growth

Plants Can Also Re-Veg If You Clone a Plant That’s Already Budding

Here are two clones from a flowering plant

This clone was taken from a flowering (budding) cannabis plant, causing it to re-veg

This young clone was cloned from a cannabis plant that was already flowering - the re-vegging process is what causes the strange round leaves

9.) It’s Possible to Bleach Plants With Too-Bright Light

Light Bleaching – most common with high-power LEDs, but can also happen poorly ventilated HPS lights that are kept too close to the tops of the plants. Basically, this is what happens when plants get too much light, kinda like how the hair on top of your head can turn lighter if you spend a lot of time in the sun.

White tip of this "albino" cannabis plant is actually caused by light bleaching

A closeup of the bleached part of a cannabis bud that was given too high levels of light

Buds which have been bleached tend to be low potency or even have no potency (no available THC or other cannabinoids). Therefore you should avoid light-bleaching your plants at all costs!

Text-book example of light bleaching cannabis making the buds white - this bleaching was caused by high-intensity LED grow lights

Sometimes light-bleached cannabis will get mislabeled as “albino cannabis” or “white cannabis” but the truth is that the white color is not healthy, so this is not a desirable trait (even if it looks pretty cool).

10.) Flowering Cannabis Plants Can Make “Sap”

Sap – there’s lots of speculation about what it is. No one knows for sure. Many growers who have run into this agree that the type of sap produced is sweet and doesn’t contain much (if any) THC. It is mostly made of sugar and water and so is not smokable. Seems to be related to the plant over-producing sugars, and sap productions is more common when

  • Plants being in the flowering stage

  • Using sugar supplements like molasses, Botanicare Sweet, Sugar Daddy, etc.

  • Big temperature difference between night and day, especially if it gets cold at night

  • Certain strains or individual plants seem more likely to produce sap

  • Yet sometimes oozing sap seems to happen for no known reason

“Strain: Kosher Kush. Flowered her for 70 days and she was covered in trichs. When we harvested her we noticed about a dozen of these sap like globes. They range in color from clear to amber.”

~ DC514

Cannabis "sap" appearing on buds - unfortunately this sap is mostly sugar water with little to no potency

“The plants had already been flushed properly – I let the soil dry completely and fed the plants 2TBSP/gallon of molasses, let them eat and then flushed them out again and waited 2-3 days before harvest. Both plants started producing excretions all over. I’ve seen this before, sap leaking from the stem of plants, however personally I’ve never seen it on the buds themselves. What I believe happened is the pores of the plants either get clogged and therefore “pop” for lack of a better word. Or, the plant liked the molasses better than it’s natural sugars and forced some of those out. Either way I’m going to try this on another plant and see what happens. Is there a benefit to it? Probably not, but I’m going to get the substance tested. I’ve ingested all of the little sap pockets I’ve found and while it tastes like canna, it doesn’t seem physchoactive. Who knows, it could be loaded with CBD or something else.”

~ SeriousSports

Sap globule appearing all over the buds of this cannabis plant

Stem Sap (more common) – often appears to seep out of injured parts of the stem, but not always! Sometimes sap seems to ooze out of uninjured parts of the stem.

Sap seeping from the stem of a cannabis plant is somewhat more common than seeing sap on the buds

In this last case, there’s nothing that seems to be causing the sap except possibly genetics. Here’s what HNIC_204, the grower, had to say…

This is my first grow, literally. I have a couple females, that are currently in flowering. I am growing in soil with guano and flowering ferts (Flora Nova and Cal Mag). I have not added any sugars such as molasses or sugar daddy. The temperature stays pretty consistent, such as 78 during the day and 80’s when the lights are on. The seeds are mids from VA. The plant is looking as though it is a sativa hybrid. I’ve had two plants leak the sap, which tasted like honey, but didn’t have an aftertaste. I attempted to express more of the substance to come out and it would not. Maybe the sap is something to attract males, caused by pheromones. I don’t know, but if this happened on my first grow, I think it’s an awesome phenomenon. I have asked my local grow shop, but they didn’t have a clue.

Check It Out!

Fact: Certain Strains Are Easier to Grow Than Others

Recommended strains for beginners

Aurora Indica

  • BlackJack – get the effects of a Sativa or Haze with a plant that is actually suited to indoor growth, short and easy to train. BlackJack produces a potent soaring effect that hits hard, fast and is long-lasting – unbelievable number of trichomes on the buds and leaves. Suitable for medicinal purposes.

Black Jack

Beginners – Avoid these strains!

The following strains are considered “advanced” and while they produce amazing buds, they tend to be difficult to grow and/or finicky

  • Durban Poison –  Tends to grow tall and shows a variety of unusual phenotypes, can be tough to clone. You don’t know what to expect when growing a Durban Poison seed. This strain originates from Africa and buds produce a unique “up” effect. Buds tend to be incredibly potent though not often “pretty” in the conventional sense with longer sugar leaves. Unusually quick to harvest, especially for a Sativa-leaning strain.

  • Jack Herer – Famous medicinal strain that is great for anti-anxiety, you cannot get the original Jack Herer strain as a feminized seed so you will need to buy regular (unfeminized) seeds and manually pick out all the male plants. Yields are on the smaller side but the quality of the buds produced are exceptional.

  • Liberty Haze – Genetics are not completely stable and many growers report different growth types with this strain. Can stretch tall in the initial stages of flowering, though does seem to respond well to supercropping. Unique flowery scent with citrus lime undertones. Unlike what breeder specs state, this strain needs about 10-12 weeks in flowering before she’ll be ready for harvest. When grown right, this strain produces thick dense colas with THC levels above 25%.

Did You Know? – 5 More Fun Facts For Cannabis Growers

Cannabis plants are always moving

This constant movement is something that all plants do and is known as “Circumnutational Movement” (wikipedia link).

In fact , plants monitor their visible environment all the time. Plants see if you come near them; they know when you stand over them. They even know if you’re wearing a blue or a red shirt. They know if you’ve painted your house or if you’ve moved their pots from one side of the living room to the other.

Of course plants don’t “see” in pictures as you or I do. Plants can’t discern between a slightly balding middle-aged man with glasses and a smiling little girl with brown curls.

But they do see light in many ways and colors that we can only imagine. Plants see the same ultraviolet light that gives us sunburns and infrared light that heats us up. Plants can tell when there’s very little light, like from a candle, or when it’s the middle of the day, or when the sun is about to set into the horizon.

Plants know if the light is coming from the left, the right, or from above. They know if another plant has grown over them, blocking their light. And they know how long the lights have been on.

This is an excerpt from What a Plant Knows: A Field Guide to the Senses by Daniel Chamovitz. I highly recommend this book if you want to learn more about plants and exactly how they perceive the world!

No one knows exactly how cannabis plants determine gender

Environmental sex determination is known to occur with cannabis plants. Many researchers have suggested that sex in Cannabis is determined or at least strongly influenced by environmental factors. Ainsworth reviews that treatment with auxin and ethylene have feminizing effects, and that treatment with cytokinins and gibberellins have masculinizing effects. It has been reported that sex can be reversed in Cannabis using chemical treatment.

A cannabis plant can grow taller than a tree in just one summer

Here’s a cannabis plant that produced 11 pounds 3 ounces worth of bud – grown in a 400-pound smart pot and filled with Vermisoil.

Life Finds A Way

“My friend accidentally grew this in her sink. How is this even possible?”

Seedlings have enough energy (“food”) stored in the seed to make their first set of leaves. After that, they need light and nutrients to grow further. Unfortunately, this seedling won’t make it unless transplanted to a more suitable growing environment.

THC-Filled Trichomes Can Grow Just About Anywhere on a Budding Cannabis Plant

Growers are breeding strains that produce more and more trichomes all over the plant.

Trichomes are small, glandular stalked resin glands that carry the majority of cannabinoids and THC produced by the cannabis plant.

A bud covered in trichomes will have an almost “sparkly” or “glittery” appearance. Cannabis breeders are selecting cannabis plants which produce more of these sparkly trichomes not just on buds, but on leaves and stems close to buds This is done with the purpose of getting more potency with the same amount of time, effort and space.

Vegetating Cannabis Plants Have an Amazing Ability to Heal

“This is a white widow a couple of weeks into flower, quite nice, but look to the bottom of the stem and you see a big ‘knuckle’.”

Knuckle has formed at the base of this cannabis plant

“This lady was snapped mid veg by accident. She was completely on her side and connected to the main stem by a few fibers and a sliver of ‘skin’. The ‘connected’ tissue was around 1mm, (around the thickness of a credit card).

“She was roughly taped upright with some very haphazard wrapping with electrical tape and forgotten about. Not only is she looking pretty good, (for a small pot and relatively modest light), she’s not at all delayed or less healthy than her sisters. I guess the message is never give up…”
